On one of my save files I found a full odds shiny Golbat (I have three of those including the two I have on another save file) in that one cave that you have to use the special ability to see in, and a full odds shiny Venonat on the route east of Fuchsia City as soon as I walked into it, note, this was before I had the Shiny Charm too

So the only chance is the remaining 2, and at 32possible ivs (including 0 possible ivs out of 31) , that leaves your chances at 1/32 x 1/32 = 1/1024. So that would be your chances AFTER you get a catch combo of 31. Keep in mind every encounter is what would be called an "independent event" meaning once you reach that number of encounters, you ARE NOT guaranteed to find one. You have just as much of a chance at your 32nd encounter than you do at your 999th, just like in this case. He could have gotten one right away, or he could go weeks without seeing one. Same exact principle applies for the shiny rate. He only got a few here out of 999, whereas some people can see 10 or more, just chance and a lot of luck.

i've gotten to a combo of 300. I try to go for a shiny of each tier evolution. For each shiny, I like to max them out with candy. Therefore, if a pokemon has 3 pokemon in its evolution line, I need to get 600 candy. Although shiny chances are the best after a combo of 31 is reached, a higher combo yields a higher amount of candy. The combo to candy earned 'ratio' is as follow: 1-30 yields 3-4 candy, 31-100 yields 4-5 candy, and 101-150 yields 5-7 candy, and 151 and higher can really yield about 6-8 candy. Using pinap berries also increases the amount of candy u get per pokemon (reduces the chance of not getting candy, thus increasing the candy earned per pokemon). Therefore, it really only takes about 200 pokemon to get 600 candy (however, after the first 100, I usually only have about 110 or so candy. So after 100 pokemon really increases the amount of candy earned per pokemon).
