What Happened To R&B Group Immature(IMX)? Stunted Growth Music

Today’s feature is a former 90s rnb group that had all the potential in the world in the 90s, but never seemed to get over the hump going from promising artist to full on superstars. At the time kiddy groups were making its biggest wave in hip hop and r&b, as the the child music star became the it thing for record labels to have under their umbrella. They burst on the seen in the early 90s in their first form with Marques “Batman” Houston as their lead singer, and Jerome “Romeo” Jones and Don “Half Pint” Santos playing back up, until he was replaced by LDB. They released “On Our Worst Behavior in 1992 accompanied by who other than Jermaine Dupri, who had a hand in many of the child prodigies over the years in hip hop and r&b. Initially they missed the mark on their first album, and their image entirely wasn’t something the masses gravitated to, but by 94, on their second album, after some fine tuning and reimagining, they found success on their second album “Playtime is Over”, that spawned 2 gold singles “Constantly”, that peaked 16th on the U.S charts, and “Never Lie”, which became their biggest song to date, peaking at 5 on the U.S charts. They gave it a shot, they had some hits and their fair share of misses, but nothing spectacular, and in the end, they lasted 10 years in an industry many that enter can’t say the same. As far as them becoming superstars, here are 3 reasons that never happened.

I'm surprised that the IMX song First Time wasn't a bigger hit, remember it playing alot on BET. I actually think Marqus Houston as an individual should be a video topic. His career is really interesting to me and it always seemed like he could've gotten to that Usher spot, they came up around the same time and made similar career moves (save for Usher never being apart of a group). That and the transition to acting too. This could also lead into a B2K and Omarion videos as well!

Growing up during their time, and with me being a little younger than them (I am more of B2k’s age), Immature seemed like they were a much bigger deal back then. Especially with them doing movies, and MH staring on Sister Sister (which also apparently wasn’t as big as I thought). I thought they were at la B2k level, before they changed to IMX. Looking at it ad an adult, I now see that it was more of some carefully crafted marketing and imaging, more than actual impact and sales. Oh, and knowing what do about Chris Stokes now, I can bet that Half Pint was probably taken out of the group for a different reason! 🤷🏿‍♂️

Immature came around during the time when kiddy groups like Another Bad Creation, Kris Kross and Youngsters were making noises at that time. The record labels were looking for talent for kiddy acts. Marques Houston was a kid star as he played Roger in Sister Sister and the group appeared in House Party 4 and House Party 5. Chris Stokes was managing them at the time when he bought in Half Pint, LDB, and Jerome Jones. Half Pint’s parents remove him from the group to focus on his studies. The group disbanded in 2002 to focus on solo careers before they reunited 12 years later. Marques Houston definitely carried the group and Jerome was more of a rapper.

Another stunted growth would be that, unlike B2K, Immature were mostly produced in house. While Chris Stokes, and later on the group itself (Platinum Status) did a huge bulk of the production (save for Keith Sweat and a couple of others), they could have benefited by having R. Kelly, Jermaine Dupri, or even Dallas Austin work with them.

Play Time Is Over album went platinum (1,800,000 copies) by 1996 according to Billboard magazine. The single Never Lie went 2x platinum. Other than the first album, their 1995, 1997, and 1999 albums all went gold. But I think I speak for everyone who said they thought immature sold WAAAAAAAAYYYYY more records than that............ strange everyone hyped them up like they had a diamond album. They did make a necessary change in 1994 but everyone had that style, their sound was unique but style is everything.

He had no creative control over his first solo album. They watered him down. Like always. You Got Served could have resurrected Immature had they followed up with an album. But again, Chris bankrolled on Omarion.
