The most underrated band in rock history possibly. Ray Davies is a songwriter that few can be compared to , certainly in the same league as the very best of this generation. The depth of his lyrics and direct reflections of the social classes in post war England are unparalleled . This is likely what prevented the commercial success others enjoyed who wrote much less intelligent music. Furthermore he didn't rely on regurgitating American blues music to ship back the the US whitewashed.

Hard to add anything to Stephanie's post. They were (are still!) in the top 2 or 3 most awesome (in the literal sense) rock groups of our epoch. Or forever, since Rock music is more or less deceased. Given that Raymond Douglas Davies was virtually the sole composer of both music & words, that more or less puts him on par with the Beatles. But no need to compare him with anyone, especially not the God-like Beatles, he was/is a more rarefied thing: a master musical storyteller, eternally transcendent.

You are leaving out the initial reason of their problems Ray Davies would not perform in their concerts because he was a terrible alcoholic I remember I had friends who used to promote concerts and they were scared of promoting the kinks because they would lose their money if he wouldn’t show up or show up drunk I would also like to know what got him banned from the United States which you don’t delve into Ps when I was 10 years old my parents took me to France and I met them at the airport and asked for their autograph which they were very nice to give me I didn’t even know who they were I just heard a big commotion at the airport after they’re too big rock hits you really got me and all day and all of the night most people had no idea what the rest of their records they were too many good groups in the 60s to listen to their eclectic songs I like tired of waiting for you and maybe Sunday afternoon but you cannot compare the rest of the material to The monster songs of the decade and of course the Beatles and the stones

One of the greatest bands ever, with the catalog to prove it. Unfortunately, they shot themselves in the foot almost every chance they got, starting when they were banned from the US and keeping up right through to today with their bickering scuttling any hope of a reunion. The reason the Kinks were barred from the US from 1965 thru 1969 was that one of the Davies brothers had an altercation in Sacramento during their 1965 North American Tour with a US musicians union rep who reported the incident. That ended the tour and put the ban in place.

Loved The Kinks up to Lola vs Powerman then I increasingly lost interest. There was some undefinable quality to Ray's songwriting and the group's sound of that early period that for me seemed to go missing after that time. Even the non-released songs that later appeared on The Great Lost album were ... great. I saw them live in 1971. I recall they ran on stage and launched straight into Till the End of the Day. I find it kind of sad that you continuously lost interest past Lola. Muswell Hillbillies might be my favorite album by them! I absolutely love a handful of songs off of show biz too (with a brilliant live album behind it also). I know people generally don’t like their preservation acts but to me it’s some of their best writing and playing even if it’s a bit overstuffed. Soap opera and schoolboys are also perfect imo. Past that point they become very 50/50 to me and get increasingly iffy, and to each their own ofc, but I absolutely adore a lot of what they did in the 70s. Soap opera might even be my favorite album depending on the day.
