Also, not to be condescending but technology and human manipulation have come a llloooonnngggg way from the 80s, people have learned and have been taught from big time people to create these things (games, movies, etc) to make us feel the way we do in the moment of said playthrough. I admit I balled at some points in RDR2 just because it was SO REAL at times. But at the same time. It's fiction and life is a hell of a lot more complicated than that, even in those times (1800s early 1900s.)

From what I've seen, if you avoid going to Thomas Downs to attempt to collect his debt, eventually you get to the point where the only mission available to do in order to progress father in the game is to go to Thomas Downs and attempt to collect his debt.

In order to avoid this, the mission must be ignored and never completed. Doing this will lock the Van der Linde gang in Horseshoe Overlook and stall story progression, preventing the player from completing any further story missions and locking out the entire region of New Austin in addition to any side missions that rely on story progression.

I had that encounter, when in my killing spree i didn't do main mission of characters for a month, trying to enjoy the discovery of the map and Dutch told me that. I also got that cutscene with strauss and there's were i ended up doing the main mission of downes. That's how they push you and in my opinion i think strauss is the villain of the story like wtf

I was spoiled on what happens at the Downes ranch, so I put it off as long as I could; but the game eventually gave me the cut scene and “go to Downes” instruction at the bottom with the ping sound, and again, and again, until I gave in to the inevitable (no more backtracking to a save to see if there was some other mission I could divert to for a while longer). During the ride the music was so eerily heartbreaking, so sad, with such a sense of inevitability, that I was pretty much ready to weep the whole slow ride there, then grew resigned, then let fate happen as it has to happen with Arthur being his strongarm self. It was intensely moving and tragic by that point-high storytelling. I don’t think it would have affected me as much if 1) I’d heard the same music score just riding to Downes earlier on, or 2) if I had been forced there via a cut scene instead of “choosing’’ to accept it. I’m late to playing the game, so keep getting spoiled, but have armed myself with a big fur-lined coat of denial on everything else.

Thumbs up. It's still a wonderful story, regardless of the end, in fact the end is the crowning jewel. Not knowing beforehand, you got that from the TB infection (before even knowing it was TB narratively), which is unfortunate. The entire emotional payoff is in the end of Arthur, the first time you go through it. Even with someone like me, who knew something happened the second some dude coughed blood right into his mouth and on his face, the extent isn't presented until the diagnosis, and even then, hope remained. The emotional impact of the inevitable end, when you are still hoping something is going to come up, is a piece of pure genius. Arthur had to die, that much is undisputable, but the TB helps accentuate the arc of his redemption in a way that is so very impactful. He was a "good man" from the start, but the TB forced him to accept it as his nature, to see how he was corrupted by guiding figures he believes he owes a debt to and that while he is forced to pay off that debt, he will attempt to alleviate the suffering of the common man as he comes across it. Every other playthrough though, while I still loved the character, that attachment didn't cloud my judgment to the fact that he is a career criminal drowning in blood. He has killed so many people, he cannot even keep count. He deserves to die and your only goal, as a player, is to make sure you feel good about how much he has helped improve the lives of the people around him before that happens, to feel a sense of justified redemption on your dime, or just go about having fun however you want, because it doesn't matter and is just for entertainment. That high storytelling you are talking about, it's called foreshadowing, and it's impact is only a factor of having already experienced the impactful moments it foreshadows. While not necessarily lazy, flashback forms of foreshadowing (starting a story with the death of the character, then going back in time to show how it happened and having an impactful moment of "truth", for example) are less propped up by the result, than the action that defines the result. In rdr2, the action defining the result is beating up a dude and having him cough up blood into your mouth and on your face, which, while certainly something of note to an imbiber of entertainment (this is very obvious foreshadowing), it is not climactic. We still do not know if this has any impact (it's a story and even more so, a video game), but we can hold an inkling of dread in our hearts. The result, however, when it finally comes is one of the best moments of video game story telling, possibly the best. Everyone who has played this game to the end, loves Arthur and does not want him to die and anyone who thinks about it a bit, after grieving the loss of a pixelated, fictional character, understands that he had to die, because Arthur, despite the many qualities we may ascribe to him as our in game avatar, with whom we've spent tens to hundreds of hours, is a mass murdering criminal who deserves death and for whom there is no in life redemption. He finally gains redemption through his death, the final act of betterment to alleviate suffering, him no longer able to inflict it on others, whether by volition or forced.

The game just forced me to go to downes after the Mary linton letter. When I got there, I tried shooting downes, but he didn’t die. So I kept running away from him and shooting anyone I found on the street, so the authorities would come and the mission fails. Eventually, in the “mission failed” menu, the option to cancel the mission appears and you are no longer forced to visit downes.

If you’re riding the opposite direction when you reed the letter there pop up the mission faild screen. Then you press restart at checkpoint. You’ll respawn directly at the farm just ride again the opposite direction after the mission failed screen pop up you can exit the mission. Thank me later. (Auto save must be turned on)

Tuberculosis doesn't just exist outside of a human host or develop naturally through a process of compromised immune response, it travels from one host to another and infects the new host with the bacteria. In order for Arthur to contract tuberculosis, he has to have been in close contact with another human who had tuberculosis. This is why the tuberculosis vaccine is so important when travelling to a country that has tuberculosis and why countries that don't have tuberculosis are well advised to keep track of any signs of tuberculosis in their populations, in order to cure it through antibiotics before it spreads too widely, or, if we were playing a video game as a civilization planner, why "forcing" (within the framework of forcing pixels for best game results) your population to be inoculated against TB would be so important. Incidentally, the reasons why tracking TB and inoculating against it are so important, do not apply to the most recent issue we had medically, just to go off on a tangent. The difference in results from tracking a curable and entirely inoculable infection, to those of tracking an incurable and ultimately indefensible (the variables involved in complete inoculation are too multi varied to determine) are night and day. The goal of tracking for a benign, rapid mutation infection for which only the more severe symptoms can be somewhat protected against is not medical, at least not within easy memory of the event that classified the disease as a major threat to humanity, the response to which was exaggerated and unwarranted. The medical community does not benefit from the statistical tracking of the illness, only in observing the mutations as they come up, while not reporting on them unless they present a risk factor such as an increased mortality rate, which would make no sense in a rapid mutation, endemic, benign infection in the first place. It's probably the coolest video game ever made. There is a time I was free roaming and then decided to camp. When I woke up, it opened with a cut scene of about 3 scary dirty men waking me up in the middle of the dead night and warning me never to camp there again. They declared that they would shoot me the next time they saw me. I have played the game about 5 times more and I have never encountered that cut scene again. 🤔

When strauss ask you to go, you go in the horse in emerald ranch direction, after you cross the train walk, you will losse the mission, then you should choose "restart the mission". After that you should appear out of the thomas ranch, then you kill them and you will loose the kission again, but this time you will have the option to cancel the mission, the you can go with mary. The thomas mission will be still appearing but we can continue with other missions. When you rescue the mary's brother you will hear a very beautifull music ambient while you are walking to valentine. I never visited the Downes family before the husband/father dies. The first time I visited was after his death. I am fairly certain of this! However, Arthur still gets ill after Chapter 5 - so he must have gotten it elsewhere - maybe when he was being beaten up in Gaurma.

It's not secret, it's dumb. It forces you to do a mission a certain way without any good reason besides, oh he has to get sick to learn anything. They should let you be able to try to collect some debt without beating the man.

If you are gonna play the story you have to visit if you want to progress through the chapters. It's part of the story...you'll be bored out your mind if you avoid completing chapters. Side missions and side people come along as your progress through the game, you'll be stuck in chapter 2 if you don't visit Downes ranch. There's nothing you can do to stop Arthur from dying unless you just don't complete story missions. I even tried killing Downes while he was in valentine. He can't die until he dies...you can't kill anyone that goes along with the story. Or else what would be the point of the story? Arthur dies...nothing you can do about it. Now stop making these videos...move on.

Necro There is a lot of game in Chapter 2, which is when I like to do most of it, while Arthur is healthy. Most of the game outside of the missions can be done in chapter 2, most notably the biggest part, hunting, which, while it can't be finished, can be damn near close. You can also get rich on quite a few gold bars, with at least 3 treasure maps, plus the 6 free roam, no map bars available at the start of chapter 2 before you've done anything else in the chapter. Not to mention the various challenges that can be completed. "You'll be bored..." is a bit of an overstatement. If you enjoy the gameplay and what is involved in adding the pages to the story that complete a 100%, chapter two represents the largest portion of your game, unless you are playing for the first time, come in blind and experience open world games without wanting to explore the world as early as you can, which is a lot of factors to "impose" upon a player who would buy this game to begin with

I didn't visit Thomas Downes. Arthur had a great life outlawing all over the countryside, dropping in to see his previous running buddies at Horseshoe Overlook to break balls, then eventually retired to a tenured position at table 3 in Smithfield's Saloon.

AND even though you can get a fishing rod, you CAN'T get a lure to fish correctly, because it's after this part of game. When you go to camp, once they talk to you that's pretty much forced.

I had a visit from Charles if I remember well, while I was away from camp. He just came on horseback and said something like "Hey Arthur when are you going to come back to camp ? We need your help and we need money, I think Strauss asked about you" or something like that.

the way i did it i pushed it off as long as possible then i get notified that mr downes died. herr strauss came up to me and tell me. then after i did the bank robbery in valentine the game forced me to go their ranch. when i get their they are emptying out the house and she gives you the money.

Interestingly enough, on my first playthrough of the game, I got the "secret" cutscene after the letter from mary just because I'd been exploring and hunting for too long, and I also didn't want to go beat up a sick man so I subconciously avoided it for long enough for the game to force me into it

My first playthrough, I did the mission pretty much as the game intends you to do it, aka as soon as it's open. My 2nd playthrough, I avoided Strauss all the way up past chapter 2, and well into chapter 3 until randomly, he walks past me and says something along the lines of "Hey, you know that Debtor I told you about? Thomas Downes? Turns out he's dead. I still need you to collect the debt from his wife however." So now, the game will always behave as if you went and beat up Downes, even if you never did. If you skip it long enough, you'll get the prompt to go see Mrs Downes after the bank robbery mission in Valentine in Chapter 3. When you see her, she'll treat you as if you had already been there and beat up her husband like how the canon story arch of the game is supposed to go. I guess they must have changed that in one of the many updates the game has gotten since it came out. I heard that originally, the game forced you to do the normal strauss mission and you'd just keep getting mission fails if you didn't. That doesn't happen anymore looks like.

From what I've read, most people who are exposed to TB don't actually get it and most who do often get a inactive form of it( which can for some become active at anytime). Back then people believed TB to be inherited from parents.
