It's easy to call these acts "scams". But go back and watch the massage part. Sadly, the man is 'living' on a few hundred calories a day - his biceps are probably close to the size of the tourist's wrists. Some acts are scams, no doubt, but some are fighting to survive. Not to mention how unhappy he looks. I see desperation in his eyes when he holds the tourist's hand close to his face.

It's really true - a lot of first time visitors often get (understandably) anxious or aggressive - but the scammers are almost never aggressive so it's easier to get away with a smile or some banter.

I have spent about 18 months total in India (if you add up all the weeks and months of my visits over the last 20 years) and I have actually found that the hotel touts can be useful. You tell them what you want to pay, and they lead you to nearby hotels that are usually OK (and if they're not - don't stay there!) .... They take you away from all the obvious main street places where everybody else stays, and take you to harder-to-find hotels, so you invariably end up with a better deal for a room. This is really useful as sometimes it's not even straightforward finding a room, with many hotels being booked-out on a particular day. So it's a mistake to treat ever tout as a scammer - they can be useful.

but did he request the service? no. i agree that he looks poor and this might be his only way of making money, but it isn't right to pester people, and i agree that it might not be a full fledged scam but it is very similar to if you've ever walked through a mall and people at a phone or electronic store will come up to you asking if you need anything, except this time they put the phone in your hands and let you play a few games then request you pay them for their services... services you didn't ask for and made no deal whatsoever about, but nonetheless you received something from the sitatuon whether it be entertainment or some type of physical treatment. Either way the pushing of services and products is everywhere in India and you will find yourself out of money if you feel bad for each and every one.

I found the video really informative, it does show the generally benign nature of the scams or hustles going on compared to other countries and the scams going on there, that could turn out to be dangerous. Some of the rougher parts of South Africa come to mind where things could go seriously wrong compared to India. I've wanted to visit India for a while but haven't had the chance to yet. Someday soon hopefully!

When some begger asking money to foreigners they give INR 100, 500 stop doing this first, that problem is everywhere which you showed in my city Varanasi, but due to history, religious, meditation learning, etc, that's why foreigners come to this city mostly, bcoz of that scammers increase day by day. I was in India for two weeks and we were warned NOT allow locals to charge us more or the word would go out and we all would be paying more and more....which I did abide to but I have felt bad ever since ....I mean a guy would pedal his ass off on his rickshaw bicycle hauling fat Americans for miles and then try to change the price at the destination....I would say no each time but ever since then I feel bad ...I SERIOUSLY would not have minded at all paying 10x the quoted price....even then it would have been dirt cheap...but there were a lot of us so I don't know maybe it would have been bad to? I mean there were people in our group that seriously had little money.....If I had it do over again though I would have tipped very generously ...live and learn

Best way to avoid being scammed in India is just don't go there. On my first and last visit, I knew things could only get worse when there was someone selling toilet paper...by the sheet, in the Airport restroom.
