I often get into discussions with people who see those who live in chateaux as somehow privileged ! I tell them that it means, thermals, long johns, wellies, chillblains or sun burn, leaks and basins, dry rot or woodworm, weeds galore, quick meals, wood cutting and fire stoking, more weeding, more weeding again, ivy pulling, paint and more paint and constant checking for new problems. It rarely means evening dress and caviar and few have a fleet of Range Rovers and big machinery in the garages. It is a lifestyle choice and usually akin to the old saying of planting a tree under whose shade you will never sit. Takes courage in spades mixed with a certain amount of total bonkers madness which is why so many English people choose this life! Hugs XO

What strikes me is what a great team you two make. And moving to France (for the relaxing lifestyle 😂😂) and buying a chateau has required you to be true partners in daily life, sometimes splitting tasks but often needing to do them together. It's a closeness and inter dependency that I think many couples crave but don't, or can't, achieve. I'm sure it's not always easy but it is surely rewarding. And definitely enviable!

As a mother of three children and a grandmother of seven, I felt strongly that I had to address your morning routine list. The list included feeding house cats, feral cats, dogs, birds and donkeys. However, I was aghast!!! Yes, aghast that you didn’t include feeding your daughters. Those poor starving girls I thought. Then you went shopping for bones to make soup and I was so relieved. Feeding them later in the day must be on your Afternoon/Evening list. Whew! I feel so much better now. They’re being fed after all. I do hope you know my tongue is in my cheek. Love your videos. 😊

I have heard you say before that everything in France takes a lot long to get things done than it does in the states, and this was a perfect example. You two have so much patience. I don't know my family could handle it. Paricularly liked the "WeFe" phrase. Keep up the good work. You already have a beautiful showplace.

For Milan, definitely recommend the Last Supper, the Duomo rooftop (go on a clear day, take the stairs), and the Navigli area around the canal -- some cute restaurants and bars. Outside the city, take the train to Lake Como -- recommend going to Varenna and taking the ferry around over visiting Como itself.

Tips on Milan- I traveled solo. The tickets for Davinci's Last Supper are hard to get, especially last minute- but because I was solo I was able to get one a few weeks before. I really enjoyed the Starbucks Reserve, they roast all the beans for Europe. Of course the Duomo- the rooftop tour was my favorite. And lots a great little restaurants tucked among the streets. Hope you have a lovely visit. Can't wait to see the greenhouse!

Yikes, getting a bill like that had to be scary! I'm glad that it worked out with your insurance. It's crazy how green the grass is there and that it is still growing! Our grass (here in Pennsylvania) has been covered with snow now for about a month, and we are having crazy cold temperatures. My poor dogs are missing their daily walks. I try to take them on warmer days, but I have to be careful not to slip and fall, and make sure they don't get too cold. They do love playing in the snow though. I'm ready for spring!!

Sadly, your lucky cats brought to my mind the loss of the lame stray cat, Scruff, who 'adopted' me a few years ago. I befriended him and fed him and let him into the house for comfort. My grandparents lived in Northern MN. I grew up going up there is the 60’s & 70’s. They had the only phone on the whole lake, so if the phone rang, it was often for someone we would have to run through the woods to notify. It was very strange, and …the operator knew you by name and would connect the party when you were ready (ran back thru the woods with the person who got the call). All you had to do was lift the phone receiver and the operator would answer and connect the caller.

The reality of countryside living in Europe, there was no phone everywhere untill mobile phone. Phone companies don't serve very remote regions in many cases because of the high costs. My grandfather never had a phone untill he moved to a nursery home (at age 90) in 1996. He also did not have running water (only a manual pump on a source outside) or a WC (only a outhouse with a septic pit below). He did get electricity in the late 1950's only. That is how people lived for centuries and some still do in some corners of the countryside in Europe. And it works also...
