I know I would like it if you spent just a little more time on the slow mo shots, though you think "nothing interesting" happened during the LN2 explosion of the dynamite, you forget that watching an explosion in slow mo is by itself interesting. The pressure waves and carnage created by the dynamite is why I came to watch, to see what would happen. You don't have to analyze it, but I would have liked to see more of the mono chrome footage, rather than breezing over it.

Could you use "decibel-meter" to measure loudness difference between cold/normal explosive?
@tz8785
@tz8785 4 жыл бұрын
It would have to be a decibel meters fast enough to measure such a short noise.
@donlitos
@donlitos 2 жыл бұрын
@@tz8785 Wrong. Any sound from the blast waves will travel to the decibel meter at approximately 761.2 mph (1,225 km/h) at 59 degrees Fahrenheit (15 degrees Celsius) - slightly faster if warmer, slightly slower if colder - because gas molecules move slower or faster depending on ambient temperature of the medium though which they are traveling. The amplitude of the wave is what determines louder or quieter not speed or temperature. Sound intensity is measured in Watts per meters squared Zima you were right.
@tz8785
@tz8785 2 жыл бұрын
@@donlitos You are not even wrong - in the Paulian sense. In other words, you are missing my point entirely. To measure a short bang as the exploding stuff in the press produces, the sensor measuring the volume needs to measure a very brief peak. Hence the need for a fast (reacting) sensor like those for accurately measuring how loud guns are, normal decibel-meters are meant for completely different (less transient) sounds and might not give particularly accurate results. This is just about entirely unrelated to the speed of sound.
@darikmatters8866
@darikmatters8866 4 жыл бұрын
The blasting cap side by side tells it all.. The warm cap has a distinct and visible shock wave and the frozen sample does not.. The speed of the reaction is affected. The frozen sample"s propagation doesn't even reach the speed of sound. It appears to be the same on the larger sample and the reaction looks incomplete based on the differences in the gas cloud but that could just be the lighting

@tippyc2
@tippyc2 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not surprised it blew up cold. I would expect a well engineered detonator to have enough margin in the activation energy to overcome the low temperature. I think the darker smoke indicates incomplete reaction of the explosive. Despite blowing up, it might be reacting slower or not achieving quite as high of temperature, so its not reacting all the chemical components and intermediate products.
@sjvche7675

I think the key is the speed of freezing, freezing weather will freeze it slowly allowing the nitro. to separate from the clay, and become unstable.
@markfergerson2145
@markfergerson2145 4 жыл бұрын
This is solid science- I don't know of any "real" research into the behavior of explosives at extreme cold temperatures. I may have to find a way to work this into a science fiction story that cites the "pioneering scientific work" by you guys. Also, dynamite works best against solid things that don't want to move out of the way. Have you frozen it into a large block of ice? That would make a beautiful instant snowstorm!
