You are correct, The Kinks were too dirt to be The Beatles and not cool enough too be The Rolling Stones and too weird too be The Who, Soooooo Misfit Punk is born.

Not just your HO, but MHO also. I label them proto-punk. Also, IMHO they gave influence to what became acid or psychedelic rock Jefferson Airplane (and others)says. And a definite hard rock/metal influence so says Van Halen (and others) Progenitors of distortion and 3 chord songs. Brian May said they planted the seeds that became riff-based rock. Even Jerry Lee Lewis said they single handedly changed rock-n-roll to rock. I personally think they are/were the biggest influence on everything within the rock genre and pretty much shaped the music from there on.

@@Ckom-Tunes But to get to Hank Williams you gotta start with Jimmie Rodgers, and both were the first 2 of 3 people inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1961, Fred Rose was the other. Without Rodgers, Hank would have sounded like Bob Wills IMO. And you're right, pretty damn good company!

The Kinks were the most British, British Invasion band. They documented British class differences in post-war UK. Eh: Dead End Street, Waterloo Sunset, Sunny Afternoon. Somehow they are under appreciated, maybe because they were barred from the US in crucial touring years in late 60's. God save the Kinks !!

I read an interview once, long ago with Ray, he was explaining how he was working in the day + playing R+B at night in the clubs. One day in 1963 he said he heard Chuck Berry on Radio Luxembourg and that was it. He then knew what he wanted to do!!

@@jonpatterson7211 The Kinks were not allowed to play in the USA for - I think about 4.5 years. 1965 -1969 basically. The reason was never officially/adequately explained. The musicians union said The Kinks were constantly/too often late for their gigs and were also fighting/yelling/screaming at each other during their gigs. One major fight was with drummer Mick Avory throwing his cymbal at Dave Davies during a show - mind you I've read differing accounts so I don't actually know anything. The Kinks were so poorly managed that my guess is that it was a money thing and their management probably stiffed some of the upper level record execs and that brought about some sort of backlash - whatever the real reason - no Kinks in the USA.

The TV show is Shindig. They had all the bands on and live. On transistor radio at this time were the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Four Seasons and Motown. Songs of that era primarily were written with young girls in mind. They bought the vast majority of 45's and LPs. Then these guys come along and the first time I heard them I thought holy shit, they're playing stuff with young guys in mind like me. Then I saw them and they were as unruly as I imagined. The Kinks wrote iconic songs that we could play ourselves and feel good about.

Great analysis Fil. One of their most underrated songs is "I'm Not Like Everybody Else", which was released as the B-side of "Sunny Afternoon" in '66 . There are many live videos of the song, but the best live version (from their '94 UK tour, and included on the '96 "To the Bone" CD) sadly was not filmed. A shortened version of the song was included in an episode of "The Sopranos".

Ohhh. I was 9 years old in '65. Of course the sound isn't perfect, but pretty much the way we heard it on the original broadcast! Mono tv speakers and all. And if those girls could just stop screaming?! I heard that "bad chord", but Dave Davies was so quick to recover and correct the "mistake" that it sounds like it belonged there! RAW and in the moment.

Best live band I have ever seen. You can not only hear the mistake you can see it on Dave's face. Lots of Kinks videos on line where you can hear what a really great guitarist is. He adapted his playing through out the years to accommodate Ray's many different styles of writing.

You’re always gonna do a clam someday. The whole thing that was beginning in those days was that single note leads were just growing up. Dave's approach is so distinctive, and Ray's writing is so distinctive, you could never confuse what you're hearing with another band. They often, even later on songs like The Hard Way, came back to this attack. One other thing. The Kinks are probably my all time favorite band. I saw them live several times over the years. :-)

I started playing the drums in the 60's and then moved to an electric guitar. I finally settled on the bass but I haven't had a bass in my hands in 30yrs. I have total respect for any musician that can play any instrument and sing. My own meager talents were nothing to brag about but my father, who was a WWll vet played the steel guitar in a western swing band and was quite good. My father played in the band in the years preceding the second war. He ordered a new 1937, or 38 double neck Rickenbacker lap steel and amp. The amp was thrown away about 25 yrs ago but I still have his Rickenbacker in its original case with picks and slide. I only wish I had kept my pre CBS sunburst Fender Percission that I bought new. Both he and my older brother could play their perspective instruments and sing very well at the same time. My hat is off to anyone with the God given talent, or dedication to achieve that level. You did an excellent job as always Fil.

@@tjvanpopta I am very sorry to hear that Covid has effected that many people where you live. In Oklahoma where I live most of the people are supporters of our last president who said Covid-19 wasn't serious and wouldn't wear a mask or practice any safety measures. They also are reluctant to get the vaccination. This careless attitude and political garbage will cause many more people to be sick and possibly die. My youngest daughter and her family have all had Covid but fortunately it wasn't serious cases. I lost a cousin and his wife to Covid. My cousin was healthy and died 12 days later in ICU on a ventalater. My oldest daughter has been diagnosed with stage four cancer in the lining around her stomach and other organs. My wife lost a kidney to cancer so both are at a high risk category. We have lost two healthy men in their early 40's in the small town near where I live. We are not in a lock down but my wife and I stay home as much as possible. Right now we are having a strange cold spell and it is -12° F while I am writing this. The power grid is getting overload and I hope it warms up soon. I sincerely hope you and your loved ones are safe and warm during these trying times. Take care of yourself and Stay safe.

This one just popped up in my feed now - 1 year later. And it couldn't have come at a better time as I have over the past three months learned Barre chords, some other simple chord shapes, and just this week the minor pentatonic scale. This song says everything about why I finally decided to start writing songs - in reality you can write a good song using just major and minor chords and putting authentic believable vocals and style behind it. Reminds me of The Ramones who obviously learned from The Kinks. Funny enough my instructor last week reminded me to Barre when using the pentatonic scale to reduce flailing around, just as you mention. Great vid!

The coolest part is Ray Davies head bop, the coolest moves. Also the suits vs. the sound was great because it showed a rebellion of sorts. Loved the kinks. It was heavy for back then, in context they rocked hard. Fil you also sound way more compressed. When we used to cover this I didn't use a pedal, straight up guitar and amp Vox at the time. Dave makes a mistake to prove it's live Ha ha. Fil, how about an analysis of guitarist Kfir Ochaion, covering >Misirlou. Way out there on the edge.

I saw The Beatles and The Moody Blues and other British Invasion groups on You Tube singing live in some concert setting in England. I can’t remember the name of the show. It looked like some arena. It was always good to see the groups play live. As you said, many times they mimed or sang live to a recorded track of the their instruments. This was common practice in the U.S. A number of groups did play live on the Ed Sullivan and some other shows though in the U.S.

I saw the Kinks live in New York, got tickets from my sister's friend. I went reluctantly, not realizing I was about to be in a room with Ray Davies and life would never be the same! We knew every song, screamed and sang our lungs out and my friends, that was rock and roll. Amazing artists with new sets for every song. Attitude and talent, and sooooo much fun!

We too! The Kinks were banned in the US from playing - so in the US, Sunny Afternoon was it UNTIL we got to hear The Kink Kronickles and what we missed (Lola and Apeman had come out of course). Played that album a LOT. GREAT, great album.

Met Ray Davies at Heathrow 2000. I was flummoxed & childlike .. dancing from one foot to the other.. trying to be mindful of my suitcase too .. I was saying to myself “that’s Ray Davies-wow wow wow’ but I was also very shy .. I did not go up to him .. Cursing myself for being shy., I eventually headed for a coffee - who should be standing beside me at the line up.., RAY DAVIES - I had previously noticed that he was with a woman & a child .., I think his partner must have felt sorry for me & ordered Ray to put me out of my misery 😊( Thankyou partner) .. Ray initiated contact with me & I then fumbled in my bag & found my note book/ address book & Ray (god bless him) gave me his autograph- HEAVEN.. I was so so wrapped 😊.. The KINKS 1st LP (You Really Got Me in the USA) was an R&B masterpiece. History has noted that session drummer Bobby Graham (Englands Hal Blaine) played these sessions and he was on fire! His drumming on Just Can't Go To Sleep and Got Love If You Want It is a masters class in recording pop music.

Hello Fil, Hello Wingers. Fil mentions "playing with you thumb over the top." This is difficult. Even if you don't play find a guitar (any 6 string) roll your thumb over the top and try and move your fingers accurately, it is hard. I feel playing guitar bends your fingers and hands (something like braces on teeth) I have only minimal finger spread between pointer finger and middle finger. I am hoping that simply practicing creates finger spread (surgery is out) It sure looks like a lot of fun playing that electric guitar. I am holding out on acoustic as long as I can as I figure if I pick up the electric (an experience how much easier it is to play) I lose interest in the acoustic. I love playing my acoustic guitars but my hands hurt because of it. Oh analysis request. @Dan R. You may already know this. Ray Davies was married to Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders. Apparently, it nearly didn't happen as the couple had a blazing row in the taxi on their way to the ceremony (Islington Registry Office, London ?). Ray and Chrissie have a daughter.

@Dan R. Thanks for your reply. I would have added that to me Chrissie is the epitome of the phrase "rock chick". But I don't think she would thank me for saying it! Just as an aside, I suppose you know that Ray Davies wrote "David Watts" which was covered by U.K. band The Jam. And Robert Palmer (RIP) covered "You Really Got Me" on his album "Double Fun". My personal Kinks favourites are "Waterloo Sunset" (I grew up in London and I have seen the crowds of people teeming over the Thames bridges to get from the City to catch their trains to suburbia. Such vivid pictures portrayed in song), "Days" ( those harmonies), " The Village Green Preservation Society" (so very English), "Lola" ( years ahead of it's time!). Stay safe and well!

@@markmiwurdz202 Hi Mark. Yes I at times do feel squeamish making comments like "best rock chick." I am certain Chrissie has heard that line many times. One thing I notice about the 70 year old Chrissie Hynde, she is trying and wanting to be more feminine. I have seen her say in interviews how she felt her past behaviour was not very feminine. In my eyes feminity is one of a woman's best qualities.

Hi, Dan. I was thinking just the opposite about electric vs acoustic. Having started with electric, I'm becoming interested in getting an acoustic guitar in the future. There are a lot of great songs I want to play that don't translate so well to playing electric. My guitar teacher also tells me to put my thumb over the top for certain chords. I've got small hands and it is very difficult. Barre chords are really tough because I don't have long fingers that I can slide up and down to find the sweet spot.

Gotta love the Links , Brother Fil!! I always say that the greatest songwriters in rock were Lennon/McCartney , Ray Davies, Elvis Costello.... When playing this tune one MUST yell "Oh No" like Ray did!! Was he thinking Brother Dave was gonna throw him down some stairs?! Ha. Dave bought one of the original Flying V like his contemporary piers Albert King + Lonnie Mack. I heard a simulcast many years ago of the Links live + it was great! Ray kept teasing the audience between tunes with a couple bars on Acoustic of Lola. He'd stop + say " I'm not going to do it"!. Fil, the place would go bonkers!!! Mick Avory is 77 today! Great video! I love The Kinks. They quickly abandoned a lot of use of distortion after their early hits. No matter, though because everything up to and including Muswell Hillbillies is incredible. I'd love to see an analysis of Soft Machine, especially Hugh Hopper's massively fuzzy bass.

Thanks for a great Part 2 analysis video of the Kinks' performance--I promise to watch Part 1 later today(started watching your videos after it). You provided superb information that described their "pioneering use of distortion" in your title. I also appreciated your guitar demonstrations. As the guitar is my secondary instrument(piano/keys my 1st), I can both relate to and appreciate the overall difficulty(ies) that Dave Davies faced while performing--yes, VERY difficult indeed! This is a wonderful great review! As always, you never cease to amaze me with your description and showing the actual guitar piece was priceless! And yes, they really did tear the speakers to get some sort of distortion back then. I think that was actually discovered when a bass player was plugged into a guitar amp and cranked up. The speaker tore and when a guitar was plugged in the sound was discovered. Great Job as always, Rock On brother!

Saw Ray solo in the 1990s with one guy backing him up on mainly slide. Ray played BOTH the drag/stop chords and the little arpeggios in Tired of Waiting by himself. After being at many Kinks concerts from 77 on, it took seeing him solo to realize what a fantastic guitarist Ray is. Dave also played some of the best melodic solos in the live shows.

I saw him solo too, on his X-Ray tour, on the book he wrote. It was great he spoke about his family, childhood, growing up after the war and history of the band and their first amp. I think it was used on a lot of their famous first hits.

@@sososo2445 yeah that's right it was the X-Ray tour. The place I saw him in Lawrence KS held like 250 people and he walked out like an ordinary guy and said hi, then did his thing. A great memory.

It was like Dave was going out of his way to prove that he could play the lead live even before all the rumors that Jimmy Page played it on the studio version. Made even more important since Page actually did a clone-like copy of it on another record after this was released. High-end competition with a smile.
