You forgot to mention something about Seraphon/Skaven: The Lizardmen f***ed up the Skaven so bad (probably during the End Times, or maybe it was Sotek afterwards) that the mere sight of Seraphon can apparently trigger PTSD flashbacks to Lustria in Skaven. I may be in the minority on this, but as someone that started with Tomb Kings, back in the day, I just don't see the similarities to the Bonereapers. Don't get me wrong, I like them, but I don't really see more than superficial similarities.

Aphotep It wasn’t necessarily any one event, I don’t think (although it might’ve been the mass killings of Skaven by the red host that ended up bringing sotek into the world) but their combined history of slaughter. In the story that comes from there’s a single skaven that’s watching a battle between seraphon and his clan that’s so much of a brutal, violent stomp that he just starts screeching and wailing in fear, as the memories of lustria (a place few of the currently existing skaven have never been, or even know existed) came flooding into his mind

One thing that jumped out at me: You mention Dragon Princes in particular as being part of the Free Cities book, but this does not seem to be the case. Around the time the book was announced, pretty much everything High Elf except the Phoenix Temple got discontinued. (The exceptions are Sisters of Avelorn, now called Sisters of the Watch, which are now in the Wanderers sub-faction due to their link with Alarielle, and Shadow Warriors, probably because they're in a dual kit with the Sisters.) This suggests to me that the discontinued units will not be in Free Cities, particularly since most of these subfactions have, AFAIK, not been mentioned in any of the stories. The optimistic viewpoint is that it's going to turn out that the Order Draconis, Lion Rangers, Eldritch Council, and so on have been absorbed into Tyrion's crusade and they'll get re-released with new models when his turn does come around. The cynical and, I have to say, probably more likely possibility is that the Stormcast mugged them in an alley and stole their stuff (for instance, the Order Draconis and the Stormcast Extremis Chamber are both noble dragon-themed cavalry forces supported by actual dragons) and GW squatted them because they were seen as being redundant.

I more or less see AoS 1st Edition much like Rogue Trader for 40k - a rough foundation for what later editions will refine. As someone who got into AoS just before 2nd Edition launched, I'm frankly fascinated to see how the setting and story progresses and glad that I got over my initial "hate on principle because the internet told me to" outlook on the setting.

I find it hard to get into AOS because the games I've seen remind me a lot of 40K. Model count is lower vs what 40K has ballooned into but there are a lot of similarities in the big picture. It actually reminds me a bit of when Hordes first came out for Warmachine, more fantasy vs Sci-fi ascetic, some twists for the rules, but quite similar. At this rate I would not be shocked if they combined the universes 2-3 editions down the line, like the way Hordes and Warmachine were compatible. I'm personally more interested in the lore than the game. Thanks for making these vids, though personally I'll stick to 8th and 9th Age for games, as it's something further from 40K than AOS.

The Thunderscorn beastmen subfaction gets cooler if you remember that, way back in the days of Realms of Chaos, you could actually play a Dragon Ogre Chaos Champion in your games of Path to Glory - they had the unique ability to generate followers from both the Beastman Champion retinue table and the Minotaur Champion retinue table, so they could be followed by either literal herds of beastmen, or they could lead a force made up of some of the biggest monsters of the edition, or try to walk a balance between the two.

@andrewpotter75145 жыл бұрын
I don't know, what is cool for one person could be trash to another person. If I was trying to be kind I would say that GW are trying to target a younger audience by throwing out "cool" stuff and seeing what sticks without worrying too much about the lore. Obviously lore is not a static thing so I can get better (or worse) over time, but that is the same excuse I made years ago. I think the telling thing for me is that in recent years there have been plentiful Warhammer fantasy video games that have really fuelled interest in Warhammer. These however are pretty much all based on the old world, I have yet to see anything big for AoS.

The downside was that the air rifle was very expensive and needed a lot of maintenance, so you had to train the soldiers that where to use the weapon extensively as repairs on the battlefield was all but impossible. In a way it was to firearms of the area as the King Tiger was to tanks of WW2. Very good at what it was supposed to do when used correctly but never enough of them and they cost too much to maintain. You can read about one of these rifles on Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girandoni_air_rifle

Thanks for making this video. It was VERY well made. Overall I am gutted by all this. It doesn’t look like fantasy any more. Way too much gold and just silly to change the names of things. They must realise it is a mistake to change the names of the races. I get they wanted a revamp but I have seen nothing from this version to compel me to get into it. So many humans now look like space marines. How could they not see it?
@TanitEB5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video Sotek! You actually make the lore sound interesting, I went into a Games Workshop and the employee there not only couldn't make the new lore sound good, he wasn't even aware of the old lore of Warhammer, let alone how to transition someone into the new who loved the old. When I asked about the transition from 'old lore', he thought I meant first edition Age of Sigmar, which was not that long ago. When he realized he had no idea what I was talking about he just shut up and went to another area of the store even though I was the only customer. It was super awkward . . . I was also really put off by a backhanded insult in September's White Dwarf in the article about Gotrek Gurnisson where they imply that anyone who doesn't like what Games Workshop has done with the lore can shove it, because even Gotrek Gurnisson is willing to having a beer with an Orruk (Ugh, dislike the poorly contrived copyright names, some are good like Sylvaneth, but others like Orruk and Ogor are just painful), and appreciate how awesome the 'mortal realms' are, which I thought was a silly way to put it, because he is a fictional character, of course he will like whatever the author wants him to like.
@TanitEB5 жыл бұрын
Also, following up on the copyright names, one thing I don't get, is that they already had copyrightable names for many things. Dawi=Dwarfs, Asur=High Elves, Asrai=Wood Elves, Druchii=Dark Elves, Dawi Zharr=Chaos Dwarfs. So . . . why did they have to change it to Duardin for Dwarfs and Aelfs (that one makes me cringe) for Elves. The pre-existing names were perfectly serviceable, recognizable by fans, and, especially for the Aelf one, better sounding. And if they wanted to make goblin into Grot like it is in 40k, why not make Orcs into Orks like in 40k? And Warhammer fantasy already had Gnoblar for diminutive greenskins, which I have not seen anywhere else, so why not use it for all goblinoids in fantasy in order to set fantasy apart from 40K? Even from a monetary standpoint it doesn't make sense to me, as they would most likely have had a copyright claim on Asur, Gnoblar and Dawi already, so why spend the extra money on adding Duardin and Aelf to the copyright? (someone else must have claimed that one already I would have thought, its so obvious, actually, I am reasonably confident I once read a poorly known fantasy book that called them that. I remember very little about it, except that one main character only had one arm and could still juggle.) Also, a quick google search reveals that Aelf is an Old English word for Elf, descending from the Proto-Germanic Albiz, Old High German Alb and Old Norse Alfr. Soooo . . .it really shouldn't be copyrightable at all right?

There are a TON of old models which are basically useless now. Empire knights never made it into Freeguild. Dwarf warriors, handgunners, quarrelers, and Empire archers (and huntsmen) just got axed in the new book. Same with most of artillery from the former Elf/Dwarf/Empires.
@mogwaiman60485 жыл бұрын
You can proxy most of the models that went out of production. For example, take dwarf thunderers and use them as handgunners.

@pavelsebesta79315 жыл бұрын
Right now, they are just memories. TLDR only real lizardmen are Slanns, who came into AoS on space ships from the old world, and all the other dinos are materialized by their magic from their memory. But it's gonna get changed/retconned/developed (developed i think most probly).....
@Aliencommander12455 жыл бұрын
Pavel Šebesta A short story about them came out last year that revealed that lizardmen are still spawned from the spawning pools that’re inside their ships. The slann still remember heroes and armies into existence (there’s one who’s skink priest is returned to life every time he falls in battle, always with a slightly different pattern as the slann remembers it differently) but new lizardmen are still spawned and die as living creatures too

@Daniel Olsson Exactly! She was the leader of the Cult of Pleasure, not the Cult of Khaine. She was always connected to either Slaanesh or Atharti, not Khaine. The Sword of Khaine even whispered to Aenerian, her husband, that he should kill her. I think this is an example of choosing Morathi to lead the Cult of Khaine because she is a better known and more marketable character.

Those are the Stormcast Eternal, they don't really have a counterpart in Warhammer Fantasy, basically they're people that have died heroically and were basically snatch up by Sigmar upon their death to become his immortal army, yes they look a lot like Space Marines and that kinda sucks because I think the Stormcast actually have some interesting Lore and quirks that make them more interesting than Space Marines, but they tend to get salty reactions because of their derivative design. The best pitch I can give you is that they're an army of Dark Souls character, they were former mortals that died and became immortal being, but with each death a bit of their old self dies until they inevitably become an automaton with all their memories and personalities wiped, and that terrifies them.
@ianbailey42134 жыл бұрын
@@InquisitorThomas Honestly they aren't even really that similar to space marines. Their design comes more from greco gladiators/ roman wolf pelts, or crusader tabards.
