Yemen, a country in the southwestern Arabian Peninsula was created following the unification of North and South Yemen in 1990, before that two separate states had existed as a result of the British protectorates in the south and a theocracy in the north. In this video, find out about the vexilological history behind these countries.

The Yemen's old scimitar sword flag is cool, but not as cool as Wales' red dragon flag.

My favorite weapon flags are the ones that show the weapons in use. The Nottinghamshirian flag shows Robin Hood shooting a bow and the flag of the Kingdom of Benin shows someone using a sword to decapitate someone.

I think flag changes symbolize socio-political, cultural, and territorial transformations of a country.

There are more flags actually. Especially in the south, such as the Sultanate of Lahj, the Sultanate of Mahra, the Qaiti Sultanate, and the Kathiri Sultanate.

These flags were suppressed after the Federation of South Arabia became the centralized, one party state of South Yemen. Only the flag of the old Mahra sultanate is still seen on occasion. Mahra still exists as a governate, and is the homeland of the Mahri people, who speak a South Arabian language of their own. The flag is now taken to represent this community.

Flutting in the high, my heart is playing, red is the color of freedom.. and the white of humanity.. Black is a past that we destroyed with the light of the Yemeni sun.🦅🇾🇪

Too many tricolor flags now, barely any with swords or dragons. Very lame in my opinion

Yemen followed in the footsteps of other Arab and Muslim nations choosing the relatively simple pan Arab colours over a flag of historical importance like that of the Mutawakkilite Kingdom.

a brief comment at 1:40, while the egyptian flag looks visually inspired from the arab revolt flag it does not have the same symbolism for the colors (probably because the free officers wanted to distance themselves from any monarchist attachment and that the arab revolt flag was associated with hashimite kingdoms which the officers saw as just british agents) so the official symbolism of most of the arab republican flags is red for the martyrs, white for peace, black for darkness and oppression of colonial times. that's also why it gets changed to this tricolor after the coups that changes these kingdoms into republics (as all there coups were mostly inspired or conspired by Nassir)

The previous flag was better. A national flag is supposed to be readily distinguishable from all others.

Just a guess but perhaps the 5 stars of the flag of the Yemeni Imamate represent the ahlul kisa' the people of the cloak. Namely the prophet Muhammad (saw) Fatimah Zahra (as) Imam Ali (as) Imam Hasan (as) and Imam Hussein(as). Since the Zaydis are followers of the ahlul kisa' and their righteous descendants
