the problem with most cases is they are designed for "everyone" with spots to mount 120mm or 140mm fans instead of forcing you to pick one or the other... this causes the re-circulation of air in those front panels because its simply pulling air from the lowest pressure points, which often are those giant gaps designed for flexibility, and you are using preheated air to cool down a system... close of all those gaps so it can only pull in outside air... thats what a "true" positive pressure case is... people like to throw out phrases like "positive pressure" when describing this, but most folks do it wrong, because their positive pressure cases are just trying to throw more fans at the problem rather than using less the correct way, it needs to be a true one-way flow, without ANY ability to re-circulate from that initial entry point, less is more, as long as less is done right... if you don't do it right, yes you will need front fans, bottom fans, and top fans, and hope you get enough fresh air inside... if case manufacturers created different mount plates for each fan size, so there were no gaps and it was truly sealed for one-way air flow without any re-circulation, you would see a lot of the poorly tested cases with restrictive front intakes perform slightly better, still not great because its a restrictive entry point, but it would be enough to shave several degrees off... I should also point out this means the fans will generally run more quiet because they are spinning slower because the inside is cooler...

Corsair 500D has the versetile mounting you discribe but with the air filter flat against the fans and air openings making it actually more restrictive to re-circulate hot system air. I assume most case manefactureres take these things into consideration already and if not black duct tape sometime is the answer.

I make my own case fillers. If you take a piece of paper and mark it over the whole area you want to cover, then laminate it and cut it out, you can place it around the 120mm fan to block the 140mm gaps. I've tried a top to side flow system and its rather good. Cut holes in lower part of the side panel for intake and fans on front, back and top draw out. It's negative pressure, but that doesn't matter as it's negligible and I've sealed any gaps with cheap sealant. It's a second hand cheap case and I don't care about aesthetics. I'm using a top down CPU cooler though

To compliment this I would like to see a return to full frame fans. The round frame fans are leaky as all hell, especially if you slap them on rads.

I've tried to reverse the airflow on my S340 Elite couple months ago and I can tell you that, if you're watercooling, it changes a lot, as not only I got better temps on CPU and GPU, but also on other components like RAM and the VRM

@@DutchDinosaur Hi, sorry if I'm replying a year later, anyways, since I commented I changed quite a few things in my pc and I'm not looking to achieve the best performance anymore, I just need a reliable machine for work (which is totally overkill for what I do lol), so I can't really tell you how it worked out as I have a typical airflow config now

@@feelingtech2233 I had been using the referse airflow for a pretty long time, I recently swapped the airflow back to normal and I'm actually getting over 10 degrees cooler on the cpu now. And the rest of my components are still close to the same temps

I'd be curious how these graphs change with a topflow CPU cooler such as the Wraith Prism. There are also simple magnetic dust filters you can buy for cheap to mitigate rear dust intake.

Similar case design here.. I did 2x120 intakes, 1 120 in the rear exhausting and 1-120 at the top rear exhausting. Installed the 2x120s inside the front of the case, removed the front panel and taped all the holes and gaps so air wouldn't be pulled from inside the case. My intent was to gain direct fresh air from outside the case only. It helps quite a bit! see the large gap above your front fan? yeah, trying to do intake with limited airflow, it'll pull air from inside the case and throw it back into the case like an eddy. Taping the front of the case all around the fans and any gaps behind the front panel makes a good 3-5* difference. Went from 80* down to 75* while benchmarking. Cheers!

Interesting video thank you. I have a Antec Nine Hundred case slightly modded with an extra 3rd front case fan where the blu-ray drives used to sit. I also made the CPU and GPU have their own chambers by sectioning them off so each has their own chamber in the case. I vented the GPU out the side of the case which worked a lot better than i was expecting because under load there is a lot of warm air coming out of that vent. Since there is a 200mm top case fan which can move a lot of air by itself I reversed the back case fan to blow into the case . So I have the 3 front fans and the back case fan blowing into the case set on medium speed setting. The top 200mm is also set to medium. My system used to run warmer before doing this but now everything is a lot cooler temps really dropped every where. The only warm spot is the side vent for the graphics card I was even surprised how cool the psu was after this.Under full system load the air coming from it is nice and cool. Idle temps on CPU now sit about 1-2c above room temp load temp hover around 45-64c gaming and this is with a i7 2600K@5.0-5.1GHz on air cooling. Bsfore the changes the same system had my cpu at 56-76c gaming idles were about 6-8c over room temp. I have not done testing like they do here I just monitor the temps sometimes while gaming. I'm sure if I was to run the prime or Aida 64 stress tests my cpu would heat up a lot more,but that brings up a good point if my system never gets hot while I daily drive it and hardcore game on it then why would I give a crap how warm it gets in those programs which are made to juice up your systems and bake them. For testing if my OC is stable I run CPUZ stress test for about 2 hours as well as cinebench at the same time if it makes it through this stable I know it is going to be game and daily driver stable.

I guess I'm too old for this. Around ten years ago,I used to play with various configuration of 80mm case fans. For TLDR people, I found that you can get away without an intake fan with just exhausts at highest possible mounts like the rear and top mounts. If your exhaust is through the small vents, it just returns some hot air back to the case.

Using the rear vent for intake is way underrated and underutilized. If you have a blower-style GPU, then it makes sense to avoid intaking warm air from the back of your case. But if you don't, intaking fresh air straight to a CPU air cooler is very effective. But you shouldn't exhaust thru the front, you can intake from the rear and front and exhaust out the top either passively or actively.

Sticking an 80mm fan under the GPU helps a lot. Mine is set to exhaust, giving the you dedicated exhaust fan to pull that hot air out that normally gets trapped between the GPU and PSU shroud. This is in an H500P with the GN front panel mesh mod. That little 80mm fan removes a ton of hot air. I went with a BeQueit fan, so despite being 80mm it adds no fan noise to the system. Only ever hear my GPU and AiO fans.

my in fan config in the Corsair 900D is 3 Corsair maglev in the front for intake and For exhaust 1 NZXT aer 140mm in the back and the top 4 NZXT aer 120mm before the 480 rad and 4 Vardar behind the rad. My idea for the rad that the Vardar's will provide the static pressure and the NZXT Aer will look awesome. And all fans are balanced in a way that you will have a natural or positive Pressure inside the case.

As an HVAC tech and someone who has a degree in thermodynamics, this is right up my alley. It all has to do with your GFX card cooling. If you have a blower style cooler do NOT do this as you will be sucking in hot air and that won't cool your CPU as well as you would be sucking in air from the front air. The more air flow and exhaust the better it's going to cool off your card. Reserving your air flow is going to mostly kill off your air intake/exhaust to the card itself which is going to result in higher GPU temps. I would also recomned If you have a CPU like this one in the video I would recommend a blower style as it more heat efficient to direct the heat out of your case.

for both CPU and GPU cooling you want the hot exhaust to have the shortest path out of the case. basically dont have hot air dumping into the case because case air is what the GPU cooler breathes in. since the GPU cooler is closer to the CPU than the case front, you will not be able to extract all that hot air before the GPU breathes it in. the best use of the rear fan is to get the hot CPU exhaust out of the case as fast as possible. GPU coolers have already been doing this for years with the dual slot configuration. you can improve the CPU situation by making sure the rear exhaust can at least match the CPU fan throughput, which unfortunately not possible for many cheap cases (1500 rpm 140mm CPU fan blowing onto 600 RPM 120mm rear exhaust fan) you should not do a rear intake for CPU unless you have a dedicated tunnel out the front (or top). or if you have a method to let the GPU also have rear intake (not possible). there's also the issue of dust accumulation. you want dust filters at all intake positions, but case manufacturers these days are usually not providing filters at the rear positions.

What a lot of people don't understand is AIO coolers. They are designed to push cold air from the outside to the inside of the case letting cold air pass through the radiator rather than hot air inside the case pass through it making a big difference in temperatures. I did this test with an H60 push pull configuration and it was 6c cooler letting the air push in from the outside.

Yep, this was more popular / heard of when huge hard drive cages were welded to the front interior of the case. You couldn't get the front intake fan to push air all the way through the cages up to the CPU cooler. Its smarter to put the CPU cooler fan in a push config on the other side, instead of pull like you have there. This way the air will enter the CPU cooler, warm up and you can exhaust it readily via top exhaust fan. otherwise, the hot air could just linger toward the front of the case. You can even turn around that front original intake fan on the case instead of exhaust to intake, to help push that hot air up to the top and out, where the hot air will naturally want to go anyway. The method overall works real good, you can even get some magnetic dust filters off amazon in 120mm size to cover the new rear intake from dust.

This is why I always use a top exhaust design. I actually have a Nanoxia Deep Silence 1 box with a Sabretooth 990FX that was running hot and kept shutting off totally on its own. I decided to swap out to another motherbord and processor but in the process I found using smoke that my top exhaust fan was installed backwards and was bringing air in, instead of out. I reversed the fan and this resolved the heat process and now, with the new motherboard and processor the PC is running cool and silent as a tomb. Now, perhaps the new MB and processor produces less heat but I'm convinced the corrected top exhaust has been key.

I don’t test, but working with electrical cabinets, I use what I know. I usually put my radiators + fans in front, new air from bottom if possible and exhaust on top and rear. This config just helps the natural convection. If it is not possible to take new air from bottom, then I put my coolers on top, new air from front and rear side for exhaust.

I have the same exact Be Quiet fans model and I thought I mounted them (back 1x120 + front 1x140) in the wrong direction but I see your normal build is with be quiet logo to the front for intake. I used anti-vibration fittings and I can hear some subtle whistle so I thought it could be some air turbulence. Sorry if I missed something but english is not my main language and this was the first time I replaced fans in my case.

I use my front and rear fans as intake and have to fans at the top of my case for exhausting heat (case is p400) the great thing about having the rear fan as intake is I feel it sends cool are strait over the vrms which help with cooling those off all of them are pwm and I have the intakes set about 10% higher than the exhaust to create positive pressure and forces more hot air out through the top. to deal with the no dust filter on the rear fan problem I bought a magnetic filter that I just slap on the back of the case, it cant be seen from the sides or front so it takes care of that well enough for me.

Linus did an experiment with interesting results. He made 100% out fans, 100% in fans and standard. Experiment was related to dust but temp results were also interesting with 100% out having really good result.

I love how you’re diving deeper into fan configurations! I’ve got a lian-li PC-Q37 mini itx with a total of 6 fans intaking from the bottom and exhausting through a 280mm aio out the top. My CPU suffers, but my strix gtx 1080 stays at 66c OC @2GHz :) Looking forward to your next vid Dmitri!

I tested this several years ago when I completed my first build and had no idea which way the fans were supposed to face. The throttled gpu was resolved when I used the gtx 550 ti. No heat buildup at all. No performance either. But no heat.

There is a possibility my Corsair carbide 600C may benifit better from reversing the cooling since it is a inverse ATX design, so it would not be recirculating the GPU heat back in, and with the Corsair H100i GTX AIO still blowing down the bottom of the case, if I got a stronger rear fan to pull air in from the back, it may actually help the NB temp of my old AM3+ board (I know, in desperate need if internal upgrade, blame DDR4 pricing)

good timing... I have a Corsair Carbide Air 540 and just put the corsair H150i to exhaust in the front... could only fit one 14cm fan as intake on the top and the back 14cm as intake as well. seems to be working well. My r290 has always been hot idling around 40c but she isn't exceeding 88c during benchmarking and games so i'm happen. Haven't seen my ryzen 2600x exceed 61c yet. Noise isn't bad either.

You should try a blower style graphics card, it may help exhaust some of the hot air as opposed to recirculating it like the open air card you used.

@HardwareCanucks Very interesting test, but don't You think that the "raised GPU temp" simply could be down to the fact that there is NO fan "feeding" the GPU at all in that setup. Wereas in the "normal setup" You have the bottom of the two front fans blowing what little air it can "pull in" directly towards the GPU ?? Best regards.

Would have loved to see the front panel removed results. If you think about it , it the front panel should not be restricting airflow, if it blows in or outwards.

I use a 120mm rad on the back as a push/ pull intake. External air cools the rad that way. I have two slow 140 mm in the front as intake to blow air to GPU. Two 120 mm exhaust out the top and controlled by mother board. Front and back intakes are filtered to reduce dust. My temps are great and system is clean.

Currently using a Fractal Design Define C and air flow seems pretty good. Temps are really good in it using the front as intake. Then again I guess Fractal's slits for air flow are bigger than NZXT's. I would've however considered a mesh front case if Fractal had one when I built mine. The meshify C looks great and performs really well in terms of air flow.

My airflow is fairly unique. My case is a Corsair 600C inverted. I have 3x 120mm fans set to intake on the bottom, 1x 140mm set to exhaust on the back and a Kraken x62 with 4x 140mm fans in a push/pull config set to exhaust on the front.

I have an old case with two 14cm intake SIDE fans, 1 for the cpu and one for the gpu, a 12cm intake at the bottom plus a 12cm exhaust at the rear. Mesh at the top and mesh at the front with no fans. No window, but plenty of airflow. Thats the better combo for me, i try everything with more/less fans in every position. Good luck trying to find new cases with the chance to put side fans...

I tried this experiment once, a few years ago, in a CoolerMaster Storm Scout II, with six 120mm fans (one responsible for the first-gen Corsair H80i's radiator) and got drastically worse GPU results - like reaching throttling temps at idle. I have a few hypotheses as to why, but it might just be too long to write up in a youtube comment. lol

Hey Dmitri, I'm fairly certain that the cause of the higher GPU temps in the reversed position is much more a result of there being no intake near the GPU as opposed to any rebounded air resulting from the front panel. I think if you were to jerry-rig a fan onto either the PSU shroud or the PCI slot covers instead of mounting in the usual rear exhaust spot, you'd see better results on the GPU at the expense of the CPU.

I would like to see a deeper investigation in this matter :) Try with other cases, some with fans on top... And what about AIO cooler or water cooling loops? For example... If you have a radiator on top, does fliping the back fan help your temps? I had this question because I tried once, but never really got to any conclusion... I should help the CPU, but may hurt the GPU... I dont know... Maybe you should try it next time Dimitri :D

Interesting idea. Problem with this is, it requires reversing the CPU cooler (not a good thing visually and practically ) and also, you only have one fan at the rear, not 2. I'll stick with the regular directional flow, my cpu and board, VRM and RAM all stay at very good temps (28-30 idle) in my Eclipse P300, with 2x140mm front fans, 1x140 top and 1x120 rear with an H7.

Two in from the front, two out from the top, one out from the back. That's my fan setup and has been through various cases. I'm currently running in a Corsair C70 vengeance and the temps are pretty good. Delidded my i7 7700K and dropped 40'c from that to 45-50'C. Steve from Gamers nexus said impossible, but that's what i got. GPU runs at 60'c max, and mobo temp is 35'c. So all in all i think i'm doing pretty well!

Meshify C with 280mm radiator front mounted with 120mm fan for rear and 120mm fan on top right above the VRM. Both 120mm are blowing out and the 2 140mm fans are pulling air in. (Mesh > filter > 280mm radiator > 140mm fans) I have my R5 1500X at 4 GHz with 1.440V and still keeping it under 45C under stress test and the GPU (RX 580) with custom fan curve doesn't go over 65C under load. For Idle, CPU 28C and GPU 45C and all fans lower than 1000 RPM making it very quiet. For load the fans speed up to 1400 RPM but I don't notice it at all while gaming. The loudest fans are from the GPU anyways.

I use Cooler Master HAF XB EVO with reversed fans for half a year. The reason to use reversed configuration was that in usual config while gaming behind pc acumulate a lot of heat. During winter it was nice to warm hands from that heat:D

I’ve got a Fractal Define 7 Compact, chimney layout (exhaust fans on the top) seems to work best there for me, perhaps also because I’ve got a RTX 3090 FE which pulls air through the card and exhausts it to the top

I've wondered about this myself- I wonder if putting jury rigging a small fan on the unused pcie slots will help with the gpu temps. You can also buy filter mesh separately buy putting sticking it to some magnetic tape that would take care of that issue although the factory look will be gone alibet only from the back.

This was perfectly timed! I recently got a Corsair H100I V2, but by case didn't have enough clearance in the top to mount the rad and fans, so I ended upt mounting them in the front, and like most cases the front is almost completely covered. Instead of having the fans blow the heat from the rad back in I mounted the rad to the frame and the fans behind it (closest to the board) blowing the air out the front like proposed here. I reversed the rear fan also, but frankensetined the fan cover from my old PC case's PSU. I also mounted 2 fans on the top where I wanted the rad to go. I'm not sure which orientation is best though, pulling air in or out? I can remove the front cover of the case as its TG with some metal design with cutouts to help if it gets toasty.

I still use my cooler master storm sniper that has side, bottom and front intake 200mm and top and rear exhaust 200mm and 120mm with standard air cooler 2x 120mm fans but now I might get the rear fan off it and maybe put it at the top of the front panel for more intake and less "static pressure". But I'm loving the 200mm fans

This was a great idea Dmitry. Bummer, it wasn't as successful as we were hoping. Thankfully, you were able to get CPU temps down but as was stated the GPU didn't improve. Oh, well! Still a great video idea sir.

the gpu will still push air outside the case.. even if little. Add that to the warm air coming from the PSU.. and all that coming back in the case. You could have used a small separation, like a piece of paper to control which air is coming in. I used this when i had a H50 and i could only mount it on the back, and taking air in. This was back in 2010 when cases were more limiting.

I run my computer in reverse with a 420mm rad in front, 2x 200mm fans on top, and a 140 in rear. Only use reverse because if it was normal, anytime the computer goes under load it'd just slam hot air into the case and it heats the GPU a LOT, but the heat produced by the GPU and other components has little effect on the CPU... probably cause the overkill rad :P I use a Thermaltake Core X71, which has removable dust filters (obviously I took out the front for free exhaust, and put it on top to help prevent collected dust going in) and just a grill in front, lack of rear filter for the intake does increase the dust intake, but it's not so bad considering I have a dog, two cats, and live in a desert, so dust is already plentiful.

I reverse the fan at the back only and it lower M.2 temp, VRM temp and CPU temp (CPU AIO mounted on the top exhaust) noticeably. Bought a 140mm fan filter for it and the end result is all the components get cooler and less dust inside the case since it is positive pressure and dust filtered. Been running for 6 months and barely any dust inside.

I find exhaust fans have a much better cooling effect than intake fans just in general. Taking the hot air away is more important than supplying cool air in. It finds it's way in anyway. If you want to test this try comparing with and without intake fans. What intake fans do best is allow you to control where the air comes from and therefore filter out the dust providing you go with positive pressure. Also those side vents provide plenty of air intake even compared to an open mesh front, it's not like you are trying to move vacuum cleaner volumes of air through them.

In my previous build I had an H80 for intake in the back, 2 of 120mm fans for intake at the front and a 200mm for exhaust on the top and my temps were fairly good, I also had a 120mm fan on the side for intake to give fresh air to the graphics card which was an open style gpu

I still prefer the Silverstone FM123 as case fans. They are dead quiet when the temp is low, but when temps go up they can move a LOT of air (gets a little noisy at a 100%, but they never get there). They do have a downside, there is no PWM variant of the model and you have to add a jumper on the fan to make it work without it's controller.

Using a TT Core V31, which I bought about 1 yr ago, because I had an Antec Sonata for silence, however, the previous summers the case got hot, hence the TT case ;) Fans everywhere ;) Front 120 n 140, CM TX3 with push pull fans, a 120 rear fan, and x3 120s along the top... I avg 35 db

MY CASE: First off, there is RAPIDLY DIMINISHING benefits to case fan speed usually. The FURTHER AWAY you get from the heat source the less efficient cooling becomes... for a high-end gaming system the OPTIMAL FAN CONFIGURATION starting with three case fans is this: 1) x1 front intake 2) x1 top exhaust 3) x1 side intake (blow air over graphics card... most cases don't have this or the CPU cooler may interfere physically) *Did you say if you have a set RPM for case and CPU fans?

I have a Rakk Alpa that I'm going to try running upside down. The GPU above with an exhaust fan above it. Power supply on the bottom acting as an exhaust fan. 3x 120mm front intake, 1x rear 120mm and 1x 120mm top/rear intake. All are Arctic pwm pressure fans.

I think reverse air flow would work if your computer is on a desk and you have an air conditioning vent behind your desk that the computer can pull cooler air from. Otherwise, you're just creating a high dust situation. I had a GPU AIO pulling in on the rear 120mm and it made the radiator quite dusty.

In my next build I will have the air going from right to left, pushing cold air directly onto the motherboard and the watercooled CPU. The GPU may get a helpfan blowing out air upwards through the unused extension ports. I'm considering the Termaltake V21 because of the nice magneticmesh dustfilter on the sidepanel and overall modularity.

Can you recommend some cases that do have good front ventilation? My case is ancient yet does have reasonable air-in + dust filters at the front. Seems a shame when aesthetic becomes more important than function. Maybe a round-up video? Budget, mid range & premium?

Should compare a build with all fans set to intake vs all fans set to exhaust. I don't know why, just be interested to watch I guess.

As expected, blowing at a solid panel creates turbulence and the hot air just doesn't exit properly. The CPU temperature difference is very marginal. Currently I have a horizontal case, so air goes in the front, through the CPU heatsink, out the back, straight airflow, no circulation, very effective. The GPU is sucking air through a meshed side panel, again, very effective. 36/39 °C during basic use with inaudible fans. The only thing I hear is the PSU, a 10 year old Corsair TX650 without passive mode with a Noctua NF-P12 inside.

What if you have front mounted aio? I’m curious about having rear, top, and bottom intake. And only front exhaust. I’m guessing it might be better for cpu and gpu as well as dust on aio. I’m using Lian li 205 with 1x rear 120mm 2x top 140mm, 2x bottom 120mm (psu shroud), front 360mm aio and front 2x 180mm fans (works with 360mm aio). ALSO my case is completely open (front panel off, side panels off, no dust filter beside the bottom).

I've been running reverse airflow in my Phanteks Enthoo Evolv for quite some time, because the front was the only place I could fit my 80mm thick 280mm rad, and I didn't want to fill the case with warm air. It works great. The only downside would be the lack of intake air filters, but hey ho. :)

I'm running inverted airflow right now. Radiator at the front is exhaust, and the top and rear fans are intake.

How about adding 2pcs 120mm fans on top, put it exahust and then make it intake . Then can u also add the vertical gpu orientation with same reverse air intake for a more in dep review about this airflow content.

Getting air out in from rear and upward fans will let the CPU cooler work better and get coller air flowing into it ..while the hot air goes out fast from frontal fans that's the best airflow setup you can make for your pc

In the case of the kolink wasn't there some negative pressure created when the fans are reversed (1 in 2 out)? Wouldn't that also affect temps?

Overall, it depends on the case. The Cougar QBX is much cooler with rear intake than it is in any other orientation.

Wouldn't only having one fan for intake reduce supply of fresh air and lead to worst temps as well? Would it have been better to have two intake fans mounted at the top instead of one on the side? then have the CPU cooler mounted so it's blowing down onto the Graphics card been a been a better option? Plus many cases do come with filters for the top so that would also help with dust.

With the reverse flow of fans. The gpu temp being high might be cause there is no fan blowing fresh air to it like in the default fan setup

A huge flaw seen in many temperature comparison videos. Where is the ambient delta value? All those values are meaningless. We don't know the time span between each test. Could have been many hours, even a day or two. Your ambient got hotter(or cooler) as the hours went by with all those stress testing and body work. Unless you do it again measuring your ambient temperature I will pretend I never watched this video, as its conclusion is broken.

So your cpu is SLIGHTLY cooler in reverse, not that it matter cause cpu's don't throttle until TJM, but your gpu is much hotter, which is definitely throttling. Also...Dimitri, the gpu is hotter because it's not getting any fresh air. With the standard layout there is a fan pointed directly at it.

Arc Midi R2: 3 140mm intake (2 front, 1 bottom), 1 top exhaust 200mm + 1 140mm rear exhaust: low(er) rpm, but great airflow.

I'm surprised that with the "flat front" aestethic no manufacturer has thought of using turbines instead of traditional fans like in laptops. This would greatly improve airflow and clearance

ive been thinking about this a lot lately i feel like this would be better on a case like the thermaltake view 37 with out a power supply shroud because you can get a fan down below the gpu getting fresh cool air blown into the gpu they way you did it left the gpu fighting for air

I'm not sure how you can say the unrestricted cool air benefits the CPU in the H700i when it's only 1 degree cooler. That's not enough benefit to be worth the effort of flipping the fans around, even if you don't need to touch a screwdriver. And the big thing, your reverse test just screwed over the GPU in terms of cooling. I can't imagine many people are running their OC right up against the thermal limit, but GPUs are designed to run there. The extra couple degrees the CPU is running cooler won't benefit you in games in the slightest, but the higher GPU temps will screw you over. Well, unless you have enough fans to exchange the case volume many times a minute.
