@@F-Andre it's Ridley Scott who ruined it. Would be better if they put scifi horror experts into designing the engineers remake Prometheus. Engineer stands over 8-9ft at least based on the size in alien 1979. It shouldn't walk like human based on interior design of derelict ship and could probably scale walls too since there's no ladder or stairs in the original ship. Aliens & predators movies don't expire, producers could always make sequels prequels themselves or sub franchise to others.

The Space Jockey was unusual and rather cool. The Engineers are basically just really tall, bald bodybuilders. Gone is the mystique of Gigers design; it's a real shame.

One of the reasons I LOVED Alien so much was because it left so many things unexplained. I also felt it was the most realistic (by far) Sci-fi movie I had seen and closely mirrored my 12 year old brains ideas of what space travel would really be like. I was a science nerd 🤓 and movies and TV (Star Wars, Star Trek, The Black Hole, Space 1999, Buck Rogers) etc, were too fanciful, full of junk science and the tech was way too unrealistic. 2001 A Space Odyssey was great but it was very human-centric and I didn't like the whole obelisk/star child theme. I totally bought into the tech in Alien and how the crew behaved and worked together. I liked "The Company" diverting Nostromo to check out a distress call but actually keeping the true motive and details secret from the expendable crew. There was no need to have Ash elaborate any further, the mystery added to the suspense. Had the budget been larger or the special effects been adequate the extra details would have ruined the mystery and resulting fear of all the unknowns in the movie. A great aspect of this movie was walking out of the theatre and everybody talking about what this meant, or what was that, or where did that come from and why. When all the answers are explained I believe your imagination is less invested in the story.

For the second movie here is what I thought the story would be. (Everybody knew there would be a second movie, even though sequels were rare back then) I thought the "Derelict" ship belonged to the Aliens we nicknamed the "Space Cowboys". I thought he was a gunner in a gun station, actually a living part of their living organic ship and fused with the gun. Kane thought the rest of the crew left in escape pods and I thought the Space Cowboy, unable to leave and infected already heroically chose a tiny dark frozen backwater moon to crash his on and then warn others to stay away. I thought both the Space Cowboy's and the Creature Aliens (I don't recall learning the name Xenomorph in the first film...I could be wrong) were from somewhere very far away from Sol in our galaxy. That would explain why they were unknown to humans. I thought the Creature Aliens either were stowaways or cargo that surprised and attacked the Space Cowboys. I was hoping for a sequel primarily about these two completely alien life forms explaining the backstory and humans either only having a minor role or better yet no role in the story. I was just so tired of everything revolving around humans in Sci-if movies. I was bitterly disappointed when Ridley Scott left and John Carpenter directed Aliens. I liked Aliens but it was not the same story and I was always left wondering WTF? I like Prometheus and will probably like Covenant but obviously RS had a different vision that I. I'm not crazy about all the religious symbolism and theme and I'm sorry to see the story again very human centric in nature.

I've always thought the Space Jockey was different from the Engineers. I suppose some where within the branch of these higher life creating beings. It just looks more massive as shown in Alien once the crew steps in and around the Space Jockey, and as the camera pans out you really see the scale compared to humans. Many say that the space jockey appears fossilized and fused to the pilot- control seat/module, which also lead me to believe that the suit itself could've been made from an organic material...This is so interesting. Also there was a unknown transmission that was received in Alien, could this have been the Engineers?... Perhaps it maybe a future video (; thank you sir

The way the Pilot control seat/module looks it almost appears as some kind of weapon, cannon (which in the movie it was made some what clear that it was indeed not a weapon) In a documentary about H.R Giger titled H.R Giger's Necronomicon(If you guys have not yet seen it I encourage you all to check it out, it is here on youtube) He mentions that he incorporates guns, knives and other weapons to show the "Aggressiveness" of his "Monsters" and characters. It is possibly a subliminal to show the more militant side of these Engineers that transport the dangerous black chemical.

The book "Aliens river of pain" which tells us what happened to Hadley's hope describes Russ and Anne Jordan's (newts parents) trip into the ship. They saw what Russ referred to as "holding pins" with signs of forced exit in them. They continued on and the saw the dead bodies of engineers and xenomorphs. Later they saw the dead body of the queen. On their way out they saw the room with the eggs and decided to check it quickly. They were smart enough not to look into them, but one of the eggs sill opened and the facehugger managed to jump onto his face. My theory is that they were bringing the xenomorphs somewhere, when they escaped, and reeked havoc. The space jockey was impregnated, and got onto the navigations systems in an attempt to land them on the planet but during that time the chest bursted came out. The room the eggs were in was made to hold them.

When I first saw the original Alien and for a long time afterward I assumed the eggs were what was left of the rest of the crew, not the ships cargo. James Cameron changed things around a lot in his sequel with the introduction of the alien Queen, which really served no purpose other than being a big scary boss type monster at the end of the movie.

Certainly seems to make sense. Though it still doesn't explain why this Space Jockey was so friggin huge! It doesn't help that Riddley Scott went out of his way in the original Alien to emphasize this fact by having children play the rolls of Cain, Lambert and Dallas to give the illusion of how big that alien was for that scene.

We don't currently know if the space jockey is an Engineer or another species, despite being larger but the suit is somehow similar to that of the Engineers and also the command chair, anyhow if they made it appear in Prometheus then we wouldn't have a sequel in the form of Covenant!

I believe they are the same spieces, not only because of the many similarities, but Ridley said in an interview that Prometheus started as an idea to explain "what the dead creature in the beginning of the Alien film was". I think of it like the same but slightly redesigned.

In Alien, the spaceship is a bio-mechanical entity. The Space Jockey never left the chair because he doesn't have any legs. The creature is over 30 feet and is described by Dallas as: 'Alien life form. Looks like it's been dead a long time. Fossilized. Looks like it's growing out of the chair.Bones are bent outward, like he exploded from inside'. The process of fossilisation takes a minimum of 30,000 years, what you are looking at is a skeleton, not just of the Space Jockey, but the entire ship. The walls are lined with fossilised bones, the ship was once a living creature. The platform that the chair is seated on is not designed to be walked upon, and the tunnels that the crew use to gain entry are far too small for the space jockey, even if he had legs. Either a face hugger got inside and the resulting chest burster was a Queen which later laid the eggs that the crew find, or the Space Jockey was transporting the eggs (because of the blue field keeping the eggs in tropical conditions) and one egg hatched releasing the face hugger which impregnates the Space Jockey. We are never meant to know the origin of the Space Jockey, it is lost to thousands of years and thousands of light years. It is similar to John Carpenter's The Thing, a ship crashed on earth because the pilot is a victim of another hostile alien entity, the ship gets covered by the Ice Age and lays for 100,000 years before being discovered. In Prometheus, a 30 foot fossilised creature becomes a 10 foot bald guy in a space suit and renamed as an Engineer. The Lovecraftian theme of eldritch horror is replaced by black goo, DNA and the origin of life.

I like your thinking on this. The idea that the space jockey had no legs and was fused to the chair - that it was genetically bred to sit in the navigator's seat for the entire span of its existence - is chilling, implying that it was genetically bred to be a slave of sorts. Similarly the organic look of the juggernaut both inside and out add to the impression of organic technology. Another thing - the space jockey's elephantine proboscis is visibly fused to its sternum. It's one of the most haunting, illogical and inexplicable things about it - and yet I have never heard or read one single comment acknowledging this. Soft muscle tissue such as an elephant's trunk would atrophy long before the process of fossilisation got under way. Which implies that that calcified tube welding its head to its chest is made of bone. Such a bone structure would cripple the being, rendering it unable ever to stand fully upright - in which case why would such a thing ever evolve a spine? It's illogical and disturbing and just like the visibly asymmetrical design of the juggernaut (what could possibly be more universal than the laws of symmetry?) hints at an undiscovered intelligence which to us humans is truly 'alien' - which as other respondents have remarked is so much so as to be evocative of Lovecraft.

Your account makes perfect sense. I have an alternate idea, though. The space jockey race had nothing to do with creating the xenomorphs. Their ship shown in Alien had landed somewhere (perhaps the xenomorph home planet?) and the pilot was infected by a facehugger without realizing what it meant. That is, the space jockey ship's experience paralleled that of the Nostromo much later. A xenomorph emerged from the space jockey (killing him and leaving his body as it was found by Dallas in Alien) and hunted down the rest of the crew, transforming them into the eggs which Kane later found in the ship's cargo hold. That xenomorph later died of old age or whatever they die of, and at some point during all this the ship landed on LV-426 -- a trap later found by the Nostromo. This is supported by Lambert's throwaway line "I wonder what happened to the rest of the crew" -- the later deleted scene in which we find out that the xenomorph can transform victims into eggs is supposed to suggest that that's what happened to the rest of the space jockey crew. If you want to ignore the deleted scene, an alternate version is that the one which emerged from the space jockey was a queen and laid all the eggs found in the cargo hold. The rest of the space jockey crew either escaped or were killed and eaten by the queen, or perhaps it was a one-man ship, despite its size.

Hmmm. Still it doesn't explain as to what happened to the Alien that burst from the Jockey. Makes a hell of a lot more sense that the jockey was impregnated with a queen, which after killing the pilot and crashing the ship grew and produced the eggs that are found on the derelict by Kane and Co. Because, you know, crashing the ship with the eggs already on board would have made a hell of a mess and spoiled that nice little garden we see in 'Alien'.

The Space Jockey was intended as a biomechanical life form, fused to the ship. This was the intention of Dan O’Bannon, HR Giger, and even Ridley Scott back in 1977 - 1979. It has absolutely nothing to do with the Prometheus “engineers”, which were a stupid retcon of the original idea, created 30 years later by Ridley and friends - in order to shoehorn a silly God story into the franchise, and make whole universe seem small and about Humans and their “creators”. Any study of “the Space Jockey” should be about its original intended form only. The rest is garbage.

Promotheus retro-conned the space-jockey as a human, and the elephantine head became a space helmet. A problem is the disparity between the huge size of the creature in the first Alien, and the smaller stature in Promotheus. This muddies the waters a lot, making Ridley Scott's original conception of the Space-Jockeys/Engineers uncertain and confusing.

The Space Jockey on Lv426 was one of only a few survivors after David unleashed the goo on Planet ?. After David created the Face huggers, he stowed some on each Juggernaut ship in case anyone tried to use one to escape. One of the last surviving "engineers" took the ship with intentions to go to LV223 to learn of what happen and to tell of what has just happen to their world... For all he knows LV223 is still full of Army Engineers.. But as he almost made it, the Face hugger impregnated him resulting in him crashing to the near by LV426 Leaving a Juggernaut ship full of Face Hugger Eggs and a distress signal. I'm no writer. But it could work if tweaked...

When we get Zippideedoodah Prime I'm gonna tell the captain to stick this clipboard up his primary anus. Man, it is warm down here. Think I'll take a nap. That'll show him." 28 hours later. Not noticing empty egg nearby. "Wow...must have been tired. I can't believe I slept that long. Ugh, no more pancakes for lunch. My stomach feels like shit. In my opinion, the Alien prequel should have been about a crew of Space Jockeys only..no humans. The plot of the story would involve the Space Jockeys travelling across space to deliver the alien cargo to Earth or some other planet. Once they arrive, their orders would be to leave the eggs on the planet which will release the facehuggers to seek out potential hosts for their alien embryos. However, one of the Space Jockeys actually develops a conscience, and realizes this mission needs to be stopped for ethical and/or moral reasons. He refuses to carry out the mission. Consequently, his superior commander orders him to be arrested and detained for insubordination. However, the rebel Space Jockey eventually breaks free from his cell. He fights and kills the other crew members, and successfully commandeers the ship. Unfortunately, during the violent struggle for control of the ship, an alien facehugger hatches from its egg. It attacks the lone Space Jockey and implants an embryo in him. Realizing the inevitable fate that he faces, he decides to crash the ship on LV-246. As he completes the process of transmitting the acoustical beacon from his ship as a warning to everyone, the alien bursts from his chest, and the Space Jockey dies. This last scene slowly fades into darkness with the sound of the beacon being transmitted into outer space. Thousands of years later, the Nostromo intercepts the signal.

Yes, it's similar to how I've thought of it. Be it a bombing ship or a cargo ship, the Engineer would get infected and crash, or perhaps lost control first and crashed which caused the statis to get interrupted, which made a Facehugger make it's way to him and infect him, or possibly he went down to inspect and got infected. Regardless, he set the warning and during the moment he set the warning beacon, the chestburster bursts out. I believe that's how ti was explained in the novelization of Alien in that aside from the voice, there's a shriek of some kind that sent shivers down the crews spine when they were listening to it. Giger and others I have heard originally intended for the massive Xenomorph to actually be on the planet, but dead from the eons that had passed. It'd be laying on the surface somewhere near the ship and you'd only had seen it if you were observant. But I believe that was changed.

I'd say it was impregnated before starting flying. It seems like they need to remain in the chair during flight and it's sealed pretty dang well, with only a hole where what looks like a chestburster came out of, yet there are no entry holes. The elephant trunk-like thing over their throat also seems like the perfect protection for facehuggers trying to choke them out.

The Engineers also creates the xeno's from the black goo and wants to kill Humans by using the black too. Humans create Androids, Androids (David), feels superior to Humans and wants to kill them. David modifies the Engineers black goo, to enhance the xeno species using the Engineers and Humans DNA. Its like the circle of life...creators killing their creation... Atleast that's how I look at it.

the shear and utter lunacy that Ridley Scott wrought upon the fanbase in Prometheus is truly amazing, you can tell that the fossilized remains of the Space Jockey were clearly showing exposed bone, and NOT a space-suit of some kind for the 'Engineers' to wear.. this was once a living being long since dead by that alien 'face hugger' there was no hint of foreign material to show a suit! that was a total FAIL, sometimes the mystery of the question is far better than the answer is, so it's true in this case...

What about an alternate timeline? Maybe the events on Prometheus changed the original timeline, the space Jockey would supposedly end up on the planet they found him in Alien movie had a different tragic ending. Maybe the androids found a way to communicate with the past sending information. So an expedition that in the original timeline did not exist formed, in order to change the events and maybe create something more evolved (Deacon?). Or the engineers are just evolved humans from the future that have found time travel in order to evolve our species in order to find "God" or to be godlike.

Considering Aliens Colonial Marines is canon by fox, that easter egg could be considered canon as well. As for the space jockey, I think the alien burst from its chest while the jockey was in low orbit and the damage it made, caused the crash. Pretty similiar to your theory.

See I always thought it was a huge facehugger that latched into him while he was piloting even using the chair behind him to pin him down. Then the space jockey crashed killing both of them in the process but he was already impregnated and eventually a chest burster came out. Then over time the space jockey and they face hugger melded together being fossilized.

I was extremely disappointed by the decision by Ridley Scott to make the space jockey just a "space suit". Ridley is a great filmmaker. Unfortunately, he's severely lacking in the area of storytelling. Based on what we've seen in Covenant, I shudder to think what is in store for us in future Alien movies. That is, if Ridley is even allowed to make another film based on the lukewarm reception of the most recent film. It's important to remember that the original Alien wasn't really Ridley's idea. That credit goes to Dan O'bannon and Ron Shusett. Ridley only added a few minor elements. And of course, more was added to the universe by James Cameron's Aliens movie. Ridley obviously has a story or concept that he wants to shove down viewers throats and, sadly, this is not working out very well. We'll see as time goes on but I'm not very hopeful. And if any future projects by Ridley get shut down by the studio, we will probably not see any attempts by other filmmakers because I'm sure Ridley will hold the property tightly in his grip. Neill Blomkamp's cancelled Alien 5 movie comes to mind... :/ I highly recommend that any Alien fan watch the fantastic making of documentary that was included on later releases of the film. love the prometheus pre"trilogy" news that series, that and the game alien isolation really got me into the alien films, although i only really liked the first alien the second one for me was to action based and i found it more funny than anything eles but the prometheons, the deadly classic alien, the humans earth, the androids and that law is all really interesting great videos.

I like to believe that there was more to it than just a malfunction causing some eggs to open. Prometheus has many problems, one of wich is the fact that the engineers seem to be very bad at containing the black goo and its creations. In my own head, I like to believe that there were enough security measures in place for the engineers to easily deal with a single facehugger or even a more substantial outbreak. The idea of a battle between creators and destroyers or something of that kind seems a lot more appealing, although it is not considered canon.

Love the ideas, or maybe a variation of them, but the problem is that there's no way of getting there from the Prometheus/Covenant storyline. There were no eggs in Prometheus, just metallic canisters that had a vaguely similar shape. Covenant suggest that David created the first egg. Also, the Space Jockey is so different in appearance to the Engineers. My only hope is that in future installments, Daniels & Tennessee will uncover: that the derelict on LV426 was from a centuries old mission; that the Space Jockey race were a victim of Alien infection; that the Engineers are advanced descendants of the Space Jockeys, and are dedicated to protecting the universe from the Alien species through their genetic experiments, which went catastrophically wrong on the Prometheus planet; that David did his experiments in the 10 year journey for his own reasons having studied the Engineers historical databases and created a version of the Alien. I hate the idea of the Engineers being destructive and that they planned to destroy humanity, and hope this can be 'corrected' in future films.

(SPOILER) The book Alien: River of Pain explains a bit more about the derelicts' interior, when Newts' parents explore it they find more dead engineers and xenomorphs including a queen and engineer who fought and killed each other. Looks to me like the ship crashed when the pilot died and the chestburster grew into a queen infecting the crew. The last of the engineers on board had nowhere to go as the ship was totalled so they set up the distress beacon then fought a final battle with the xenos, resulting in both groups being wiped out.

for me, Space Jockey IS NOT an 'Engineer' in a Elephant-suit... I've never liked this. It makes no sense, scale and functionality and the way he looks GROWN INTO his chair of drivage. I think a better name is Space Trucker, and the eggs are some sort of Luxury Cargo or Space Delicacy. Not (bio)weapons. Safe landing on LV426. Remember, Giger's art was brimming with Pure Erotica. Who's to suggest he didn't have some idea of what Space Trucker's cargo would be used for in the Galacti-Porn-verse. Someone should have asked The Master, and all this Prometheus-horror would be explicitly over.
