A galaxy shouldn't be labelled "dead" unless all the stars are dead. A galaxy that stops producing hydrogen should be labelled "dying" due to Galactic Strangulation. Galactic Strangulation should be called "Galactic Suffocation".

The non sense of this consideration, tells us someone who can be happy, if he lives 80 years at all, it reflects pretty well the level of science we have to deal with in our days. This vloger also is fast in deleting comments which don't fit his view. Got u bitch...

I agree, these terms are too emotionally binding, a bit too anthropocentric. I can't foresee what effect this can have on us, but I find it to be a troubling precedent to set. Describing nonhuman things in human terms creates a strange bond that might interfere with our learning abilities later on.

Hanini yes, small orange stars can survive for tens of millions of years and still be the right size to host habitable planets. galaxy death just means that those stars are not being born anymore. also, even smaller red dwarf stars of about 8% of sun's mass will survive for about 5.5 TRILLION years, but are unlikely to host habitable planets.

Our Sun will die before the Milky Way does. So the good news is we don't have to worry about our galaxy anytime soon. The Bad news is that Earth will be uninhabitable in approximately 500 to 1000 million years.

Are there any relatively accurate statistics that say what are the proportions of these dead galaxies in comparison to those in so called "green valley" or "blue cloud" which are still producing new stars? I've been doing some research in astronomical journals but I had really hard times trying to get it clear. As far as I know the vast majority of galaxies should be still alive, can anyone answer that question with referring to the reliable source?

I think this video is causing some misconceptions around the term "dead galaxy". It's important to note that even if star formation, for the most part, ceases, the stars themselves and the fusion processes that drive them will still persist until the stars exhaust their supply. For red dwarf stars, this can take trillions of years. If red dwarf stars can support life in their habitable zones, then the duration its host galaxy can support life itself is also trillions of years. It's also of note that star system formation is a hellish cataclysm of molten pro-planets blowing each other apart in countless collisions around a dim progenitor star. How we choose to label these events can change our view of them drastically.

Brandon Forbes I think it all depends on the surroundings of the star and the type of star. Dwarf stars like red dwarfs just burn out. Because of this, the material created inside the core remains there. With sun like stars, when they run out of hydrogen in their cores, they begin to expand into a red giant while the core begins to collapse to a certain point. The outer layer will be thrown into space as a planetary nebula, but the core will become a white dwarf. With Red supergiants and blue supergiants, their cores will collapse into a supernova, but the corpse they leave behind could ionize or swallow the material, making it sterile and unable to form new stars. The supernovae could produce a pulsar, which continually shoots out deadly x-ray radiation, a magnetar, which is highly magnetic and could disrupt the processes that unite the atoms and molecules ejected from the supernovae, or a black hole, which would just eat anything in the vicinity that draws near it.

@wingracer1614
@wingracer1614 7 жыл бұрын
I feel like "dead" is a bad analogy here. That's like calling a human that has stopped growing and can no longer reproduce dead. When I think of a dead galaxy, i think of a giant swirl of black holes, various dwarfs and neutron stars with very few actual burning stars left in it.

On the principle that our galaxy is half the size of Andromeda and that our own galaxy still produce stars, we can assure ourselves that it is unlikely that Andromeda is dead, as both galaxies are aproximativly the same age (I could be wrong). Andromeda has twince the numbers of stars that we have.

but sadly we cant go past our space pocket, which contains the milky way and andromeda galaxies, because every other pocket is moving away faster than the speed of light.

you made the comment of "green valley" but what about the green mile the term used for death row immates on their way to execution? could that be the reason for the term used for a dying galaxy?

I thought the Andromeda Galaxy was the only major galaxy headed our way? Everything else is moving away from us. How are we going to merge with more and more galaxies?

You 'theory' I will say of andromeda being dead is very possible because of the speed light travels it could also be closer than we think too

Does that mean that at some point, there's gonna be no 'living' galaxy in the universe anymore? If the fusion of hydrogen to helium creates energy and keeps suns alive, will the universe run out of hydrogen? Or is there something that fuses into hydrogen?

We don't know how long red dwarf stars live because a lot have been around since shortly after the big bang and today are still considered infants.

I disagree with the definition of what it means when a galaxy is "dead". Does it still have the possibility of say, supernovas? How about asteroids colliding into planets? Is it still spinning? Is it still active in almost all other ways that a galaxy can be active? Maybe "stagnant", or "dying" is a better way of defining it because that just does not make a whole lot of sense to me to consider a galaxy "dead" if it's still active in again, almost all ways it would be anyway, excluding the creation of new stars. Or maybe there is a perspective I am not seeing here. Any thoughts?

Hey Dnews Are we at the center of the observable universe, since we can see about same distance in all the direction, so is that true or due to other factors we are not. Note that I am asking about the OBSERVABLE universe and not the universe in general

Crazy to think there will just be floating star sized balls of metal zipping around the universe. One day they will be completely cooled off
