We're making it a yearly trip to visit New Orleans after going last year for the Zwanzefest release. The owners of Avenue Pub in the Garden District do it yearly. Coffee cake doesn't usually have coffee in it. Some flavours do, but it isn't required. Coffee cake is called that because it's meant to go *alongside* of coffee. Just like tea cake doesn't necessarily have tea in it. It can have fruit or whatever. There are a lot of Danish style coffee cakes available at places like Walmart and such that have fruit and cream cheese. I've made many varieties that have fruit or some type of cheese. I think the crumb topping and a drizzle of icing are pretty traditional, as well as the addition of cinnamon, but you can play with a coffee cake recipe a bit and it will still be considered a coffee cake. One of the best coffee cake recipes I have ever made didn't have any coffee in it. It was a Betty Crocker recipe for a sour cream coffee cake with crumb topping. I haven't had it since I've been vegan but now that I'm thinking about it, I might just have to do some tweaking and have me a vegan Betty Crocker coffee cake.

I am so excited to be here in New Orleans and get to try some of this amazing vegan food they have! Staying two weeks with a friend that moved down here and as fate would have it he just happens to live less than 500 ft from Breads On Oak. I really need to check out that Seed place still, but I have had some amazing food so far. Lebanon's has some absolutely top notch Middle Eastern food. I also had some Vegan Chick'n Shwarma at Tal's Hummus that blew my mind. The B.L.T.A. at Breads On Oak might be my fave, I've had that twice since it's so close. I was also down here during the Carnival season so I was able to get down on their Vegan King Cake that just exploded my taste buds right off. Followed up the morning Mardis Gras parade with some crazy good phở up on Magazine St. This city has already shattered my expectations, and I feel like I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of it.

The croissant you had with almond you had looked very yummy (it was probably puff pastry isn't it? ) and all the other stuff in that café, that quiche and that biscuit looked amazing too! :D and in the other café would have loved to try the mushroom biscuits, i wonder if i would say the same as you that they are not good. the coffee cake also looked good, weird that it wasnt as good as it looked. you did not say anything to the cream cheese brioche! This looked great! how was it? Where do you get the ideas what cafés to visit?

the cream cheese brioche was not good actually. THe pastry / bread part was but the filling was just plain tofutti so it didn't taste homemade. I was expecting a cashew cream inside. I just didn't bother mentioning another negative thing about the food! haha
