Plane engines in WW2 did indeed use gunpowder to start, utilising special shotgun type shells with a "damp" mix of powder and no wadding etc which when fired in series gave the engine a superb rotation if the batteries were dead. Interceptors of the RAF utilised these for virtually instant starting of planes that intercepted the Luftwaffe on their daily air raids as starting a plane normally can take some extra minutes whereas the shell way just needed the engine to be fuel primed.

Gas turbines use rocket charges to spin up in a hurry 🚀
@robertheinkel62252 жыл бұрын
When the charge was ignited, the force was directed to one cylinder, causing the engine to rotate. It didn’t run on the powder, just used to cause rotation. On the J57 jet engines, a gallon of powder was placed in the started breach. As the powder burned, the exhaust gas was blown against the starter turbine, causing the engine to rotate. So all any shell or powder did was cause enough engine rotation, to start the engine normally

What if you poured gallium in the coolant or under the valve cover on an aluminum engine? I assume it would get trapped in the Rad and cause a blockage' or in an oil passage... If that happens, you could hone the cylinders and rub gallium all over before reassembling and leaving the engine alone long enough for the gallium to spread.

Fun facts about gun powder. It is self oxidizing so soaking it in fuel shouldn't change how it works as long as you supply it heat enough to hit its auto ignition temperature. Soaking it for long enough in something like water can ruin it though for 2 reasons. Either oxidizing the powder before ignition or sucking the heat out of the powder preventing ignition. It's a fun substance

@gtametro2 жыл бұрын
It wont make any difference if it can't move more air than the engine can draw in under vaccum. You can get high powered electric superchargers already that do work, but i don't see the point in repeating something thats been done a million times. And how would you have them measure volumetric efficiency anyway? by fuel usage? Boring
@jjhack3r2 жыл бұрын
The name supercharger means that the air/fuel charge going to the engine is above atmospheric pressure when in use. You’re just talking about a blower which wouldn’t do much of anything...

@@punker4Real In a sense, yes. Isolating it for combustion or propulsion requires more energy than the output. Our current system of energy usage relies on the fact that nature formed it over a long period of time to be almost instantly useful without using more energy than what is gained. You could call this the “efficiency threshold”
