In this video, I explore the city of Gangneung, not only because it has beautiful beaches and stunning mountains but also because it has the story of the North Korean submarine. This submarine has infiltrated South Korea back in 1996, starting a massive 49-days manhunt, an incident that is not easily forgotten, or is it? I constantly interact with locals to get their personal experiences and views on this event. The submarine is still on display, but will it stay?

The first S.Korean special forces who went into the submarine were SEAL. They armed with pistols, not rifles such as M-16, because inside of the submarine is too small as you saw. You could find out the interview of the guy who entered into the submarine as a captain of SEAL team.

내가 중학교때 있었던 사건.. ㄷㄷㄷ 같은 반 친구 삼촌이 최초 제보한 그 택시 드라이버였음. 시내에 살아서 뉴스는 계속 속보를 보냈지만 내 주변 사람들은 크게 체감을 못했었음. 당시 어린 나이에 안인은 시내와 엄~~~청 먼 느낌이라 더 그랬던것 같음. 한 친구는 농촌지역에 살았는데 집에가는 길에 버스에서 군인들의 검문도 지속적으로 받았다고 해 놀라웠고 어떤 날엔 의심스러워 보였는지 친구 형이 실제로 군인에게 잡혔다가 동네 주민이 그 청년 공비 아니라고 증언해줘서 풀려난 적이 있었음. 나나 친구들이 봐도 그 형은 진짜 공비같았기에 배꼽잡고 웃었던 기억이 남 ㅋㅋㅋ

If you go to Goseong, Gangwon-do, there is a pretty sea next to a military condo called Hwajinpo Condo, and you can see Kim Il-sung's villa and Rhee Syng-man's villa. It's a beautiful place with the sea, pine forest, and lake. I recommend it.

이 잠수함 사건 때 소탕 작전 때문에 현역들 고생 많았지요. 대부분 사살,한명 생포, 한명 북으로 도주,, 그 이후로 예비군이 빡세졌음. 공기부양정 등으로 서해(소래 등등 침입 가능성 이유로) 쪽 침투하면 바로 서울이니.. 이 때 부터 최대한 FM. 대로 예비군 훈련 시작 됨. 그 전에는 시간 때우기에 가까웠는데..

보도 통제로 안 알려져서 그렇지 대대장급 지휘관 포함 우리 군인들 많이 죽었슴다. 제 친구도 3성장군 이상급만 타는 블랙호크 처음 타봤다고 하는데 헬기타서 좋은거 보다 죽겠구나 싶었다네요. 울림도 심한 산악지대에서 총소리 수류탄 터지는 소리 지옥같았데요. 포천으로 넘어오면 어쩌나 긴장하며 내무반에서 뉴스보던 기억... 종전협정이요? 코미디 같은 소리에요. 쟤들은 변하지 않습니다. 남한에선 전쟁은 없다며 흥청망청 거품경기 최고 호황이던 1996년에 저런 사건이 있었다는거..

The North Korean soldiers or the South Korean military? The NK soldiers got killed except for 1 who surrendered and is now being protected by SK and another who s missing. The bodies have returned to NK I believe after they were buried in the controversial NK China cemetery (Not sure about this one tho).

맞습니다. 우리는 우리의 역사를 너무나 잘 잊어버립니다. 원수는 용서하지만 그 사건은 절대잊어버리지 않고 기억하고 절대로 다시는 그런 일들이 생기지 않도록 해야하는데 연평도 사건만해도 분명히 북한에서 공격한 것임에도 불구하고 지금 말도 안돼는 소리를 하는 사람들이 있으니 이 나라가 걱정입니다

I hope that sub is maintained. It’s nice to see a coastal submarine (that’s the type of submarine it is, a Sang-O-class coastal submarine) that can be explored. Interesting fact, one source indicates that it was so cramped some of the spies actually slept in the torpedo tubes. It’s actually not the smallest type of submarine the North Koreans use. They also have midget submarines (the Yugo-class) which are less than two thirds the size of the coastal submarine on display, yet is still supposed to be manned by up to six people. As for the missing man, we now know based on North Korean propaganda that memorialized the spies that he never made it back to Korea, as his name is listed among the dead, so he probably died, but his body was never found. One name the propaganda doesn’t list is the sole survivor of the infiltration mission, who was captured alive. He defected and is now a naval advisor for the South Korean navy. I don’t think you would ever be able to meet him though, as I believe his identity and location are kept secret due to multiple North Korean assassination attempts. He was literally drafted into the North Korean navy at the age of 14 and from then on was confined to a naval base. As such, he remembers little of what life was like outside of the military, or even much about what North Korea looks like outside the base. I read an article about him. He had been so isolated on that North Korean base that he knew little other than military doctrine. He even had difficulty understanding how currency works, thinking that paper money with a higher currency value would be bigger in size than a bill with less value.

남북 모두에게 불행한 역사의 한 조각이죠.. .. 해안에 죄초되었을때.. 그냥 항복했으면 남북 모두 사상자를 내지않고 끝낼수 있는 사건이었는데.. 그놈의 사상이 뭔지....... 자기들 승무원을 자기들 손으로 스스로 총쏴 죽이고.. 또 북으로 육상을 통해 탈출하겠다고 하다가 또 대한민국의 어린 군인들 12명이나 죽고... 결국에 자기들도 다 죽게된... .. 남북의 이념의 반목과 서로에 대한 편견이 나은 어이없는 사건이었죠. .. 과거 동서독이 베를린장벽을 가운데두고 서로를 향해 총쏘던 냉전시대의 그런 현실처럼..그곳 강릉에서도 참 어이없이 벌어진 사건이었죠.(예기치 않은 침투 작전....) .. 당시 햔장에서 돌아가신 대한민국 군인분들의 명복을 빕니다. .. 바트님은 혹시 너무 역사에 몰입되어 있다고 생각하지 않으세요?. 가끔은 한국음식 소개 .. 한국인과의 음주 잡담... 가족여행 모습 ..등등 이런 영상도 좋을 것 같은데요.. 특히 한국의 아름다운... 자연 그리고 멋진 도시풍경도 한국을 소개할 좋은 우튜브 영상이 될 것으로 보이는데요.. 약사적 내용도 좋지만 .. 현실적 아름다움도 좋은 소개 꺼리가 될것 같습니다. ..
