I figured this was the live action Scooby Doo movie. Liam Neeson as Fred, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Daphne, Owen Wilson as Shaggy, and Lili Taylor as Velma.

The CGI never bothered me. I played video games in the 80s so I was used to that sort of jank. What I remember most was Catherine Zeta Jones' Theo trying way to hard to be edgy and the humanity, compassion, and sympathy of Lili Taylor's Eleanor. Also, the decapitation. Everybody remembers that.

Honestly? I love Theo in this version. Something about "My boyfriend thinks I have commitment issues. My girlfriend doesn't." is so hilarious to me, it makes the entire movie. I don't know. Between the awkward way to shove exposition in there that she's bisexual (which subsequently has nothing at all to do with any part of the plot), the way she projects the lines "casually," and the way the entire scene is set up like "BiSeXuAl????" is just comedy perfection. It only makes sense that it's there if you've seen the first movie, and realized that Theo's character had scenes that were considered scenes meant for _male_ not _female_ characters (something the young target demographic in the 90's probably missed completely because society no longer held these scenes as "men only" kind of character actions, and hadn't by that point since they'd been able to buy their own tickets to see movies) which implied she was bisexual. In the 60s version, there's an implied sexual tension between Theo and Eleanor that neither are comfortable with, but no one will mention. It's designed to be there. So what did they do in the 99 version? "My boyfriend thinks I have commitment issues. My girlfriend doesn't." It's a different kind of good from the 63 version. That movie is actually good. This movie is bad good.

I really liked "The Haunting". I think what I liked about it, was that it avoided what everybody else was doing. At that time horror relied on teenage boys for success. So it was all about nudity, gore, and language. I think you could play the haunting uncut on broadcast TV without raising an eyebrow. And yet despite that, they got a few good scares in, told a really creepy story, and showcased an incredible set. The effects are dated, but it was 1999, and that's for CGI was at a time. You don't discount "The Day the Earth Stood Still" because you can "see the wires". I put "The Haunting" up there with "The Others" for the same reasons.

I didn’t care for it personally, it’s by no means a bad movie or anything it has a lot going for it, I much liked House On Haunted Hill better. As for the CGI I think it’s all about the quality from the company who you use, Jurassic Park from 1993’s CGI holds up quite well even by today’s standards. Jurassic Park had a 63 million dollar budget where as this film had an 80 million dollar budget. Interesting take that Spielberg produced both films.

It's bad. It's boring. The difference with something like The Day The Earth Stood Still and this, is TDTEST is a great and poignant story. It's memorable, a classic for a reason, regardless of the special effects (which were strong for the 50s) The Haunting is nothing but forgettable, without factoring in the rotten visual effects.

Completely agree. The Robert Wise 1963 film is beautifully designed, impressively acted, and far more chilling - and mature - than the 1999 dull, over-produced, silly, unscary remake. Case in point: Claire Bloom's Theodora's open gayness, as opposed to Catherine Zeta-Jones' straightness - no attempt to create character. The Spielberg touch gets it wrong as much as it gets it right. Unwatchably boring, stupid, over-produced multi-million dollar garbage. And much as I love and admire Lili Taylor, here she doesn't match Julie Harris' sad, haunted, victimized Eleanor. Dreadful movie: I remember watching it in a nearly empty theater In NYC.

Atmospheric horror just doesn’t do anything for me personally, or should I say horror that relays solely on atmosphere and character dynamics, like The Changeling, or The Haunting, or The Shining, or Don’t Look Now. The 1963 film was shot in black and white, and used practical effects, which gave it a more moody and chilling atmospere. The 1999 film was shot in color, with a lot of CGI. The 1999 film did have a really good moment, however. It was when the annoying Owen Wilson's character is decapitated. A similar film, which I really liked, was "The Haunting of Hell House".

Recently rewatched the movie. The dialogue felt like no one was actually talking to each other which was done well in the 60s film but the 90s version... not so much. part of it was the 90s film had the lines 'updated' to modern lingo which did not jive well with the story. Also, the psychic abilities of the cast in the original made way more sense than 'insomniacs' But one thing that made this movie special was how vibrant and well crafted the set was. It was a joy to watch people run around the hallways because all the rooms had details to really dig into. If only the rest of it was good. One moment that really stuck out to me was when Dr. Marrow tried to coax Nell ONTO A COLLAPSING STAIRCASE?? What was he thinking??

What I remember on this movie (in the theaters) was that obnoxious loud sound/boom for a cheap jump scare. The house itself was breathtaking, the attention to detail was so immersive you really feel its real. But yeah while the CGI was fine for its time I believed they should have used it sparingly. The best scare in my opinion is the one your mind is forced to imagine and not graphically seen.

The book is worth reading. The original movie is good, but they throw in a few changes. The 99 version is horrific. I was filled with rage when I watched this movie. By the end of it, I think I wiped it from my mind and I literally haven't thought about this since sitting in the theater and looking at the final scene and wanting to yell at the screen. They really f***ed this up. I will say that the book works because you never know if the main character is insane or not. It's told in first person, and although it feels very supernatural, there are no visible manifestations. The first movie captures this very well. There are sounds and there are voices. There are knocks on the walls and the doors. There is wind and there are some apparent temperature fluctuations. All of these could be features of insanity, and so the book keeps you guessing the whole time. And at the end when Eleanor's soul joins with the house, It has a really big emotional impact. In the book, because she is suicidal, her death feels like some kind of dark and joyful experience. Really dark stuff. The 99 version fails to convey any of that.

I heard for years about how bad this film was, and never saw it until about five years ago when it popped up free on streaming. About a third into it I was wondering why it had garnered so much hate...it seemed like a good adaptation. Then the latter two-thirds came along, and by the end I fully got it. I mean, if you want it to look like a child is crawling under a sheet, you get a child and a sheet, not a computer. The 1963 film did so much with suggestion and atmosphere, where this version was like some constantly morphing digital fun house that appeared to want to go as far in the other direction as possible.

For real though, SFX are visual eye candy meaning if a film relies too heavily on them, it will likely lack substance. It was either this or house on haunted hill as a kid. I think both came out same time.

I saw a double feature in the theatre of blair witch and the haunting. After watching blair witch, which i thought was real, the haunting did not hold up...

Such a forgotten movie. People forget that this is the overall main movie they were parodying in Scary Movie 2, much like Scream was the overall main movie parodied in Scary Movie 1. 😂

The only thing that I like and that stands out the most is the HUGE fireplace in the house. Very bad dialogue.

The set design was fucking incredible. Its a shame the movie is nothing more than an effects showcase/tech demo.

the CGI is admittedly awful, but the efficacy of the set design still holds up very well, especially that atrium area. ..its not a great horror movie, but its a good one. people hate on it too much, its a good spooky not scary movie

I have not seen this movie since I was 10 or 11. I enjoyed it at 11 but can't imagine rewatching It today. I really only remember the scene with faces and the scene with Owen Wilson getting dragged into the water. I may be wrong about some of those details. Bad cgi and nothing memorable is not a good sign but people somewhat liked it when it came out. Just aged extremely poorly.

My wife and I really enjoyed this movie. It's one of her favorite horror movies. We have seen it probably 20 times. But then again we don't watch alot of horror. It's just not for us.

I saw the sixties adaptation before watching this...thing. They messed up everything that was great in the old version. Without cgi or lazy jumpscares it really did scare me, this one not so much. It did made me laugh though so it works as parody.

I hate how they put all that effort on the set designing yet decided to CGI PS2 era Casper in this rustic haunted mansion.
