During the dying days of 1945, the small town of Fayetteville in West Virginia played host to a horrendous tragedy. A huge blaze tore through a local household, seemingly claiming the lives of five young children in the process. But the failure of authorities to locate their remains, coupled with a series of bizarre occurrences in the aftermath of the incident ultimately posed the question, what happened to the Sodder Children?

After reading about this case a few years ago, my biggest question was about the photo the family received years later, allegedly of a grown Louis. The photo was given lots of public exposure, and if it wasn't really of their son, why did no one recognize the picture and the person in it, and come forward to say "that's not your son, that's my cousin Phil" or "that's a picture of me - someone's trying to trick you"? It just seems odd that no one recognized the young man in the photo and came forward with information to support or discredit the claim that it was really the Sodder's son.

@@audreymuzingo933 Questions mean nothing if there are no answers to be had. The video gave you what factual information there is and several plausible, and not so plausible, theories. If by chance you're gonna ask about the bones that were from a "17-22" year old person, 3 things to bear in mind. Firstly if they had been exposed to fire, it would be almost impossible to get an accurate idea of the real age in those days with the lack of modern genetics and medical technology. Secondly, even if they were the remains of one of the children, that still doesn't account for the others who are still missing so it's really a moot point. Thirdly, they could have easily been Civil War remains that were buried on the land as unnamed and unlisted skirmishes happened all over the country. Any other question than that is just pointless really as there's no way to find the answer.

A few factors I’ve wanted to know more about with this mystery: -cremating an adult might be different than a young child. Children have more bones but they also have a lot of cartilage. Maybe for the younger of the set, there really would be little left. -why would someone abscond with five children? Yes, they can be intimidated into being quiet, but what is the long term goal? Human trafficking as further punishment? If yes, wouldn’t you want to rub that in the parents’ face for maximum anguish? While not knowing your kids’ fate is just as tormenting, It just seems unrealistic that they’d abduct the kids with the intention of leaving this specific mystery. Either way, I don’t think the kids lived long after the fire, if they were not in the house.maybe they were going to ransom them but changed their minds?
@Harkeilla
@Harkeilla 4 жыл бұрын
Cremation between adults and children is pretty much the same. Both go into a furnace, flesh, muscle and all that burnt to a crisp, and bones put through a crusher. Is he only real difference is body size, taking longer to burn and trying up the bones for an adult.

Excellent artwork! Several details were left out to keep the story more mysterious. The ladder was moved by a man who decided to rob the Sodder's while the fire was unfolding. He took the ladder to cut the power lines, but cut the phone line by mistake. The lights stayed on during the fire, indicating the wiring was not the cause of the fire. John Sodder told police that morning that he had shaken his now missing siblings awake, before running from his attic bedroom. His parents eventually came to believe that he lied about doing so out of guilt for not having saved his siblings from their fiery end. Over the years, John was the one survivor of that night who just wanted his family to let it go and move along - survivor’s guilt? The strange midnight phone call was looked into, with some speculating it was somebody who knew that an arson was about to be attempted and wanted to wake the family. The woman was eventually found and it was determined to simply be a wrong number. Jeanie's brother claimed to see body parts the morning after the fire, but spared his sister the horror of seeing her children's remains. With all the questions surrounding the case and the authority’s lackluster search for remains in the immediate aftermath of fire led to the family requesting and receiving an excavation of the house site in 1949, in order to attempt to find bones and settle once and for all if the kids died in the fire or were somehow kidnapped beforehand. The excavation search was led by Oscar Hunter, a well-regarded pathologist. Hunter said that he expected to find large bones and thus the crew did not “screen” the soil. His expert opinion was that the fire was not intense enough to have incinerated bones thoroughly. Hunter was successful at locating some vertebrae at the house site but the bones were determined to belong to a person between 16-22 years old and the bones showed no exposure to fire! The oldest missing child was only 14 years old. It is believed that the vertebrae found were brought in to the scene accidentally when George hauled the dirt in to bury the house a few days after the fire. What unfortunate soul would up in a dirt mound is also unknown. A letter did come into the local detective agency months later that claimed a grave was dug up in a nearby cemetery to supply the bones. The family became so compelled to find the truth and perhaps blinded by grief that even their own relatives came under suspicion. The Sodders had Jeanie’s brother investigated in Florida and he had to prove that his children were actually his own. The family also investigated reports of the children being seen in a Mexican border town and George made a trip to New York after seeing a picture in a magazine of a girl in a ballet class that he felt looked like one of his missing daughters. He was not allowed access to the girl.

I believe the 5 youngest children were taken from the house before the fire was started. The mother last saw them at 10:00 pm, when she told them they could stay up late because it was Christmas Eve. She took the baby and went upstairs to bed. When she was awakened by the 12:30 am phone call, she only saw Marion (the oldest daughter) asleep on the couch - she assumed the younger children had gone up to the attic - she didn't see them. Martin and Louis were supposed to put the cows in and feed the chickens before going to bed themselves, which means they would have gone outside in the dark. Maybe Martha, Jennie and Betty went outside with them, and that's when they were taken? I do believe those 5 kids were already gone from the house before it was set ablaze. As of 2015, the last surviving sibling, baby Sylvia, still believes her siblings did not die in that fire, and still actively follows all leads. May she find the truth before she leaves this life.

Smoke inhalation is actually the leading cause of death in house fires. People can succumb to it very quickly. That is why it's so important to stay low while exiting a burning building and to exit as quickly as possible. There is a lot of info about it, but as an example: www.tn.gov/commerce/news/2019/4/30/sfmo--smoke-inhalation-is-more-dangerous-than-burns-in-home-fires.html I don't know what happened to the Sodder children. The fact that their remains were not found is very suspicious. But, if they did perish in the fire, it would probably have been due to smoke inhalation. The entire story is such a terrible tragedy.

I doubt they were actually in the house when the fire started. The 5 that didn't make it out, had asked to stay up later since it was Christmas and Jenny agreed as long as they did their chores before going to bed. Some of their chores involved feeding animals that were outside. Personally, I think they went outside to do their chores and ended up seeing whoever had moved the ladder and sabotaged the trucks. To keep the kids from raising the alarm, I think I they killed them and disposed of the bodies. Most likely they assumed that everyone would die in the house and no one would be counting the bodies to be worried that a few were missing.

What was the relationship like between them? And the family back in Italy in general? You might find evidence pointing back that way.

Dwain, Richard and Mikey.. these fellas have come so far. Frig I remember a couple years back this channel had like 2k subs and I was showing this channel to my friends. Couldn’t fathom how so much work could be put into every episode and somehow no one knew about this channel. Couple years later, 400k! Hard work is paying off fellas, you guys take stories obscure and even well known and bring a totally new spin and insight to each tale. Never gets old. Nothing helps me sleep better than a good Bedtime Story

I’ve always really admired how the channel deals with the loss of people. It’s fun to theorise and play around with conspiracies but it’s important to remember that these are real people with families and friends and this channel always acknowledges that and sends their condolences to those involved

This is such a distressing story. If there were no remains found it would be safe to assume that the children were taken. Some of them where at an age that they would remember their parents but may have been told they died Ilona the fire. That could be the reason they wouldn’t have searched for other family members. Only God truly knows what happened. I feel sorry for all the suffering the parents had to go through. 🧐🧐🧐😢😢

Sometimes the scariest monsters aren't ghosts, demons or aliens. I know it's the point, but this video is way scarier than I thought it would be. Another masterclass from this channel. Side note: Historically, one of Mussolini's first acts was diminishing the power of the Sicilian Mafia. They were no fans of Mussolini or his fascist government-to the point where they actively aided the invasion of Sicily by the Allies. I do agree that the Chief's official story reeks of BS and that he was probably paid off or threatened but I'm not sure investigators have the right suspects.

Exactly. It’s what happened at Hinterkaifche with the entire family being exterminated. No one knows why but I have a feeling it was to remove what the killer viewed as a stain. I think herr Grubber did something that lead to that family’s death. Sins of the father indeed.

@@enikata7349 I know about that but it’s not known for certain if her son was a product of incest. I know the whole "Epstein didn't kill himself" has become somewhat of a meme these days, but honestly I agree. A morally rotten tycoon gets away with decades of practically public indecency, has a little black book of every single high society person he's ever known/"entertained", and is later found dead in his cell, labled a suicide while more and more evidence comes out to point the contrary. Sounds like a good Bedtime Story to me.

One of the most ill-planned cover ups in U.S. history. Even if he did die naturally or suicide, no one would still believe it due to all the curious circumstances around him. He killed himself when the guards were on break, no one to take their place? Video was 'offline'? Did anyone actually 'try' in this conspiracy? It's like the art of cover ups is a 'lost' one.

You should do the the Joshua Berry story. He was a farmer in Baskin Louisiana whose truck was found in the woods with the driver's side door open, keys in the ignition, and front seat folder forward. All of his things were still in the truck. There were no immediate signs of foul play. The entire area was combed and nothing turned up. Then, 7 years later, a man found the remains of a man half a mile where the truck was found. It was Berry. The death is still being investigated as "suspicious." His mother believes that he was murdered.
