I think a big detail you missed out on is Sony itself. While media vision was the developer of the series, they got major support for Japan Studio, Sony's first party development studio who's developed stuff like Shadows of the Colossus and supported literal hundreds of other games over the decades. Unfortunately, this studio was divested in 2020, scattered to other places within Sony Computer Entertainment as part of a re-organization. This seems to have been a long time coming between the major, major success of Sony's western studios and the relatively lackluster sales of non-Gran Turismo Japanese games. The Last Guardian seemed to have been the big game that started this shift. Now, this doesn't delete any hope of a new Wild Arms, but it definitely hurts chances, since Sony itself doesn't seem too interested in anything within the genre as of now.

Wild Arms 4 killed the series as it is it's black sheep. The semi tactical system was not welcome by all people and it didn't felt like the old west anymore. Wild Arms 5 tried to fix some things but by the time it landed everyone moved on.

One thing about this series that I don't think gets praised often enough is its dungeon puzzle designs. Puzzles in Wild Arms are a lot more interesting than the usual "push all the boxes onto the switches" JRPG fare. Solutions would often require you to use your tools in clever ways, like using the fact that your throwing knives fall straight down when they hit a wall in order to flip a switch that's otherwise unreachable. I also think it's interesting that towns aren't actually on the world map at first; you have to talk to people for directions or clues and then go out and search on your own. Often the game doesn't even tell you where to go next, it just tells you to look around and find someone who can give you a lead. It isn't perfect (there were a few times in 3 where I had to just look at a guide), but I think it's kind of a cool idea that requires you to engage a bit more with the world and the NPCs. Also in 2 your treasure radar item is called the Booty Call. Like not only is that an incredible name, but it's just said with a completely straight face and nobody ever calls attention to it. which just makes it funnier

Wild Arms has such an iconic soundtrack and opening cinematic. And I really loved the original's use of the traditional isometric tileset style for its environments. The character models in battles did leave much to be desired, especially when compared to Final Fantasy VII's at the time, but the story really held it together. It was full of all the cliches you expect from JRPGs, but the story was told so well, you couldn't help but be engaged, anyway. The characters were really distinct in their designs and personalities as well. The writing's obviously not on par with what you get from the Tales series, but still strong enough to stand on its own. Wild Arms 3 was phenomenal in its presentation, and how it contained multiple stories. There were so many times where you think you just beat the game, but nope, that's just one of the game's many arcs. I can see why it'd be kinda hit or miss with some people, but no one can say they didn't get the bang for their buck on this game. Wild Arms 2 was unfortunately kind of average. I wish I could say I remember more from it, but I was still proud to have it in my collection as a fan and supporter of the series. I really hope we get a new one.

What happened to Wild Arms? Well in the end it might boil down to "Symphogear happened to Wild Arms". For those that don't know, Symphogear was an anime series that started in 2012, created by Noriyasu Agematsu and Akifumi Kaneko, the show's main composer and writer respectively. Before this project, Kaneko was the lead game designer on Wild Arms (and also did most of the writing), and the lead writer for Wild Arms 2-4. Symphogear is artistically extremely similar to Wild Arms, so many see it as Kaneko's attempt to get a "proper" Wild Arms anime made. For example, Symphogear uses the same coat of pseudo-mythological sci-fi paint, and of course the show is littered with references, ranging from a self-help book referring to the game's magic system with the colors on its cover in the first season, all the way to The "True" God of Earth/Humanity in the last season looking basically exactly like Rudy would as a Symphogear character. One of the most popular character insert songs uses the same kind of western inspired instrumentation, with a heavy focus on guitars and whistling. It's even a bit of a crackpot theory that the world of Symphogear is somehow a future of Filgaia or its inhabitants, and that the relics used to power the titular power armor are actually ARMs. Hell, *even in a meta sense*, the second season is considered the best narratively, and the show ended after 5 seasons! This is a rabbit hole that goes deep, but you're cordially invited if you want to jump in. Symphogear is an incredible musical ride.

They should remake the first game with modern graphics but have Mother continually follow you about right after the tutorial areas, summoning dementors that attack you and derailing the plot so that it ends after attack on Aldehyde (to be continued). Also, Calamity Jane turns up at the Aldehyde fair because. Also the demons can control time now, and have played the original game so can pre-empt all of the main characters' moves.

Wild Arms is my favorite game to this day. WA2 was good but deserved a better translation, for sure. WA3's only real issue was how slow-paced and frequent the combat was, and how much it took to grind out levels or the best items. WA5 was fine, albeit a bit trite in its story and trying to be the halfway point between the first few games and the abhorrent thing that called itself WA4 (yes, the game calling itself 4 actually was bad). People lost interest by the time 5 came out because its story, its music, and attempt to return to puzzle solving akin to 1-3 were not enough; the damage done by the previous game had been done. Now many of the original developers are making the crowdfunded spiritual successor, Armed Fantasia. All we fans can do now is wait and hope.

Replayed the first Wild Arms earlier this year. Still think I have my well worn original copy somewhere around here. The western/fantasy mashup is still so unique, and there are so many great musical nods to classic spaghetti western soundtracks. Never finished 2 although I need to. Wild Arms 3 was a disappointment and I kind of gave up on the series after that, only coming back for the Alter Code F remake of the first game.

If they market it right they could draw from all of those fan bases & make one great new game.

i really hate it when they make a mediocre or even awful mobile game of a beloved series and take a gatcha failing as reason to not make any new wildarms games

3:00 Filgaia was the name in the English translation. In Japanese, it was Fargaia. 3:10 The picture you show next to the Elw is... not an Elw. That's Cecillia, a human. Misleading imagery there. 3:12 The Crimson Nobels weren't introduced until WA2. 3:13 The Baskar aren't a separate race from humans - Baskar is simply the name of their village in multiple games, but they are still human. 5:40 The U.S. and E.U. releases were not "Ports". A Port is when a game built on one hardware is rewritten to play on a different hardware. Despite being different region codes, the hardware was the same. Get your terminology right. 6:55 The Wild Arms games do NOT "take place in the same universe". Names are recycled, but the actual planets and settings are different for every game. 10:40 Again, the games do NOT "take place in the same universe". Case in point, in WA2 and WA3, Lombardia is a metal dragon. In WA:XF, Lombardia is an interdimensional spacecraft. These are NOT the same universe!

I feel like media vision just went in a different direction. I mean they made the only good Wizard of Oz game, a very accessible JRPG on DS no less. Nowadays they seem to have their hands in Valkyria Chronicles, the recent Shining games, and my favorite the Digimon Cyber Sleuth series. I could see them going back to Wild Arms if Sony ponied up the money for it.

Ff7 getting a remake and sony never giving us a new legend of dragoon despite people begging for one since 2000 is wild to me.

I think it's best that Wild Arms ended on the note that it did. Lately, there's been a whole push of nostalgia on old IPs and too many radical changes that cater to new fans rather than old ones. We still have the old games to play and fondly remember by, and that should be enough. And if there's someone that really wants a new Wild Arms experience, they can make a whole new IP inspired by it and garner interest that way, without compromising a series that has gently been forgotten. I love playing Wild Arms (beat acF and 3, working towards the rest) but I want to keep those memories pure if possible.

WA has always been one of those series that I’ve always admired from afar but never gave a shot. If they really did make a new game, I’d give it a shot. And if I could actually purchase stuff on my Vita (server issues or somethin), I’d look into the PSP one cause that looks like fun, as I’m a big fan of spin-off titles like FFT

Worth noting that 2 and alter code didn’t reach the U.K., and 4 & 5 seemed to have a limited release that didn’t get much attention or marketing c’: I’m still wanting to play alter code
