I'm based in Australia I have used a 1mm PVC x 50mm shield but it's time consuming with wide commercial wallcoverings as we normally work on a square metre rate these days I use a cutting tool from Muraspec which saves heaps of time.

Spencer while this works commercial installers use a seam buster or double cutter. They cost $5-$30 and they use double sided (4 edges) Swedish blades that are good for multiple cuts and you won't cut and damage the wall also you will need a 4-8ft professional straight edge with a handle.

Capo…. Please send me a link for it pal. I appreciate it. I want to see what you mean. Thank you for alllll your contributions!!!

Never seen anyone do a double cut with a knife before. We use single edge blades in the Union

Yes sir. I didn’t have my single edge blade holder with me.

I hang wallpaper and have never seen that shield at any stores. Where do you get it ?

I recently encountered a problem when installing 54 inch vinyl, at every seam where I double cut, the shade of the paper got slightly lighter in colour but only from looking at an angle, (from straight on it looked good) what might this be? My mistake in installing? Or an issue with wallpaper ? ( It was like this on every seam on a high number of wallpaper rolls) Thanks! .... I also reverse hung as stated in the hanging instructions.
@beaverkleaver93835 жыл бұрын
HDS mack you could of reversed strips accidentally
@ryans9029 Жыл бұрын
The reversing each drop is why you are seeing the difference. Unfortunately.. part of the game with some materials.
@capodad2u Жыл бұрын
Try overlapping at least 2 or 3 inches. The most common reason for seam shading on type 11 vinyl is because the sheets were not overlapped enough.

Keep in mind that in the “real world” commercial wallcoverings need to be hung FAST! Great tip for an “by the hour” installer but this technique would be too time consuming!

Thanks. I charge a lot of $$. Not an hourly wage my friend. I’m highly sought after. Truly. I’m a teacher.

i don't recommend anyone use a smoother as a straight edge. for walls of that height you should be using a 48 inch aluminum straight edge. this also doesn't require you to use a laser to make the cut straight(saves time) backing strip is mandatory yes but i find the plastic carries glue and gets messy and requires constant cleaning. we tend 2 use the side cut off's with the first sheet as a backing strip, pattern end facing glue to lesson glue absorbing then use the excess cut off from the previous double cut and so on. you COULD technically use the top and bottom cut offs as strips but those tend to be bowed slightly from the roll when hung vertically and could affect the seam overlap. put up the first sheet keeping whatever edge your next piece will follow not fully smoothed (inch and a half or 2 inch) add the strip and smooth, apply the next piece then double cut with straight edge. these days a lot of commercial taping is trash so before i make a run i measure where my seams are going and run a line of spray shellac or a bin primer vertical 4-5 inch wide. it gives you way more play time especially if your working with trimmed fabrics and veneers. also i find it better to use a quality 9mm utility knife (i recommend olfa XA-1) it seams up cleaner.

I don’t work commercial projects anymore for that reason; they violate OSHA rules all the time; it’s a job side prohibition to blast music like that; please understand that is not my music

No straight edge? Not how I was taught an also they make a knife that prevents you from cutting into the wall. 10 times faster. Just my opinion 🤷

Your just an average wall paper guy you just have all the top of the range tools ie if everyone had a laser I am sure everyone could do this not hard pal

I agree with you. In fact my motto is that “you can do this too.”
@ryans9029 Жыл бұрын
You are wrong about everyone being able to do it. It's a skill. That takes experience. The laser doesn't make it easy. A straight edge makes it just as easy.. if not easier.. Go give it a try. Post the results. 🤣
