Wow! Nice work on the dress shirt! Your precise details made the lines all line up and it looks amazing! Great fabric choice! I agree about taking out the front pockets,..making the shirt sag or extra bulky wouldn’t have been nice. Love the crisp, clean look!! 😍

Hi Cath 👋 I’m a bit late watching this week ! My goodness, hasn’t your Paper Theory shirt turned out well ? You must be delighted. It obviously took a lot of patience to work through the fiddly bits. Well done you ! I love to see your children’s projects whether it’s dolls’ dresses or cute knitted items, what a lovely mummy you are 😊 You ask what we’re all sewing, so, I’m in the middle of another Lyra for the summer, in some very pretty fabric from a Beyond the Pink Door subscription box a while back. I have also cut also out a shirt for my husband using the McCalls M 6044, which is tried and tested and always looks nice and fits well. Have a good week Cath 😊xx

Hi Shelly, thanks so much, I’m really pleased with how the shirt turned out, I’m definitely glad I took time on it. A Lyra for summer sounds lovely - it’s not a pattern I’ve tried yet but I’d like to. Hope you enjoy sewing it and the shirt for your husband too. Hope you have a lovely week too 🥰xx

i really love that slip dress and think it looks great with the turtle neck...i hear you about the straps...you can either zigzag/straight stitch along length and they will lose some of the stretch and for your next just interface or do a decorative stitch. i do that to my belts on wrap dresses that are continuous with neck band...they always stretch out to past my knees lol

Maybe bind the dress with the fabric on the bias, then add the straps separately cut on the grain?

Thank you Cath. Your children must love having such a talented Mummy. Your Olya shirt is fabulous. An Ogden hack dress with the floral fabric would be great, you could have horizontal flowers on the top and vertical floral stripes on the gathered skirt.

I love your Olya shirt! You did a fantastic job. I think shorts with the leftover striped fabric would be great. The striped shirt and matching shorts co-ord set was very on trend last summer and may be again, and if not, you can wear them separately. I know what you mean about sometimes finding the second piece feels like an afterthought and doesn't get as much wear, but this fabric is so lovely and classic that it's not like it would be with a very distinctive, say floral, pattern. They'd be so cute as PJs/loungewear if nothing else. I'd use any elastic waist trouser pattern you have that you like the fit of, like the Saguaro or Safiya. You could play with the stripe direction on the waistband or pocket facings, maybe adding cuffs, etc.

Thank you very much re the Olya shirt! That’s a really good point about the fabric being more classic than a distinctive print, thank you so much for your thoughts on it 😊

Your shirt choices were spot on. I know exactly what you mean about the interfacing on the button placket when you tuck in. I wonder if your daughter would wear the striped leftovers as either a slip style dress, overall style shorts or simple elastic waist pants for summer? Your dolls' clothes have turned out wonderfully. I can see an entire wardrobe in their future.

I like to use leftover fabric to make a quick-to-sew Elizabeth Suzann Georgia top. Even if I feel like I’m just using up the fabric for the sake of not stashing it, my Georgias get a lot of wear because they’re light and airy and easy to layer. They’re also great for vacation since they look smart and don’t take up a lot of valuable suitcase space.

I love the shirt Cathy , I agree with the interfacings. It would make it too stiff to do both sides. Re the left over piece , I feel like you do , if it is left over and make something I else I just know I wouldn't wear it. The floral piece maybe make a summer dress with the pattern side ways on the full skirt and a top with pattern down ways. Myself this week I've made Kwiksew pyjamas in a cotton linen mix they turned out well. I have discovered how to use my one step button hole tool. Oh how great that is. Enjoy your weekend. Love the dog too. 😊

Beautiful makes, as always, Cath. Thanks for sharing your Freya tweaks, that's very helpful and I look forward to learning your hem tricks too! I was thinking the same as a few others - the linen would be lovely as shorts for you or a dress/romper for your daughter. It could also work well as a tote bag! The floral would be lovely as a summer dress - horizontal on the skirt and vertical on the bodice could be fun!

The Helens closet orchard top/dress has bias bound armholes and straps similar to the saltwater, and it has some interfacing added to the strap part to reinforce it

Really nice stripey shirt. I see the extra stripe fabric as paper bag shorts, which you can wear separately from shirt as well as together. The floral fabric would look nice with the stripes going vertical, and maybe you could wear together with shirt you already made in that pattern.

Regarding the straps on the salt-whistle that stretches out, I wander if some interfacing to a section of the strap, like in the Orchid slip dress from Helen’s Closet, may help out for your next make, and do away with those finicky lingerie rings that always slide out on me. Only the section of the strap that goes over the shoulder is interfaced, leaving the part of the bias binding that goes under arm and connected to the dress, not interfaced. This prevents stretching. Because you’ve made one, you can measure out the straps for your next make. It looks lovely on you though, love the fabric😊
@madebycathcraft7 ай бұрын
Thank you very much, I think some interfacing on that section of the binding is a great idea. I definitely will do it differently next time 😊

I just received my lovely stripe fabric from Joel & Son and wondered what I should make with it when I saw your shirt and liked it straight away. I don't have the exact pattern, however I have a shirt pattern which I can alter. My plan is to cut the front and back piece where your pockets would have been and this way will have stripes running horizontally as opposed to the bottom piece. Then do away with the seam joining sleeve and the fronts and back and have one long continuous piece. I don't know if this piece is shaped or just slightly narrowed at the bottom where cuffs will be attached later. I think it will work, I'll try it first with a different fabric. Don't want to buy more patterns when I have loads already. Thanks for the inspiration.

Hello Cath, I’ve made the saltwater slip quite a lot now and have left the sliders off as I used thicker linen fabric that wouldn’t go through. As a result I just had the straps exactly the length I wanted without and adjustment option. Has taken a few attempts but think I’ve got it right now as before the straps flopped off my shoulder.
@madebycathcraft7 ай бұрын
That’s a good plan for the saltwater straps. I think I might leave the sliders off for my next version too.
