Greetings from America. It is so refreshing to witness the source. Studied Ai Ki Do in New Jersey in the 1980s. Bushido applied everyday in this commercial matrix. At 65 years young you have inspired me to re-discover The Way of Harmony. Aikido in this country has many forms. This humble subscriber was a member of the American Aikido Association founded by the late Fumio Toyoda. Toyoda-Sensei. I met the man, had conversations, and drank Sake with the him. I enjoyed the privilege of his company. I have witnessed magical moments in time observing Shirakawa-Sensei. Thank you Ryuji san for the inspiration. Doug
Beautiful understanding of energy and harmony. Thank you for sharing a great video🙏

a very rare accomplished aikidoka from aikikai. respect!! I'll bet anything that he doesn't only learn mainstream aikido, but also other martial arts as well.. and he also understood the training in deeper level than most. I also love that he still manage and willing to take ukemi when training even when he's already a 6th Dan and considering he's the Dojo-cho and instructor in his dojo..
Wish I could train with you!! Great video. Thank you.

I can tell the sensei can move his COG easily, when he presses, his whole body presses, his arms are just relaxed while playing with your joints. I can also see the tai sabaki is really important, he moves his body around so his arms are always in their range of motions, while doing the opposite to opponents'
This man is truly a master of Aikido. He demonstrates and explains more transparently than anyone I have witnessed. The understanding of what Aikido is and is not is very clear.

Doesn't answer the question posed by the tagline though? Who was the guy who issued the challenge? Can't of been the guy in black, he was being compliant, like any other aikido practitioner.

@@jimgaul7296 That explains it. In competitive fencing, you don't move to the side, so that's why you don't see the obvious flaws in the swordsmanship. As for your praying mantis, I studied Boo Goo Guy Pan Master Ninja Assault Swordsmanship Super Lucky Death Stances. So there.

Interesting concept at 07:00. Because of regular danger on my country and my job (military police officer) I always consider the practical purpose from the basics in my practice, however this is not an actual need for modern japanese society. Therefore Ryuji sensei is correct with the idea that the training can't evolve over there with this kind of method. Although ancient aikido was really practical and tough, it is an excellent point the questioning over purposes for practicing martial arts (modern or koryu) on a peaceful and safe society...

My understanding of Aikido tells me that the cultivation of harmony allows one to continue to train more, with less of a risk of injury than one would be able to through a combative activity. The fluidity of Aikido keeps both uke and nage safe while training. Thus, aikidoka can train more often and later in life than other martial arts.

Does this guy really practice MMA? He is still relative compliant. This video only keeps the unfounded trolling about Aikido fed. I wish some skilled practitioner of Aikido would make a video "MMA vs Aikido" where the MMA adversary was non compliant and sought to dominate/submit the Aikido stylist. Although such a video has claimed to have been made, when watched, you'll see that the Aikidoist does not utilize the strategies of Aikido well ans so the outcome is predictable.

@@Wolfedog There are different ways to handle resistance. One way is to continue forward with the technique breaking through the resistance thereby breaking the arm/back/neck. Yes, uki should always protect himself by moving ahead of the technique to relieve stressed body parts or be severely injured. But if the uki wants to be nagi and takes charge by maneuvering into a counter throw, then this is a different type of resistance. This is non-compliance at a high skill level. But back to MMA. They will not leave the arm extended so do not get stuck in having to grab the arm. Instantaneously change techniques. move on engaging in a different way. The jab comes and is pulled back as a hook from the other side comes....blend and flow with the attack (which might be a jab-jab-hook-uppercut) don't get stuck with a preconceived technique. Blend, flow, engage.
