The medal he got was the Distinguished Service Cross, the second highest award in the US military. It is awarded "for extreme gallantry and risk of life in actual combat with an armed enemy force." My guess is that this was awarded posthumously in World War I. What's impressive is that an African American soldier was given this award.

This is a great theory! His uniform in the photograph is undoubtedly a WW I combat uniform. There were African American units who served as laborers in the war as early as 1917. Since James was a laborer, he could have arrived at this time. He could have also arrived in early 1918 as part of the the 369th United States Infantry, a regiment of African-American combat troops who helped the French Army. I think they fought in the trenches for almost 200 days. The regiment also saw few casualties, so it would be entirely plausible for James to have given his life to save the lives of his fellow soldiers. So amazing!

@grace50335 жыл бұрын
He most likely died in WW1 . The movie's main events are confirmed to have been set in 1926. Since Tiana was 19 during the main plot and appeared to be around 5 in the beginning, the movie would have started around 1912. Since WW1 went from 1914-1918, that means Tiana was only a child or a preteen when her dad passed away. So sad... Edit: In "The Little Mermaid", when Grimsby is bringing Eric back to the castle, Eric says something about the princess of Glowerhaven, who was most likely another girl Grimsby had tried to set him up with in the past. Can you please do a video on that?? I know a lot of people have been requesting it recently. Another edit (lol): Thanks for making this video. I am a Louisiana native (Baton Rouge, specifically) so this movie has meant a lot to me ever since I saw it in theaters for the first time. I love how Tiana's father was portrayed. He went against the stereotype of the black man leaving his family, he worked so hard and you could tell he loved his family
@alexisgarcia13445 жыл бұрын
It's really important to place Tiana's story in context. New Orleans was STILL apart of the segregated South. That's really important to remember. The military reflected this as well. Through out history from Buffalo Soldiers to freedom fighters to the Tuskegee Airman, the first all black pilot squadron. Historically, Americans were called to fight in conflicts but African Americans or Black Americans were not acknowledged for their contribution. The likelihood that her father received the Distinguished Cross would not have come so soon. It might have come years later, in the 1960s during the Civil Rights Movement.
@ahmasijoseph19965 жыл бұрын
Well, maybe not in the 60s most of the US fought to keep segregation a thing. Some branches desegregated in the 1980s while some schools are still segregated today but mostly with the districting sending minority students to one underfunded school while they send white kids to a well funded one

If he had died in the war it likely would’ve included a Purple Heart. The Purple Heart medal is awarded to anyone injured while in combat for the military, and that includes soldiers that are mortally wounded and die. But I guess they could’ve just kept the more prestigious medal in plain view and left the Purple Heart aside. It takes a special kind of man just too serve in the military at all but some soldiers can get over a dozen Purple Hearts without ever getting mortally wounded or earning any more prestigious medal. For a black man to get a medal that prestigious in that time period though he would have had to have done something absolutely outstanding so the chance he earned that much notice for something he survived seems unlikely so maybe you’re right.

I like how he's excited telling his story. He seems like the best most heroic Disney Male figure period! Most Disney males start out bad and turn good after examples beauty and the beast tangled Pocahontas and so on

my favorite princess. Not only was she the first princess that looked like me , she was so hardworking and inspiring .

Hm, my grandma said that he just worked himself to death but I don't think she noticed any of the war details that you just gave.

He always reminds me of my grandfather, he had been in the army and almost participated in WW2 But was able to get out because of my aunts birth. But he is a very nice, polite, and compassionate man. Maybe a little too kind sometimes, but I have always looked up to him.

Totally trying not to cry while watching this video. A good man who had a hard life, he lives on in his daughter and wife and any descendants he would have

Wonderful video! Princess and the frog is one of my favorites! It puts more emphasis on the importance of love over worldly gain. Tiana is a wonderful role model, as is James!❤️

Probably your best video yet. Your research and passion is always a delight to watch, but the story of Tiana’s father transcends much!

they should do a part 2 where you know it jumps to like 30 years later she becomes old like mamma odie and these two orphins become frogs and they seek help to Tiana (who is old now) Just how tiana and Naveen had done in the first movie.

You certainly have a knack for making me appreciate characters who were either never in the story or no longer a part of it. Tiana's father reminds me a lot of my grandfather who was in the army and a great man, til cancer took him
