Basing our self worth on external validation is a set up for low self esteem and the suppression of expressing our true authentic selves, in order to please others. We lose ourselves in that process. We become addicted to external forms of acceptance.
Maybe it’s time to learn to accept yourself, take a break from the daily scale weigh-ins, body pinching, mirror flexing, excessive workouts, selfie taking, body shaming, and checking of social media likes, hearts, and compliments.
I’m Kayla Rose Kotecki; I like to say I’m a “rebel” Holistic Nutritionist. I have a past of being in-prisoned in the fitness model industry, as well as immersed in Orthorexia, Anorexia, and Bulimia as a result from the Fitness Modeling and Competing lifestyle side-effects, but fortunately have overcome them all reclaiming my life, joy, and health….
Through my journey, I came to discover the thing that would bring me the most health and sanity, was to break free from the arbitrary and dangerous imposed restrictions, rules, dietary limitations, body shaming, and overtraining.
This is how Damn the Diets was created: to help those who wish to live a life of freedom from the fears and guilt around food, exercise and the oppression of body image.
I want to remind people that we don’t have to go to the extremes in order to find health and fitness. There is a lot of misinformation floating around about what health and fitness looks like that only shows the highlights of what goes on within the fitness world.
People are ignorantly following competitors, models and other clean eating / fitness social media accounts without a true sense or heads up of what they’re getting themselves into if they too, follow the harsh diet and exercise regimens. For example, binge eating post dieting, digestive problems, hormonal imbalance, amenorrhea for females, body dysmorphia, control issues, inflexibility, ruined relationships, heart and other organ problems, and so much more.
Health goes so much further than looking aesthetically perfect. True health, self-love and fitness means something that is sustainable for the long term. It comes from finding a balance (your own unique balance) that gives you the freedom to pursue passions, aspirations and opportunities.
Self love and acceptance does not come from having a six pack, fitting into a pair of skinny jeans or the number of compliments you receive from friends, family, or strangers?! Nor does it come from agonizing over whether you hit a caloric deficit, or a certain amount of workouts that week..
Maybe you bought into that nonsense out there that you’re not worthy until you meet these specific standards?
I’m here to tell you, if you’re on this perfection quest, nothing will ever be good enough once you get to that point. You will arrive at this point whether it’s losing weight or perfectly following a “clean” dogmatic diet trend for purity, and you’ll arrive with the same negative and degrading mindset.
Instead, it is wise to work on changing our mindsets, where we’re currently at, without comparison to others around us will help us to find our worth beyond the number on the scale, the calories consumed (or lack of), the body % fat you’re obsessed to hit or whatever the case.
Let me help you learn how to re-develop a healthy relationship with food, exercise and your body!

Hearing you say "I don't know" and "whatever" over and over again when explaining how you eat now is the besssssssst! That's the goal. I love it!

Yay! That's wonderful! I'm so glad you shared this. I've never heard of anyone waking up in the middle of the night and spooning PB other than myself. Thanks again for sharing!

I binged my way to a healthy weight. I felt insane because I couldn't stop eating. I still eat a lot but it has calmed down.

Exactly what I needed to hear today. Thank you! I'm about 1-2 months into fully eating intuitively and I'm glad you pointed it out that it could take months....

This is saving me!!! Thank you for all your posts!!! Went from severe anorexia/orthrexia to “clean” whole food/paleo, then full vegan 🌱. Stuck in “food rules”. Working up courage to introduce eggs, fish, and poultry back into my diet. So hard. But this helps.

I do not know how to explain it but the second you started talking about what you eat now and you couldn’t even think about what to say (like specifics), I got the hugest smile on my face.

This is what recovery looks like. Even weight restored. Never satiated & always eating. You have to go through it but it gets better

im glad that i'm not alone! in my first four weeks my body would crave boatloads of peanut butter, cookies, chocolate, meat, bread . it was so scary and my ED brain would scream at me to stop eating but I was SO HUNGRY. I'd eat all of those and my body would still wake me up in the middle of the night RAVENOUS, magically. After that four week mark, I started craving vegetables and fruit whilst still eating cookies and cakes and whatever whenever I wanted to. I don't wake up in the middle of the night anymore and my body takes me all the way up to 9am, the most i've slept in 2-3 years. my face is still puffy with edema and my stomach is another story but i seem to plateau. ( I haven't weighed myself since recovery a month ago but from the look of my face in the mirror, nothing has changed for two weeks now).Even now, I still have extreme hunger everyday and it might not go away until i give it a few months but, I just naturally start to crave veges and fruits and grains alongside cookies. the hunger is decreasing week by week by week so don't give up, you awesome pineapples.

Wow the beginning is so me right now. The highlight of what I ate today was 2 ciabatta bread sandwiches. 1 ciabatta bread by itself again with spreads, lots of bread and peanut butter with nutella. and also a whole tub of ice cream (that surprised me). but yeah, the reason I’m not eating now is that I am so bloated. Think I will eat again soon though lol. Honestly craving for fried food tomorrow when I wakeup o.O Maybe gonna shop for some cereal too. I know this isn’t forever but its really comforting knowing that this is totally normal. Thank you so much for your videos!

Thank you Kayla! I am recovering from years of dieting and BED in a larger body and it is really scary to experience extreme hunger when you're already at an "overweight BMI". But I try to trust the process and have hope that my appetite will eventually normalize. And I try to learn to appreciate my body for what it does for me no matter what it looks like.

Thank you so much Kayla, I've just binged 😞 I was so hungry I couldn't even think... I think I'm still in the replenishing phase, but really difficult for me... I don't know what I would do without you... ❤️
