I worked on a cruise ship as a youth staff…around dusk saw two teenagers doing handstands off the railing of the top track level and ran over to them to stop them. One guy told me “what? it’s just water if I fall.” I told him you could break bones this far up and 2nd this ship can’t just stop to find you and what if it circles the wrong way and you get crushed or sucked under?? They look stunned. Anyway, I marched these kids to my manager. He called their parents and his dad cried when he found out and confronted his kid. I feel happy to know I possibly stopped a tragedy from happening that night.

My boyfriend and I went to Costa Rica. They told us not to leave the resort unless we were with a guide, but I let my boyfriend convince me it would be ok to take a taxi to this small town not far away. Then I got this feeling in my gut that told me do not get one a boat with a stranger from a small village in a foreign country. This guy could have been a felon for murder who fled the US and was on the run. I honestly believe if we had gone we wouldn't have returned. So then we started walking around and looking at souvenirs and we were being followed by several shady looking people. This town was really small, it had one road with small shacks and I'm sure no policing. The locals looked like they were pissed at us. We got the hell out of there pretty fast. My dummy boyfriend was totally clueless. Needless to say, it was over with him before the vacation even ended.

I once gave a ride to the captain of a very large cruise ship. He is on that ship for 6 - 9 months each year, touring the Caribbean and South-east Asia. He said on average 1 - 2 people go missing on each tour. Normally they notice when someone repeatedly does not show up for meals, then they go looking for him. Sometimes they find a s**cide note in the cabin, sometimes not. THEY DON'T EVEN LOOK FOR THEM ! Because he said the ocean is too vast, the chances of finding a person are so slim it's not worth it. There was a moment of silence in the car when he said that. I assume / I hope that they still stop when there are witnesses who see the person jump overboard. But when they find out days later that a person is gone, it's probably too late anyway.

I mean sailing ships can get seriously damaged just being dragged along the sides of a large ship so needless to say that spells some nasty trauma for a human body. My friend, drunk and stupid, got into an argument with his girlfriend. We've never got a straight answer about how he ended up overboard but her story was that he climbed over the railing and was trying to climb up or down to the next railing when he fell. This is part of the reason I’ve never been on a cruise. Because people that are involved in any sort of maritime disasters are completely defenseless. We as humans have no defense to being out in the ocean. We can freeze, drown, dehydrate, starve, become victim to sea animals, etc. and there’s nothing we can do. I’d rather take my chances being stuck in the middle of the Amazon jungle because at least there’s things I can do to try and preserve my life. If you ever find yourself stuck in the ocean your only option is pray someone finds you soon. Which usually doesn’t happen. Especially if you get lost at night you can forget being found. It’s over..

I was on a cruise where a passenger jumped off from on of the higher decks, the thing is they decided to put on a life jacket before jumping. Because of the life jacket the impact with the water was soo severe they actually died. The ship was docked at one of our ports of call and while we were having breakfast ready to go off on the island, we could see the body floating around in the water beside the ship. They ended up lowering one of the dinghies to go pick up the body and was stored in the ship’s morgue until returning to the home port in Miami. I heard rumours on board that this man was fighting with his wife all trip and finally got into a serious fight with his wife and threatened to jump overboard and he actually did it. I don’t know if thats 100% true because they tried to cover it up as much as possible to avoid ruining other passengers trips, but many passengers claimed to have seen this couple having some pretty nasty arguments all around the ship *Another story* I know a young family that went on a cruise. A 3 year old child, the parents and also the grandfather. The parents went off to do something and left the child in the care of the grandfather. The grandfather took the child to the top deck to watch the ship sail away 16 decks up. The child was apparently complaining they couldn’t see anything and the grandfather lifted her up and held her on the railing. I don’t know what happened exactly but the child fell off the railing and all the way down into the water. The grandfather instantly went into a panic and told the workers of the ship and shortly they had the ship stopped. And they started looking around the ship for the little girl. Unfortunately when they found her body she was not alive. I can’t imagine what that grandfather felt after making that serious of a mistake, accidentally killing your own kids child. I have heard a few other stories but these were the most serious ones. The other stories I heard the people survived. But just soo you know jumping off the ship is not only seriously dangerous and stupid, if you survive or they manage to find you it will also get you arrested, charged and banned from any future cruises

@@Makado14 I am sure it sounds kind of funny eating breakfast while watching some body floating around, but was a crazy experience. It’s very rare for something like this to happen. I have been on 26 cruises and it only happened on one. Every other cruise had zero issues

It doesn’t take an hour or more to slow down a big cruise ship. After being alerted to man overboard the ship will enter into a figure of 8 manoeuvre, I would hazard a guess that 10 minutes max the ship would be back in its original position. They are highly manoeuvrable and have GPS tracking. The main issue would be when someone jumps and it’s not seen or reported. Please use facts when trying to report factually.

They could solve this easily by giving everyone a tracker bracelet and having a 24/7 live system which triggers an automatic red alert to a dedicated onboard emergency response team if anyones tracker should happen to stray more than 100 metres from the ships geometric footprint. The most obvious two methods of rescue would include a small contingent of helicopters kitted out with buoyancy aids so that the pilot and his team can set down in close proximity to the stranded casualty, alternatively the cruise ship could be modified so that it is capable of quickly deploying several high speed dedicated rescue seafaring vessels in order to quickly recover and return the stricken casualty back onboard the main ship. In order to do this some specialised bays would need to be designed into the cruise ship to both quickly and easily deploy and re-integrate the small rescue vessels as effortlessly and efficiently as possible. The reason this is not already currently in place is twofold, firstly because these instances are uncommonly rare and secondly probably because the cost of such adaptions are considered prohibitive . . . when considering the money that such operators can make annually though, these failsafe rescue programs should already be in place in my opinion.

Or people could just not jump off the ship.. And if someone really wants to do something stupid, you can’t stop them. You’re asking these companies to take a huge hit on their profit margins to increase the likelihood of saving someone that intentionally puts their life at risk. Money can do a lot of things, but it can’t fix stupid.

If I plan on getting wasted on a cruise ship I’m going to wear one of those lifejackets under my shirt that inflates when submerged underwater and have some kind of bright beacon light on a lanyard around my neck. Maybe even a have a backpack with an inflatable life raft and air pump inside. Not taking any chances! Well except for being black out drunk in the middle of the ocean 200 feet in the air on the top deck with a low railing.

I’m 57 and never went on a cruise. Unfortunately, I’m scared of water. Growing up in Mississippi, I often traveled to New Orleans and crossing the bridge was a nightmare for me. Now in Los Angeles, I often go to Santa Monica & Venice just to be near the ocean. But a cruise? Hell no! You can’t missed what you never had as the saying goes. We were poor and I never learned to swim in the 60s and 70s😢.
