great thing about poetry is it’s interpreted by the individual. Yea some poems have an essential meaning but everyone gets sumn different. that “fir on a barren land” poem compares a tree (fir) on a piece of land almost void of life (withering) and a tree needs life surrounding it to continue. I see love as life. Pieces of it (bark and leaves) aren’t growing anymore. it’s comparing that to the human need for love. If a tree doesn’t have what it needs to grow and be nurtured, just like a person without love then the question arises “why should it/he live a long life?” Fir trees are kinda tough though so there’s that too. That question is very important in this season.

remember Askeladd in season 1 saying "everyone is a slave to something"? after he said that, it cut directly to Thorfinn, and the implication was that Thorfinn was a slave to his rage. but even in a more literal sense, Thorfinn has spent his whole life being told what to do by Askeladd. he had to achieve the right to duel him again, and Askeladd was always the one who set the standard for how much of Thorfinn's labor a duel would cost. Thorfinn let Askeladd tell him what it meant to be worthy, all that time... and Askeladd, in order to control Thorfinn, always let him feel like he'd failed. even on the few occasions when Thorfinn did enough to earn a duel, his reward was to get beat up. Thorfinn has spent his whole life failing, and he's never made his own decisions. he's never learned how to be anything else... a slave is what he's always been.

I wasn‘t a big fan of Thorfinn in season 1, but after the season 2 and what happens beyond of that in the manga he actually became one of my favorite protagonist. I love what this arc is doing for the characters.

S2 is a MASTERPIECE, but the foundation for it was that great and it's just brilliant how the progresses the characters & story with everything we got in the prelude. Yeah Thorfinn like you said, is a man now without purpose.

Peakland Saga, it is time. I don't even know where to start. It must suck so much to be a slave, to have your family murdered or sold off and separated from you, I can't even imagine what they went through. Not to even mention that you're literally forced to live on someone elses terms and your life is basically in their hands. Einar was lucky to have such a good natured master buy him. As much as it sucked to be a slave, I imagine this would've probably been the best outcome one could've hoped for. And then we finally meet Thorfinn. A man that looks as dead as a burnt tree. He clearly lost his will to live and doesn't care about anything anymore now that his quest for revenge has come to an end. It sucks seeing him like this. Especially when compared to his previous self. The son of the master, Olmar, is a character I really grew to love. He seems like a pompous asshole but he'll grow on you, I'm sure. What Einar said about Olmar not knowing war and thinking warriors are probably cool goes so much for kid Thorfinn. I find it a nice paralell and it's gonna be good to see how a similar person can grow up. This season is gonna be slower as you might have felt in these two episodes, that puts people off. Same with Thorfinn being so "submissive". What these people don't understand is that when all you live for is one singular goal and you know nothing else but what you need to chase that goal, it's going to be hard to live life after you've achieved it or realized that you can never achieve it due to whatever reason. It's hard to pick yourself up after that. And this kind of story focusing on this part of someone who goes through this hardship in their life, is going to take time. They will need to find their way in life and that's not easy. I wish more people understood this story more in this sense and didn't only look at it as a show with just murdering and killing and cool fights or whatever. It was never about that.

24:20 you right, but not about Askeladd part. Askeladd had two TRUE interactions with Thorfin, once when they stand on the hill and Askeladd tries to explain his worldview to him. and second time when he was dying. both scenes show that Askeladd truly cared for Thorfin in a wicked way, but he did. this season uncovers true relationship of Thorfin and Askeladd, author shows in a really good manner what influence Askeladd had on Thorfin's personality growth. remember Thors was a cruel warrior too in the beginning, author catches the essence of human psychology. no human can find true peace without going through the hell first and I love that. Vinland Saga is out here teaching you more about life than anything else. so, Kids watch it closely, you are witnessing a true peak fiction.

also, I'll add that, Thors was a person who broke away from hell after realizing he was in it. Askeladd on the other hand knew from the start that he was in HELL, but never truly found a way to break out of it, that's why he became part of it.

Season 2 is a very well written arc that brings closure to Thorfinn's first arc from season 1. People say that it's completely different from the first one but to me that's not true at all. This story has always been extremely philosophical and focused greatly on the individual characters much more than the actual plot. The plot of the first season wasn't very complex however it was a very character-driven story. Season 2 on terms of plot is almost similar to 1 but remains as philosophical and character-driven as the first.
