Hey Spencer, great to see another video!! Don't stop making them!!! You are opening a new door for so many people!!!!! I think your great!!!! So, in the UK, we hang lining paper horizontally ( cross lining) to reduce shrinkage and provide a good surface prior to the actual paper which is hung vertically (as usual) but I moved to Canada a year ago, and it's a bloody nightmare trying to find "lining paper" how does a pro wallpaper installer reduce shrinkage in North America? Do yous just hang vinyl to the drywall or painted wall without cross lining? I don't know who to ask and you seem like the best option. Thank for your time. Ross

Dear Ross, Great question. As you know, different wallpapers have different thresholds with regard to shrinkage. Your best bet is to avoid shrinkage is to thoroughly soak Vinyl wallpaper; let the glue absorb into the fibers of the wallpaper and you will watch the wallpaper expand and shrink back when it goes on the wall, you will do what is called an overlap and a double cut but let it hang there for an hour before you cut it and you will avoid all of the problems with shrinkage my friend - cheers!

I wasn’t even able to see where the alignment was off until you made it perfect! Great information and tips especially at the end where you talk about batch numbers and red wine 😋 The extent of my knowledge and experience with wallpaper is limited. I once watched my mother hang bamboo wallpaper upside down in my grandmothers house when I was eight years old. And now I’ve decided to wallpaper my living room. Hopefully with your help I can do her proud.

Hi Spencer, I have done a job recently and the pattern ran out around the room 1.5 inches. I laser levelled each piece on new wall and re checked with plumb Bob each piece was dead on. The pattern was 1mm out of horizontal level across the paper. Have you come across this? Looks like a printing fault? Love your videos👍🏻

I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying. Are you telling me that the wallpaper from one wall where are you began to the last wall where you ended, that you are 1 1/2 inches off? 1 mm is .039 inches Let’s call that a half of an inch. If you are a half of an inch off as you go around the room which is what I think you are saying, this will prove that if you had a laser level that went around the entire room, this would not have happened to you. What do you have to do is to make sure that you are dead on when you hang a sheet of wallpaper meaning that your pattern is exactly horizontally level from one sheet to the next because here’s what you don’t realize you’re doing as you move along the room… You, with your hands, or throwing the horizontal level off as you install the paper around the room; it’s human error; the reason you’re doing this is because you’re spreading the wallpaper out and each seat is 1/8 of an inch off horizontal level; well, do the math and add this up as you go around the room you will discover that you might be 2 inches off as you go around a large bedroom for example. I would bet that you had windows in the way, doorways for closets and entrance and you have demonstrated a need for a 360° laser line The next time you hang wallpaper without using a level for each sheet, after the third sheet take a long level 4 feet long and put it up against your pattern and tell me if you are not at least 3/16 of an inch off and if you are not, I will buy you lunch

@@spencercolgan thanks Spencer. Sorry I’m saying that my wallpaper is installed bang on level vertically on each wall. Checked with plumb Bob and laser level yet the match pattern drops a 1mm or so each sheet. I don’t think it’s human error as when I hang to the left it drops left and when I hang to the right it goes up. So the pattern is out in the same direction. Each piece is exactly the same 1mm lower on the match on the left. It was a cheap paper the client supplied don’t know if this makes any difference? Thanks

@@markgayes4036 Bear with me then. Measure two sheets on each wall; after installation, if you want to determine if it’s your fault that the paper is going against level, check to see that the edges of each individual sheet of paper after installation is truly parallel. Check out the top, check the middle, and check the bottom. If each sheet is 21 inches, see if your wallpaper sheet is 21 inches wide at the top, the middle, and the bottom. If you are finding out that your paper is truly parallel then you are absolutely correct, it’s not your error. But the fact that your paper goes down to the left and up to the right may be a function of whether or not you are left-handed or right handed, again, attributing such an issue to human error. But to rule out human error, the only way left is to determine if each sheet is truly parallel in the way to do this is to measure the distance from the left edge of an individual sheet to its right edge; if your measurement is 21 inches at the top, and 21 inches in the middle, and 21 inches at the bottom, and you do the sheet next to it, then your paper is poorly manufactured but, if you are seeing that your wallpaper is 20 7/8 of an inch at the top, and 21 1/8 inches in the middle, and 21 1/2 inches at the bottom, then you are to blame

Hi, I have a big problem with my patina wallpaper. It is sooo difficult to recognize a special part of the pattern to match with the rol beside. So I've tried to follow a part I can recognize which is at the left side of 1st wallpaper, (53cm is the pattern repeat) then I find the same at the second rol and put that pattern at the same row with the same in 1 st wall paper. |-....|- like this. But I'm not sure if each pattern y at the begining of the row in wallpaper2, is the right match for the pattern x at the end of wallpaper1?! Can I trust just putting same patterns at the beggining of the raws, in same raw, would result in matched patterns at the end of 1st and begging of 2nd? Because when I just follow my look, I can find better matches with 26.5 cm distance from each other. Uhhhh god I wish I could show the wallpaper to you. It's making me mad.

Look on the label of the wallpaper and tell me if it is a StraightMatch or a drop match… If it is a StraightMatch, go up to the top of your wallpaper where it meets the ceiling and identify something peculiar about the pattern where it meets the ceiling… If it’s a StraightMatch, simply put the very same piece of the pattern at the top of the wall where it meets the ceiling on the next sheet and you will see the pattern come together and you will be able to meet the connection far more easily; however, if it is a drop match, connect accordingly but then the third sheet where the top of the sheet meets the ceiling will be the same exact as the first sheet; do not complicate the situation, it is a lot more easy Than you think

Thank you for your video but just to point out that people will search for videos when then they're in the middle of a wallpapering job and just need a bite size quick video to explain what to do. You spray water but don't explain you're spraying water but talk about other things. This could have been condensed to a 2 min clip instead of 10 mins of talking and me coming away with learning I just need to add a little water and kneed the paper outwards.

In some videos you advise to warn the client if the walls are not at a level that the pattern can be lost and in this video you say that if the pattern does not match it is our fault. Can you clarify that? Sometimes it would be good to remove the window frame to facilitate the wallpaper work.
