short answer, the 2JZ was a cast iron Jabba the Hutt heavy bastard. Even a top end revolution giving it variable lift, and valve timing on both cams wouldn't have kept it going. eventually, you can't update it. the 2jz is still an engine to respect, but the B58 will eclipse the 2JZ in time. not in price or nostalgia, but in performance (durability, tunability, power to weight).

4B11 can never replace or exceed 4G63 in terms of performance and tuneability. Same thing b58 can never replace 2jz. As those fanboys say, and i agree. You don't see 1000+hp b58. Yes, 2jz iron is heavy and emission is bad. But if you up the HP, power to weight ratio still works out. Just because emission law in Europe and US is shit. The other big thing that came from the BMW partnership is that BMW liked the Mirai and the hydrogen fuel cell. Toyota is offering their tech to them and BMW is already testing a hydrogen X5 with 374hp. With the state of the market and hybrids or alternative fuel vehicles taking over, Toyota would rather make moves there than make a 1 off Supra and new straight 6 engine. Toyota is pushing Hydrogen Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Combustion Engines and wanting that to be what the Prius was for Hybrids back then. Doing the MKV on their own would also make the car costs a lot more to make profit. The LFA was an exception to boost the Lexus brand image and a lot of the R&D learned from it went into the F cars and LC500 after it. Toyota had a lot more of their hand in the development of the MKV than haters give credit for.

For all you 2JZ and A80 fanboys, Toyota didn’t even use the 2JZ in their own race cars. They used a 4 cylinder turbo 3SGT from their rally car. And then switched to a V8. @@UP2HTR-E46 from what i've read on paper, yes about that much. although it could differ a bit more wet vs dry. Still, 100kg is roughly 220 lbs. The JGTC Supra is listed at weighing 2535 lbs. a 220lb weight increase would be a noticeable weight difference (a 8.6% increase) in a car that weighs 2535 lbs. The bigger issue was how long the engine was. it sticks out more past the front axle compared to the 3SGT or the V8 it used. It messed with how the far felt, handled, and how weight shifted during corning, braking, and accelerating. It proves the 2JZ is great at drag racing and drift competitions. Not so much at time attack, circuit, or endurance racing. Although many people have used the 2JZ in race applications to get good placements, the consensus is that it is too heavy and most people shy away from it because of that. There's just better options. Especially if your budget is almost as unlimited as Toyota's when they made the JGTC Supra.

@@HAULUUZ Do you want sources? Look up the JGTC Supra. And their engine choice and why they chose the 3SGT and V8 over the 2JZ. While putting the 2jz into a MKV Supra is a terrible idea, starting a new engine line (let's just call it a 3JZ) that they could put into all kinds of different models would have been awesome! The short block could be shared across multiple lines (Lexus, trucks, special performance models, etc) with different heads/strokes to help with costs. TT I6 Hybrid RC-F. IS-F, GS-F, LC-F (RC and IS might have packaging issues with an I6). TT I6 Taco, 4Runner, base model Tundra/Sequoia, Supra. Yeah, that is a pipe dream, but it was doable. If Nissan can keep producing the GTR, then Toyota can surely easily afford to make the Supra on their own. And they wouldn't have had to ruin the proportions of the perfect FT1 is they just used a lightweight version of the LC500 chassis. I do not like the BMW partnership, but it is what it is. They did this solely to save money. Toyota knows how to still make sports/GT cars (LFA, LC500, 86), and could have made this on their own, but the financial numbers made more sense to partner with BMW. I just feel like it was bad move for your flagship sports car nameplate to become a rebadged BMW. I do hope the BMW Supra is a financial success so Toyota gets back to making more sports cars on their own, even if they don't make as much financial sense.

My main question would be. Why didn't they look at the lexus parts bin? They have plenty of powerful v8 and turbo v6 engines.

Think He's right people will learn to love and appreciate the b58 but the only thing it will never start off cheap. The 2jzgte was a bargain to buy because they put it in so many different cars, but not the b58 it will always not be a bargain. But at least it exist.

Perfect world: Toyota would keep the 2JZ block, minor upgrades to the head, plastic plumbing, new ECU to meet EPA regs. minor upgrades to body making it stiffer and lighter. reuse the basic ZF and done. It shouldn't have a high development cost and everyone would be happy. Enthusiasts want old tech in sports cars. Come on Toyota.
@DAddy-iy9mu3 жыл бұрын
The issue is the block itself. Its cast iron. That thing is so heavy it would make no sense unless you built the body like a race car. Also they don't even produce the engine itself anymore. they make parts for some of em but not the entire engine itself. This would make sense if the car was made in the 2000's after the mk4 got discontinued.
@augs83 жыл бұрын
@@DAddy-iy9mu I thought maybe 40 lb difference between blocks. I think its cheaper to make aluminum blocks. Yes trying to save that weight in the front would be difficult but having an upgraded 2JZ engine with interchangeable parts would really blow the market up (maybe). The analyst probably said there was no demand for it :-(
@hong1ru2 жыл бұрын
imo it really wouldn't make sense for toyota to continue relying on a dated design that doesn't really measure up to a more modern engine in any practical metric. New sports cars are always going to have new tech, like the mk4 supra, which had sequential turbos, which were really new and advanced for the time. The two platforms are separated by 25 years, so I'm pretty certain that the BMW engineers of right around 2015 can make a cheaper, more powerful, more lightweight, and more efficient engine than the toyota engineers of 1990 could. Maybe the 2jz-gte can make more power on a stock block, but that really doesn't matter to toyota, bmw, and the vast majority of the customers.
@augs82 жыл бұрын
@@hong1ru I would agree but the BMW B58 doesn't really blow the JZ away spec wise I think. 3liter 335 HP vs 3liter 320hp. Heck the new Toyota 1.6 liter 3cyl G16e-gts in the GR Yaris is impressive. I'm just saying Toy could have evolved the original Supra on its own but it appears the leadership prefers to team with other automakers for their sportscar engines, Subaru and BMW. I guess they know something I don't😂
