I have an alternate theory: As soon as he got the "pay or else" message from Alterra, he used the comms system of the Neptune rocket to contact the Mongolian Transgov that the Degasi (which actually have a prior claim to Alterra) originated from. Now the ONLY surviving expert on 4546B is supporting and providing information to another company. Bravo Alterra, your greed set you back.

I can definitely see him being a high ranking member of the expeditions back to the planet. If an astronaut crash landed on Mars, managed to survive and make it back to earth it definitely seems like they would be priceless. In my own headcanon, Riley stuffs his neptune rocket full of ion cubes, ion power cells/batteries, etc. Then when he gets back to Alterra territory and is told he needs to pay off his debt, he negotiates by offering to trade cancellation of his debt for ion power technology and the schematics to fabricate them. I mean if the standard batteries that we get by default are the best Alterra has to offer in terms of power storage, those ion power sources and the schematics are gonna be worth a lot. Thus Riley is promoted to the Alterra Board for his brilliant discovery of ion power and he now lives like a king off of the royalties that he secured during negotiations.

I think Alterra let Ryley land because A. Why would they give him rocket blueprints B. This may be the PDA's fault, as it is probably design to not let people with "debt" to land, so Alterra gives permition to the PDA to let him land C. Ryley has a ton of information that Altera can use. There is also probably other reasons. Also I want a happy ending :)

I know I'm late but here's my take, The whole purpose of the detour was to rescue the Degasi members, Alterra did this to better their relations with the Mongolian Transgov. Since Ryley found out what happened to the Degasi members (with PDA logs as proof) he could sell this highly valuable intel to Alterra and Alterra can use this intel to strengthen their relationship with the Mongolian Transgov by giving closure to the Torgal Mining Colony.

I like to believe that Riley became a remote advisor for the following Alterra Missions on the planet, since I didn‘t take him as an adventure-seeking type of guy like Robin. He just happend to crash unwillingly and just tried to survive. But I didn’t take him as an ambitious person either, so becoming a leading member of Alterra to me felt at odds both to his personality and his former position. But I do hope He got a happy Ending.

My theory is that the main character immediately went back to 4546B after hearing of his colossal debt, spent a while weaponizing the Neptune, and took a lot of supplies from Alterra by force before heading back to 4546B and setting up a permanent residence there. Oh, also he separates the AI voice in his PDA from the rest of the AI.

Did he turn tail and return to 4546B? Did he somehow find a way to pay Alterra the money? Is he in jail or his he deceased? Or did something else happen to him? We may never know.

A couple of years later, it's a shame they didn't make Riley a character in Below Zero. Even if it was just a PDA log, it would've been awesome. Plus, we'd finally get a voice for him. Sadly, this didn't happen.. The writers missed out.. I also feel like what could've happened is it possibly could be something like 'working to pay off debt'.. In general. Riley gets back, and has the option to either pay off the debt entirely, OR, they could go back to 4546B, work for like 4-8 years, and pay off the debt that way. It would be a interesting way to implement Riley into Below Zero (if it happened) and would explain why he went back to the planet he MAY or may not have hated. (Who knows)

In my opinion this is what happened. Since Alterra hadn't originally discovered Planet 4546B, when Ryley came back to Earth, the supplies he brought with him from the planet amounted to the amount he needed to pay and thus, he could retire comfortably or work as a researcher. But then he was so disturbed by how Alterra goes about with things that he just ran long and hard and never looked back. I wager he lives downtown somewhere, staying out of Alterra-related businesses and just watching what goes on from afar. Or maybe I'm wrong and like Marguerit Maida he's living in a hidden sector of the planet? I dunno but I included him in two fanfics I made. One was fully Subnautica based and another was a crossover of Subnautica and Ultraman. In both of them he was married, but its to who he was married to that differs.

its actually very simple. They say it took around two months just to get to 4546B, that would leave a very large time gap where the Alterra executives thirst for Ryley's discoveries. Just give them the PDA. Almost any player would go ham on scanning alien lifeforms, and the most experienced would definitely have reapers and ghosts scanned and ready to be seen by the public. An entire continent of a huge and diverse planet would definitely outweigh any debt you had. And you recorded every detail of it.

So in my first playthrough, I was roleplaying pretty heavily. So just before launching my escape rocket I recalled the AI say something about my dept to Alterra for using the planet's resources. So I climbed back down and picked up all my ion cubes, ion batteries and ion cells and put them in the rocket storage. Now one might make the argument that the ion cubes themselves won't count as repayment as they were found on the planet, but the same cannot be said for the ion cells and batteries. That's something Riley invented. I find it perfectly reasonable that Riley would be smart enough to take all of the Ion equipment with him to act as repayment. (Or even act as means to a promotion for inventing such a phenomenal source of power)

I like the theories that Ryley received promotions because of his discoveries, especially since it aligns with other aspects of the game's lore, such as the board director who was initially an engineer who managed to invent the Seamoth. Alterra may be scum, but they respect their valuable assets, and Ryley would, without a doubt, be a valuable asset to the company, since he knows more about the planet than anyone else, having survived on it himself. I also think that Ryley may have ultimately succumbed to after effects caused by kharaa having compromised his immune system, thus leading to another disease possibly killing him in the process.

Honestly, while being promoted to the board is an option. I imagine Alterra would keep Ryley specifically in an exploration position. He managed to survive the experience in Subnautica, and achieve so much, without any weaponry of any sort. Alterra, especially after review of such, would likely consider Ryley himself to be a vital asset and resource they could utilize on other planets. So, while they could promote him to the board, they could also very likely send him as a survival expert for expeditions on other planets. Perhaps even giving him mandatory additional training (That he will be responsible for paying for of course). They might also give him combat training (considering how he could take out Leviathan's with nothing but a stasis rifle and combat knife) - perhaps with additional "educational" training to reinforce his loyalty to Alterra (Or perhaps promotions to give him a high sense of responsibility and power within Alterra) - and send him as one of their primary units for combatting dangerous local wildlife on planets they're attempting to colonize for resources, etc.

For me 3 and 4 are my head cannon because it makes sense he got promoted and put in a position to supervise 4546b because he is the expert on the planet and the architects. Also if the news about the event was known he would be a celebrity.

A theory I found (which works well with Theory 3) is that Riley sold the information of what is on 4546B to cover his trillion-credit bill, which would either help lead into theory 3 or he's still an overglorified janitor, just that he's now rich with having sold information that could help Alterra rake in trillions.

I think number 3 is the best imo, but before watching, my theory was that he paid off his debt with knowledge (or they just took his PDA 💀), considering how in BZ there are a few things directly related to his story in the first game, biggest being: The bed with Lifepod 5 blanket, the bed with Ghost Levi , the poster of Ryley and the Reaper at back of Aurora, and the poster of the PRAWN in the lava mountain with the Sea Dragon (presumably with Ryley in the suit). But I think theory 3 also supports that too now
