Thank you for pointing out Marguerites harmful POV about racism, however, you cannot say you support anti-racism while at the same time promoting the idea that you would still give a racist person like Marguarete money if they had a dance show or something. Instead, why not look into the activism endeavours of the black family and promote those?

The thing that stands out to me about Marguerite is she's obviously scared absolutely shitless. Rather than her religion bringing her comfort and a sense of safety, as a healthy relationship with one's faith should, she is petrified of being in the "wrong" place or associating with the "wrong" thing as though that could destroy her entire life. It doesn't excuse her abusive behaviors, but it's still really sad that she felt she had to live that way.

When the news broke that her daughter had died, all her gay fans who loved her for her camp & "dark-sided" phrase, reached out to her, wrote her nice cards/letters expressing their sympathy for her and sent her flowers. Then she realized gay people were actual humans with real feelings and they were the only people who were kind to her in her darkest moments. There’s a book called five days at Memorial, which details the massive confusion with resources in between the state and the federal government, and the city of New Orleans, and all the people involved in making all of the bad decisions with hurricane Katrina. At the center of this particular story is memorial hospital in New Orleans, which was prepared for hurricanes, but not for the power to go out, and so when the power went out at their hospital, it turned into basically a nightmare. And the people who work at the hospital thought that they were somehow going to be evacuated when the flood waters came but basically the company that owned memorial was like you’re on your own because they thought that the National Guard would be taking care of it. But the national guard wasn’t doing that in fact, nobody was evacuating people. It’s very detailed and very confusing and complex but it all comes down to nobody wanted to do it. There's always someone like her to say stupid shit, and there's nothing you can do but sit there and marvel in horror that someone sees a fantasy reality and that they refuse to admit it to themselves....like why, I can't even anymore.

Unfortunately, people of color, especially Black people, don't often have the luxury to behave any way other than cool-headed and composed when confronted with the endless amount of racist (micro) aggressions they are made to deal with daily. The Malone-Browns were likely very well aware of the climate surrounding race in the early 00s. So while I don't doubt they are more or less the same regardless of the setting, they probably had it in their minds that many white people would be holding them as representatives of their entire race. You can see how quickly things can turn sour when Abasi's emphatic but gentle discussion of something directly affecting him gets twisted by Margueritte into a "barbaric" attack. And how she chose to punish a family she knew was struggling financially by making them wait to get the money that would have helped them tremendously. Margueritte weaponized her discomfort and sent the message with the Aretha Franklin CD that she firmly believes Abasi's station is beneath her. Even though she put it in the child's name, it hurts her too because she will have to continue to live without the privileges of a financial safety net while her caregivers are forced to work multiple jobs each. Robbing her of bonding time with parents who love her while Marguerite, who has no concern over how her behavior impacts other white people, gets to verbally abuse her children and emotionally neglect them. It shows our privilege as white people to be in awe of the composure Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color display because we are afforded many more opportunities to meet outright disrespect with the outrage it deserves without it negatively affecting us and casting a shadow on our entire race. I don't mean this to be an attack on you because I don't know you or what you know/don't know already. I just thought it would be helpful to discuss this subject because it seemed like an excellent opportunity.

It's not inherently racist to say those things. But they are profoundly ignorant to say.

I think in most cases when people say there color blind it’s not them saying they don’t see color as much as it is they are trying to say that we’re all humans and have all the same things in our bodies the only difference it is the color and tone of our skin. The truth is that all though we are treated differently it’s not for one race to say we have less than another because at the end of the day the government is treating everyone the same, so really if we are mad at anyone it should be the government and not each other . One othe thing I think is that we need to stop saying we’re just one race / ethnicity because for those of us who have done dna test we can see we’re made up of multiple different races and ethnicities

There's this lovely poem by Rumi called Moses and the Shepherd. One day, Moses comes across a praying shepherd, who Moses chastises for addressing God too casually in prayer. The shepherd goes into the desert to repent. Then God speaks to Moses, and says "You goober. You silly goose. You've just discouraged that shepherd from praying! You're supposed to bring people to me, not push them away. Moses, I don't give two shits how someone prays to me, only that they pray at all! C'mon man don't be a dick." So Moses follows the shepherd's footprints into the dessert, finds him, and apologizes to him. I'm an atheist, so the way I interpret this poem is that regardless of religion or beliefs, we all need to strive to be kind. If following an organized religion is how you do that, then do that. If you spend Sundays hiking or going to the beach to keep in touch with nature and that helps you be a better person, do that. But the way Marguerite's friends harassed Jeanne for not following their religion or worshiping God the way they do is disgusting. Let people do what they need to do to be a good person.

I want a Bible version where God exclusively calls people "goober" and "silly goose", and then admonishes people to not be a dick. That is a translation I can get behind.

Agreed. Applying this to religion, it is not our duty to nitpick what is right and wrong for everyone else to do while practicing Christianity. Obviously, sticking to the 10 commandment and very central tenants of the bible should be a given as a Christian, but trying to dictate how people practice so closely and with so much criticism is unacceptable. That is for God to decide. Religious leaders and followers are driving people away from church by doing this and through hypocrisy and bigotry.

@@spOOkytimes Yeah but Jesus was supposed to be God 2.0 and he boiled it down to exactly TWO commandments: 37j He said to him,* “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38This is the greatest and the first commandment. 39k The second is like it:* You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40* l The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.” Jesus was very impatient with the crueler minutia of organized religion and law.

Soooo...it's perfectly fine for Marguerite to dictate how other people spend their alloted money at the end of each episode, but she acts like the checks from the other families are germier than used tissues and doesn't want to even remotely consider that they want the best for Marguerite and her family with their funds...? Cool, cool...
