What Happens When Sunlight Hits Our Skin

When people think of what happens when the sunlight hits the skin, they immediately think of Vitamin D production. And it pretty much ends there. But most people would be surprised at all the wonderful compounds that get produced from the life-giving sun hitting the largest organ in the body, the skin.
The video highlights how exposing yourself to the early morning sun helps reset the circadian rhythm. Which means that the more sunlight you get during the day, the more melatonin will be produced at night, allowing for a good night’s sleep. Any parent will tell you how well their children sleep after playing out in the sunshine all day.
Exposing yourself to the sun can help prevent and treat depression since sunlight dramatically increases serotonin levels in the brain. Men who were measured on a very bright day produced 8x more serotonin than those who were measured on a cloudy, dismal day. And serotonin levels are 7x higher in our bodies in summer than in winter, which explains why so many people suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) during the winter months.
And dopamine, the neurotransmitter that is responsible for making us feel bliss, euphoria and give us enhanced motivation and satisfaction is also produced when the sunlight hits the skin.
Even endorphins, which elevate the mood while producing a sense of well being are made when we’re out in the sun.
Nitric oxide is produced by the UVA rays. Nitric oxide is famous for reducing blood pressure since it is a potent vasodilator, which means it opens up the blood vessels causing increased blood flow in the blood vessels, which lowers the blood pressure.
There are less colds and flus in the summer months as the sunlight has potent effects on enhancing immunity, helping our T-cells move to the site of infection to kill invading pathogens. This happens because the skin has about twice the number of T cells in it than the number circulating in the blood.
Light exposure helps MS patients, not just by increasing Vitamin D levels, which prevents relapses, but also by helping to prevent attacks on the myelin sheath by the immune system. Research shows that UV light from the sun inhibits spinal cord inflammation and demyelination by preventing the inflammatory cytokines which provoke these reactions to a minimum.
Many people will tell you their skin diseases, especially eczema, psoriasis and acne clear up in the summer time as they are more exposed to the sunlight.
The video highlights once and for all why we feel, after the end of the long, cold winter, so happy to allow the sun’s rays to penetrate our skin as we feel an immediate increase in our mood and overall health by being out in the sun.

Good advice. There does seem to be a lot of advice elsewhere about the risk of excessive exposure to sunlight, which might inhibit it’s normal function. Worth noting that all mammals manufacture the first stage of vitamin D in their skin, even when they have plenty of hair. It appears that UV-B can penetrate animal hair (but not our artificial clothing), so cattle, sheep, horses etc that are farmed in the open do the same thing as us, when it is warm enough etc. Indeed, it may be that that is the reason why UV-B is used as an energy source, because it is capable of penetrating the hair.

And you can buy farm products, such as “Mole-Lyx” for cattle, sheep etc that contain a fair bit of vitamin D for use in the winter. I sometimes come across them on open land where they graze outdoors at that time of year.

What about the reduced capacity to create vitamin D in the skin of older people ? Do they therefore require more exposure to the sun than younger people ? What are your thoughts on the consumption of Cod liver oil in older populations to maintain vitamin D levels ?
@leyniaLip
@leyniaLip 26 күн бұрын
Except that, as people age, their skim loses oil. The oil is necesssary for transforming UV radiotion into vitamon D. Older people therefore do not get D from sunshine.

I would imagine it does indirectly since its rays are so beneficial -- every little bit of help we get in the way of food, early bedtime, sunlight on the skin, etc. will help our immune systems to react in a more intelligent way.

In EUROPE was the same "threat" in the '97 ERA.. "Ozone layer thinning, we will all die". Every generation has their 'threat'... they make sure we are terrified of everything all of the time. Use SPF 30 all the time in the sun. It'll protect you but will get the benefits of the sun. I did the same since childhood and even in South-Africa where the sun is merciless at times!! Never burned, don't have leopard spots or any other. Some SPFs have fantastic technology. Better than our grandparents had.. xx..
