Great tasting Agnese. Here in Australia as you are aware Riesling develops very strong petrol notes as they age, but I’ve had many that were 10-12 years old. I had a Zind Humbrect that was nearly 15 years old in a Paris restaurant and it was still in good condition.
@NoSedimentАй бұрын
Yes, it is kerosine that will sometimes take me to Australia or if there is some r/s -> New Zealand! 😁 I think Alsace is a region we should discover more - such an interesting winemaking area, with very unique wines’ 🍾
@mickeylee2624Ай бұрын
How lovely! I was curious specifically about Riesling's progression, but I haven't had an opportunity to try any aged... partly because my dining companion and I enjoy fresh style and partly because we can't keep them stocked enough in our limited space. 🤣😂 My vote would for your next vertical tasting would be Gruner Veltliner or Unoaked Chardonnay (i.e. Diatom) among white wines and Carmenere (or Carmenere-dominated blends) or a Merlot-dominant Right Banker (St. Emilion GCC/PCC or Pomerol) among the reds.
@NoSedimentАй бұрын
I would definitely love the idea of Gruner, even though it is very specific, but that grape can age. I would also love Chardonnay. Right Bank would probably clear out my bank account. 😂😂😂
@mickeylee2624Ай бұрын
@@NoSediment, I suggested GV because I personally am about to embark on exploring it. As for the Right Bank, I figure you would have make a better choice for the wines and greater access to the multi-vintages than us. ;-)

It really comes down to what you want. There are good reasons to drink for all three of them! I also trust in good producers who would not sell a wine that’s not ready. And as you say: you cannot go back once it’s too late. But if you think it might have been too early, just buy another bottle. Or two. Or a case. 😀
@NoSedimentАй бұрын
Good advice, and let’s hope we all have the financial means to do so. I have opened few wines, that were still too young, but unfortunately I cannot afford them again. And for sure not several bottles.

You don’t seem old enough to have purchased the 2006 on release 😮😉. I tend to agree with you, I’d prefer the middle ground or younger. It’s academic, though, I don’t buy aged wines for a couple reasons, and I don’t have cellar capacity to age wines myself for more than five years or so. This is one of your best and most entertaining and informative videos. Thanks so much! 🌺🙏❤️ In answer to your question: pinot noir. I find more division on the ageability (in general) of this wine. I generally drink the PNs I buy (mostly Oregon and California) within 3years of release, believing that age is unlikely to improve them. Cheers!

I love vertical tastings and I would hope you do a Bordeaux vertical over 15-20 years (each 4-5 years), or a Champagne one. I have done a few vertical tastings and I have noticed some wines feel more watery and more diluted approaching the 10 years. (cheaper wines less than $20). Considering your long career and experience I would love your input as regarding the body weight and concentration of an aged wine in comparison to a recent vintage.
@NoSedimentАй бұрын
Bordeaux actually makes a lot of sense, if there is one winemaking region that can truly age magnificently- it must be Bordeaux. Champagne also sounds really great, just slightly harder to find examples in the market if You don’t have the wines already in Your cellar. Thank You for Your comment and the tips! 🍷

Fabulous Presentation. What variety next? your choice. I have poured more wines down the sink than I care to recall. Too few really understand the rudiments of aging wines. In my experiences the wines are either kept too long - or - kept inappropriately. FWIW - I don't drink white wines. I've had Shiraz for 20 years and Shiraz that maxed out at 7 - all Australian.

for me personally, aging wine means more character. While the wine ages, I also age and with it my preference. 35 years ago I was not a uge fan of Iron Maiden, but in the here and now I absolutely am. I mean to indicate that over time the product changes and the taste changes with it... my daughter prefers a younger wine, while I personally prefer a more dated wine. My conclusion is that the wine develops and our personal preferences develop along with it. For me it makes it hard to explain what happens to the wine in the whole perspective.... Or am I missing something?

@seminky5341Ай бұрын
I didnt know smaller format aged faster @@NoSediment
@ruud24kАй бұрын
@@seminky5341 Corks for half, full and magnum bottle are the same size. So they all let the same amount of oxygen through. But with less wine in the bottle there is more oxygen per ml wine available. Therefore half bottle ages a bit faster and a magnum ages a bit slower. That's the theory. I don't really have a grasp on what that effectively means in practice. Is it twice as fast for a half bottle in general then?
@NoSedimentАй бұрын
Yes, I think I made a video on this. 🍷
@NoSedimentАй бұрын
Absolutely correct. I wouldn’t go as far as to say that it ages twice as fast, but definitely faster. Sometimes, for young wines it is even better to choose smaller formats. I remember, my previous boss would prefer demi-champagne bottles when they just arrived from the winery, over regular sizes. 🥂

there is aging wines for them to reach their optimum form, something like 3-10 years and there are fetish aging which is absolute useless. if you made a wine and it needs 40 years to show its perfect form, you might want to change things in the vineyard. edit: and I dont get why should I be excited with the fact that 18 year old white wine still shows signs of life? who cares?😅 excellent video as usual, touching very interesting topics from very honest angles…

In my unfortunately limited experience quality dry Riesling is best about 10-15 years after the harvest, after that it usually gets a bit iffy and ”interesting”. The sweet and semisweet ones can age well for many more years.
@QualeQualesonАй бұрын
I do believe that the topic (better or not with age) is far too complex to produce a definitive answer, so why look for one. We humans have a nasty tendency to turn our limited cognitive capacity into a matter of ideology. The idea isn't to produce truth, but simply to establish ones personal convictions or agendas as truth for others. In other words; it's not about facts, it's about power. "The wine is old enough to order its own wine" Come on now 😏😄 Is that sommelier humour? PS: I appreciate the verticals. It gives me a shortcut to some insight. Do some that are known for improving with age, like something French maybe, IF you can afford it. That's a big if. EDIT oh and PPS: The Norwegian Wine Monopoly operates with three categories for aging. It's A: "Ready to drink, not suitable for storage". B: "Ready to drink but can also be stored" and C: "Gets better with storage." I thought maybe you'd find that interesting.
@NoSedimentАй бұрын
I think those descriptors were first thought me in WSET, but in all honesty, I as I said- each wine will have their own people who prefer it that way. Older, younger, so who we are to judge? 😅
