I had a random idea, I decided to get a stick and put it into the vacuum chamber to see how much lighter it actually gets, this vacuum chamber is used on our main Channel which is Warped perception.
I was surprised as to how much lighter the stick actually became after degassing and dehydrating the wood.
I thought this is a cool experiment to show your kids on how much of everything around us is a very large percentage of water.
sins in the vacuum chamber all of the water evaporates from the wood all that's left behind is the cellulose and all of the wood fibers in the branch.
hope you enjoy this video and I hope your kids did too because I know mine did.
don't forget to check out our main Channel which is Warped perception.
thanks

You might think it was dumb at the time, but this is exactly the information I wanted; all in a simple short video. Thanks brother 🤘

It is not dumb man.... It is educational.... You have here demonstrated that water in an homogenous or heterogenous mixture can be removed by just using vacuum and not heat of any kind whatsoever..... It is really a good idea for removing water from wet wood and perhaps use it as a stove fuel supposedly....

That's exactly why I searched youtube for this idea. I live in Oklahoma City and now have a bunch of firewood and a vacuum pump. If I could weld together a chamber big enough to hold 4 or 5 logs to dry them out, I won't need to wait a year.

Technically it IS using heat to "boil" the water. The difference is that at so low pressure, water boils with just the ambient room temperature. If it was REALLY COLD (don't know exact temperature) then the water could still be liquid.

This is actually extremely interesting, I wanted to use wood as insulator for a project I have and to make it as efficient as possible I want to remove all the moisture from it. This method is much simpler and less harmful for the wood than trying to heat it up uniformly without heating it up too much locally. Thanks man!

Very cool!!! Not dumb AT all!!! The real interesting thing is when you gently heat it and leave it in a vacuum. The semi-volatile organic compounds will evaporate from it as well and get even lighter. Very very cool. I bet its far stronger as well.

Brian Streufert thanks, you are actually right, one thing I noticed was it was much much stronger, I almost included that but this is just a little kind of thing that I did real quick with my little girl. I guess that kind of explains kiln-dried Lumber.

Actually great video. Only thing missing is that you didn't set the wood on fire. I would have loved to see how easily it ignites now.

Not a dumb idea for a video. Infact you quickly answered a question about vacuum drying firewood. Nice short sweet video

Thank you for the video. That wood should be much easier to catch on fire now, great way to make some kindling out of otherwise green wood. I think it would also make turning it into charcoal easier as well.

Great way to make seasoned fire tinder! Of course you need a deep vacuum for a lot longer period of time.

Thank uou for the video. Does it also mean that any guitar or wood made musical instrument if conserved in a vacuum chamber might lose its vibrating property and damage the instrument?

Can you use a vacuum chamber with water to make the wood absorb water so it doesn't float?

If wet firewood is burned in a fireplace it will build up creosote. If it's seasoned it won't or it's way less. I wonder if doing in a vacuum reduces it to our maybe it's something about aging the wood. Ideas?

When you pyrolize wood it actually decomposes cellulose (polysaccharides) polymers into basic constituents of various complexity and length (e.g. toluene). The chains aren't broken down due to presense of water I think, but I'm not sure. That's why you get all that sticky substance.

Cool video, it helps with a project i'm working on. Curious, where did the water go? Was it wet in the chamber or turned to gas and expelled when you released the pressure?

Hmm...seems much cheaper than running a kiln. Plus a lot of ppl don't like kiln dried wood bcuz it gets "crunchy" compared to air dried. I wonder if vacuum dried avoid creating that property.
