My Great-Great Grandmother was onboard the Titanic. She booked in 3rd Class and booked so late she wasn’t even on the manifest. Her cabin was oddly shaped and she didn’t even feel the impact. When a steward knocked on her door, she didn’t even know how to put the lifevest on and took it with her to the lounge where she sat and sat and got the assistance of some man. She was one of the first to arrive and saw it quickly fill with others. Realising it was becoming serious, she went up the staircase and out onto the stern and climbed a ladder up to the boat deck, before being helped into Lifeboat 14 and watched in horror as men tried to board and were halted. After being lowered, she said nothing and could only be grateful she was in the lifeboat and was transferred to Lifeboat 10 before being saved. After the sinking, she returned to Europe and didn’t once blame those from the crew or the wealthy for the incident

The real tragedy of the third class passengers is that not all of them spoke great English, so they were a little out of the loop on what was happening and when, and they still tried to save their belongings in their suitcases as it was all the possessions they had to start their new life in America. Charles Joughin, the chief baker on the Titanic, spent two hours in the water until he got on Collapsible B. He drank large portions of brandy, acting like an anti-freezing, and kept his hair dry after the Titanic sank. This saved his life, despite his legs and feet getting swollen.

He didn’t really get onto Collapsible B. He swam to it, but there was no room for him on it so those men who were on it helped pull him part way out of the water for a little while and eventually he decided to swim away and later made it into another lifeboat.

If one's body is gradually becoming colder due to a variety of reasons, that is called hypothermia. The key in the condition we commonly call hypothermia is it happens gradually. However, when one jumps in cold water, they would most likely experience hypothermic shock which is rather different - one thing which happens is muscle contraction, the lungs become compressed and if you don't immediately die because of that alone what follows is you start breathing rapidly yet shallowly like a dog panting whitout much air reaching your lungs. At this point two thngs can happen - you either swallow water and drawn much quicker or your brain becomes depraved of oxygen. In any event, the last thing you would be capable of doing is shouting and screaming, beingly closely tied to those compressed lungs.

Most of the lifeboats didn't return to the scene of the sinking out of fear of being swamped by swimmers. In hindsight, the saddest aspect of that is that those in the lifeboats actually didn't need to fear being swamped, because the effects of hypothermia meant most of those in the water became unable to move or even shout for help after fifteen minutes.

I commented on some video somewhere, that there is a condition called "crush asphyxia" (or something like that) where you can't move, even to inhale, so you suffocate. It usually happens when someone is caught up in a panicing crowd, and the crush of people around you is so thick that you can't breath. Happens a lot in theater fires, club fires, etc.

I just learned this recently: the reason there weren't enough lifeboats on the Titanic is because back in 1912 they were just little rowboats, they were meant to transport people from a sinking vessel onto a rescue ship, they're not meant to just hold a bunch of people and sit in the ocean. when the titanic hit the iceberg there was a ship that was only 12 miles away, the only reason it didn't show up was because it was so late that they had already turned off their wireless radio system for the night.

They didn't have enough lifeboats because they thought too many (enough for all passengers) made the ship look bad, like covered up the beauty and would 'worry the passengers'. Plus too many would 'ruin the ""fact"" that she was unsinkable'. Oh hindsight. :'( They got in huge trouble for that decision but it mandated enough lifeboats on future ships the world over after the sinking. That deadly mistake and omission would never happen again.

I've been unfortunate enough to have a kayak sink in about 40° water. The pain of that cold water is unreal, and I was only in the water for about 8 minutes, my arms and legs turned a purple-ish blue color and felt like they had knives poking into them. I can only imagine how those people felt.

The one child that died was the result of a serious understanding. Her little brother was taken into a lifeboat by the family’s maid, but the mother and the father didn’t know this. I lost it when one lady with her infant frozen into the sea after drowning, when rose finally gets help. God I can't even fathom how desperate they would have been. And then captain, people who were bravely accepting of their demise💔. I would have died of anxiety of being all alone than die of drowning tbh

I went to the exhibit in Pigeon Forge, TN and the tour guide said that the lifeboats could have filed more people, but they were misusing the seats. The seats could have fit more people if they were sitting back to back, opposed to just a long line of people for each row. So they could have saved more lives possibly.

Considereing many launched not even close to capacity a lot more could have been saved. I suspect they each could have gone a couple hundred pounds beyound official capacity. This certainly would not have come close to saving all but a lot more could have lived. The problem was all of the disorder from the officers and the fact that many just would not get in at first. As the nose began to go under it became more difficult to launch the boats and maintaining control became difficult. The captain cancelled the life boat drill scheduled for early that morning.

After a lot of research I've done on the Titanic, I learned even if they had lifeboats for every passenger there wouldn't have been enough time to load everyone anyway. Also alot of the reason the life boats weren't at full capacity is due to people thinking the ship couldn't sink. Also, they were scared to be lowered into a lifeboat. As the titanic sank a group of men were trying to get a life boat loose from on the top of the captains quarters. When they lowered it the boat flipped upside down and at the same time the water reached the deck. Several men clung to the upside lifeboat and survived the sinking.

Exactly, I think the only thing that could have been don’t differently is that the boats could have gone back and loaded more people. But yeah there wasn’t enough time to load more people than they did. Also hindsight is a wonderful thing, being there in that moment you just try and save as many. No one could avoid the inevitable at that moment which was many we’re going to die. No matter what.

I almost pity the people in the boats more than the people in the water at the time of the sinking... never mind watching the horror show of people dropping overboard and this solid unsinkable ship sinking, but hearing over a thousand people screaming and thrashing around once the ship was gone is unimaginable to me. I'll stop saying people now lol and obviously the ones in the water are the unfortunate souls... imagine being in one of those lifeboats or even worse, being on the Carpathia and coming across this carnage... RIP indeed

Well, you could have unlocked the life hack of being so fat you're naturally buoyant enough to float, in which case having a great white go "yummy!" because you're so fat is a more frightening possibility than drowning. But hypothermia gives you a horrible headache, I don't recommend it.

My great grandmother survived, she was young, and still alive now, She tells me fascinating stories, and tells me how cold and bitter the water was, she was so lucky to have a lifeboat, otherwise, I wouldn’t b here now.

the last (known) living survivor of the Titanic passed in 2009, if your great-grandmother is still alive you could write to the Titanic Historical Society!!

Mm, if this was true your great-grandmother would be pushing 115. You madame, (or sir) are a liar. You are awarded no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

My great grandfather Albert Horswill was a crewmen on Titanic. He was ordered into lifeboat one by Officer Murdoch along with 6 other crewmen and 5 first class passengers. Sir Cosmo and Lucy Duff Gordon were accused by the press of bribing the crewmen on lifeboat one to avoid returning to the wreck to look for passengers. This was a lie, it was just a kind gesture to compensate the crewmen for lost wages.
