In my own headcanon, Riley stuffs his neptune rocket full of ion cubes, ion power cells/batteries, etc. Then when he gets back to Alterra territory and is told he needs to pay off his debt, he negotiates by offering to trade cancellation of his debt for ion power technology and the schematics to fabricate them. I mean if the standard batteries that we get by default are the best Alterra has to offer in terms of power storage, those ion power sources and the schematics are gonna be worth a lot. Thus Riley is promoted to the Alterra Board for his brilliant discovery of ion power and he now lives like a king off of the royalties that he secured during negotiations.

I know I'm late but here's my take, The whole purpose of the detour was to rescue the Degasi members, Alterra did this to better their relations with the Mongolian Transgov. Since Ryley found out what happened to the Degasi members (with PDA logs as proof) he could sell this highly valuable intel to Alterra and Alterra can use this intel to strengthen their relationship with the Mongolian Transgov by giving closure to the Torgal Mining Colony.

So in my first playthrough, I was roleplaying pretty heavily. So just before launching my escape rocket I recalled the AI say something about my dept to Alterra for using the planet's resources. So I climbed back down and picked up all my ion cubes, ion batteries and ion cells and put them in the rocket storage. Now one might make the argument that the ion cubes themselves won't count as repayment as they were found on the planet, but the same cannot be said for the ion cells and batteries. That's something Riley invented. I find it perfectly reasonable that Riley would be smart enough to take all of the Ion equipment with him to act as repayment. (Or even act as means to a promotion for inventing such a phenomenal source of power)

I like the theories that Ryley received promotions because of his discoveries, especially since it aligns with other aspects of the game's lore, such as the board director who was initially an engineer who managed to invent the Seamoth. Alterra may be scum, but they respect their valuable assets, and Ryley would, without a doubt, be a valuable asset to the company, since he knows more about the planet than anyone else, having survived on it himself. I also think that Ryley may have ultimately succumbed to after effects caused by kharaa having compromised his immune system, thus leading to another disease possibly killing him in the process.

My theory is a combination of 2 and 4 - in Alterra custody, on the planet. Minor spoilers for information from BZ ahead! BZ gives some info on how the Aurora crash was seen from Alterra space, and some of the info reveals that the planet is about a year away from the phasegate network, the fastest ships would still take nine months, and the Neptune was designed to just cut the journey short by months. It also said that Alterra was already sending another mission there. So, I'm theorising that after a few months on the Neptune, Ryley intercepts with the rescue / scout ships and is taken on board, and just gets sent straight back to the planet. Nothing he has on the planet can get rid of that debt. Alterra has claimed the planet, and that includes its contents, precursor tech included. It ALSO would include the enzyme 42 currently in the blood of the only known survivor of Kharaa... So, they go back to the planet. Ryley is kept alive for medical research and his knowledge of the planet, since Alterra plans to exploit it. He's probably on the Vesper as of BZ. (We DO know he'll be involved! Tom Jubert confirmed it months ago, and also that the Vesper wouldn't be so helpful, and the PDAs talking about the Aurora ingame now are named 'ency_ryley_1-5'. I strongly suspect Alterra will end up being the Big Bad, and Ryley either helps Robin or vice versa. Either way, damn you, Alterra, he's suffered enough!!)

In my headcanon the player, Riley got back to alterra hq with all his precursor-Alterra infused tech and that alone, plus all of his pda data and the info on what happened to the degasi crew, payed off his debt and got promoted very quickly

It was easy: The reason the arctic bases were made was because Robinson told them everything and sent people for research. Why what i say is correct: The ship where Below Zero character came WASN'T shot down They came FOR RESEARCH and they RESEARCH Precursor bases(as shown in beginning) They said she can go home Whenever whe wants, something the Precursor lazer GUN wouldn't allow It's easy to guess it.

Idk I'm not too certain, in Below Zero, there's a few decorational items specific to his story, like a bed with lifepod 5, a bed with Ghost Levi in the Lost River, a poster of him and the Reaper at back of Aurora, and a poster of the PRAWN suit at the lava mountain with the Sea Dragon. I think lore-wise he had to have influenced the creation of those things somehow. Just my take :P

In my opinion this is what happened. Since Alterra hadn't originally discovered Planet 4546B, when Ryley came back to Earth, the supplies he brought with him from the planet amounted to the amount he needed to pay and thus, he could retire comfortably or work as a researcher. But then he was so disturbed by how Alterra goes about with things that he just ran long and hard and never looked back. I wager he lives downtown somewhere, staying out of Alterra-related businesses and just watching what goes on from afar. Or maybe I'm wrong and like Marguerit Maida he's living in a hidden sector of the planet? I dunno but I included him in two fanfics I made. One was fully Subnautica based and another was a crossover of Subnautica and Ultraman. In both of them he was married, but its to who he was married to that differs.

@@TheLastBacon because in the fully Subnautica one he marries Robin and they are expecting a kid in the epilogue. In my crossover one he marries an Ultrawoman and they both have a son, and then later, a daughter. I dunno but for the most part I imagine he just wants nothing to with Alterra anymore.
