Wow. Your timing chain guide video was actually the one that convinced me that an Xterra would be a good buy... they aren't difficult, just time consuming.. and mine is still quiet. They're known for SMOD, which also happens to Ford and Chrysler pickups, occasional sensor problems (to which all modern vehicles are susceptible) and rust (again WAY too common on modern pickups from all manufacturers). I have an '08 that just went over 150,000 miles and I'm still quite happy with it. The only real issue I have with the Xterra is that the newest one I can get to replace it is already 7 years old. If they update it and put it on the new Frontier frame I think they'd make a killing on it... I for one would go put a deposit on a Pro4X the day after they announce it.

I’m the original owner of my 2012 Xterra P4X. At present it has over 110k miles and is my daily driver. It has seen multiple long (2000 mile+) road trips, dozens of 4 wheeling trips in the Rockies, too many ski trips to count, two small children, and so on. The only “fix” I’ve done on it that wasn’t a direct result of my abusing it on the trails were the valve cover gaskets. The Xterra is tough and reliable. I’ve abused the you know what out of mine and I still trust it to get me to/from work every day. Awesome rig!

That's awesome. I just hit 329K on mine. What type of shocks and struts are you using? I don't do any rock crawling or anything. Lots of beach trips, long hauls, and a ton of inner city road dips, bumps, and some unavoidable potholes that are 5 inches deep. Any suggestions?
@dustoffer98702 жыл бұрын
@@mikekelsch1662 in my opinion, the factory shocks are just fine for what it sounds like you encounter in your driving if you like how they felt when new is just stick with that. If you want an easy and relatively inexpensive, upgrade I enjoy the Bilstein 5100s. There’s plenty of other good options and opinions out there too. Be safe out there!

This is my go-to channel for learning about my 2010 Off Road. I’ve only had to do regular maintenance. Right now job list includes front/side airbag sensors that are apparently a bad design that rots them out. Also the parking brake needs overhaul - I’ve tightened it as much as possible, but doesn’t hold. Last is something in the front right suspension that I’ve had done once already but is squeaking horribly again.

Bought a 2006 Xterra used with 72K on it and now have 214K with zero issues, but I have always maintained it. Always had all the fluids flushed or changed at manufactures recommended schedule. The only thing that messed up on it was the fuel sending unit and it only cost $140 for a mechanic to change it out and gasket on the oil cooler for $89 to change out. All the parts are still the original from factory, starter, throttle body, radiator, all pulleys and A/C. I just recently changed the alternator and valve covers, and it runs like new still. Oh, and I changed the spark plugs at 104K. The best engine and transmission I ever owned, just do the recommended fluid changes and it will be fine. And the reason for the timing belt whinnying sound on the Xterra's and Frontier's is because the oil changes were not kept up. The oil is the lubricant for the plastic guides that the chain runs along on. And when the oil is dirty it acts like sand paper against plastic and wears it down and that's what causes the noise.

One key thing here is that you have the manual transmission, which avoids a huge problem with the Xterra/Frontier automatics; coolant and oil mixing causing radiator and tranny to be destroyed. Because of this issue, I feel like these models got a bad name, but the problem is EASILY avoided with the bypass technique. Well, I guess the tension guides suck too, but at least those can last quite some time before causing an actual issue (the guy with the million mile Frontier had 700,000 miles on his truck before they replaced the timing chain as "preventative maintenance"). That being said, I really enjoy your videos and they have honestly helped me immensely on servicing my 2005 Frontier over the years. Almost at 185,000 miles so keep up the good work Ry!

Yes sir your videos are awesome! I have an 07 Xterra and I'm the original owner. I've got the timing chain whine still. But I have replaced the cam sensors, driver window motor, radiator, lift gate arms, the fuel float arm in the fuel sending unit, and just last weekend the rear shocks. Got 254k miles on it and it still gets me where I need to go. Two problems I have right now is its throwing a code P0171 when its really hot outside. It loses its pickup so Im guessing its either the bank sensor or the cats need to get replaced. Which at that mileage they are past due. lol. My other problem is the condenser fan not running. When I come to a redlight and sit for a few, it will start to run really hot. If I put it in neutral and push on the gas the temp goes down. I ran the test you showed that tests all the major components when you turn the key on, and the condenser fan doesn't turn on unless I give it a push. Anyways thanks Ry for the videos.

1 owner '07 X Off Road 6 speed with about 180k miles. I've driven it all over the US and up and down Mexico and wheeled it hard for most of its life in Colorado. I've had to do pretty much the same stuff as you. Here's a list of the stuff I've had to actually fix: 1. Timing Chain guides at about 80k. Nissan paid for about a 1/3 of it in the class action settlement. 2. Fuel pump level sender went bad (under warranty at about 20k miles) 3. Clock spring at about 150k, the cruise stopped working 4. Turn signal stalk at the same time, the auto cancel stopped working on left turns, it was a little flakey from new. 5. Rear hatch struts, on the 2nd replacement set now. 6. Windshield washer pump. Not the tank, just the pump. 7. Driver window actuator motor 8. 1 cat. Dropped a coil in the middle of nowhere Mexico. Had to drive on 5 cylinders a ways to get to a parts store. Fouled a cat. 9. T-case actuator. The jackwagon that did my clutch didn't reconnect the T-case breather and the actuator filled with water and failed. Not the trucks fault. 10. Clutch fork. This one was also the "fault" of the jackwagon that did my clutch. The fork was bent making the clutch make noise and he should have caught it. The bent fork chewed up a brand new JWT clutch in 30k miles. When I had that replaced, the dipshits that did that didn't even grease the fork, much less inspect it, so it chewed up an OEM clutch in like 20k miles. 3rd clutch now, with a new fork, and it's fine. It's fixed now. The fact that the fork bent was the trucks fault, but it should have been caught by the assholes I paid to do the job. Twice. None of that has been "critical." Aggrivating and expensive in the case of the chain and the clutches, yeah. But the truck has never once left me stranded. The only time I've even had to do any parking lot wrenching was the coil. Everything but the clutches, chains, cat and fuel pump I've done myself.

My mechanic couldn’t figure out what it was. I had recently replaced my blower motor and resistor 2 months back. Thought it was the blower motor cuz it seemed over tightened. Front wheel bearing replacement 2x, TPMS within tires died a few years ago, Very small evap leak code comes up every once in awile despite evap solenoid replacement 2x, side door locks seize up because of lubrication issue within door, hatch window wiper motor armature seized up, undetermined leakage in rear hatch that rotted out bottom of door and contributed to seizing the hatch door lock, one portion of rear leaf spring cracked and dropped off, crank shaft sensor died, water pump died (repair shop did job and put in a water pump for the wrong Nissan) cost me $$$$. Oil pan, rear diff cover and transmission lines rotted out and had leaks. Front windshield had a leak causing damage to passenger floor pan. Did not want to experience SMOD so I bypassed transmission lines from radiator and installed a separate transmission cooler. So besides that, everything is fine.

@@Rythecarguy yup, passengers side. Both the inlet and outlet from the heater core have these plastic fittings that tend to crack with age. The inlet piece can just be removed and attached directly to the heater core (heard it had something to do with the pathfinders rear heat system), but I opted to replace both with new metal parts since if the inlet piece broke it was probably only a matter of time before the other one went.

Things that have broken on my 2002 Nissan Xterra (220k miles)... Distributor, starter, intake temperature sensor, fuel tank (rust hole), brake line (more rust), muffler (rust), charcoal evap canister (overfilled gas tank), leaking valve cover gaskets, leaking oil pan gasket (haven't fixed yet... really slow leak)

forgot to mention my cracked exhaust manifolds... rocking the ebay headers now.

I repainted all the plastics on my xterra as well but I broke 90% of the tabs across the board. I ended up super gluing them back into place but that just means I cant ever remove them again unless I replace all of them 🤦🏽♂️ it is what it is I guess😡

Oh man, sorry to hear that. What tabs are you referring to?

I talk about that my top 5 issues with the Xterra video. This video is about what’s gone on with my specific Xterra. I have a manual and SMOD is not a thing with manuals.

Add me to the Thinking About Buying an X and did so Because Your Channel Existed category in your spreadsheet. Knowing a resource is out there is a big reassurance that if something common goes wrong I have something to consider is a big deal. I have owned lots of older high-miles vehicles. I diy on small stuff. IaNAM . Thank you and please keep your X.

Interesting video. One would have to have an extremely simplistic view of things to think that the X is issue prone due to viewing your 'content'. Just sayin.
