James Rath So your kind of like Superman now right??? Don't feel bad I am legally blind as well. 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 Everything looks very blurry most of the time, this is because I also have uveitis along with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. I was actually born with an eye disease called Retinopathy Of Prematurity. The best I have been able to see my entire childhood was colors. I remember that was 1 thing I could see without a problem. 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 I remember going to the eye doctor and having to get my eyes dilated. I hated that part though. Everything on the eye chart at the eye doctor, although it was blurry I could see the giant letters. The front size that was like 20. 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 I have never been able to see at night and I always have to hold someone's hand when I am walking.

I had to use a CC TV as well in highschool. 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 Have you ever tried playing games like hide and seek???? The best part is you would win everytime, but it is truly upsetting because you always have to remember the things you can't do, like driving or getting from your house to Mexican villa in your own. 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 You know you should explain it like this, try looking at something through your elbow. You can't and it just doesn't work like that. 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 That is what most days are like for people who are legally blind.

I was born legally blind as well. I was born with ocular albinism, nystagmus, and strabismus. I have vertical, horizontal and rotational nystagmus. I've dealt with these conditions since the day I was born and knew nothing different up until I was around 20 years old. Growing up anything further than 1 inch from my face was a blur and it wasn't just a slight blur it was huge. I couldn't see anything in school I learned by listening. I didn't use any visual aid tools while going through school as none of them were effective enough to matter because of the degraded extent of my vision . My vision growing up was 20/425 in my good eye and off the charts in my bad eye, they would typically say in my bad eye my vision was worse than 20/800. I accomplished a lot growing up in spite of my vision impairment. I even played baseball one year although I couldn't see the ball much at all and got nearly knocked out I still put forth the effort to play. Things were a blur but when it comes to larger objects I could still see the object just not the details of it. I literally performed nearly every task any other person would do. I wasn't ever going to let my vision hold me back at least as much as possible. Of course there are limitations that you can't avoid being vision-impaired but I did everything I could to not let there be any limitations whatsoever. It was something I had since I was born so I didn't know any different. I could still read although anything I needed to read had to be 1 inch from my face otherwise forget it, so as far as reading materials and books were concerned I was always able to do that I just had to have it extremely close to do so. Anything that was close was very clear I could even see all the little pixels on the page because of my nearsightedness. Life definitely had its challenges growing up however the mental state in which we choose to be is critical in either our success or failure. I chose that no matter what I would not let things get in my way and I would be as normal as possible as every other person was. That's how I chose to see it and because of that Outlook most things in my life were normal and I would often times blow people away by the things I was able to accomplish because I chose not to let this disability get in my way and hinder my success. This video gives a great depiction of what it was like through my eyes. I've always wanted to compile a video to give people a representation of what I could see and how I saw things but haven't ever done so and this video represents it well. When I was 20 I had strabismus surgery which greatly corrected my crossed eyes. Although it did not fully perfect my eyes as far as them being aligned straight goes it was still a huge Improvement. When I was 23 I had a wonderful eye doctor who was willing to take the risk of doing Lasik surgery. I was also willing to have the surgery performed. Technology at that point as far as LASIK surgery is concerned had just reach its point where they had a new technology emerge which could track the eye at many vibrations a second. Due to my vertical, horizontal and rotational nystagmus they weren't sure if the machine would be able to track my eyes to perform the surgery necessary to achieve the goal at hand. It was a risk for sure and there were some unknowns but I was willing to do it, as were they. I had the LASIK surgery performed on both of my eyes with great success! I had no complications whatsoever from LASIK surgery and the machine did a very good job at tracking my eyes. After LASIK surgery my vision went from 20/425 in my good eye and worse than 20/800 in my bad eye to 20/50 in my good eye and 20/70 in my bad eye and after this was completed I no longer fell under the status of being legally blind. My LASIK surgery was performed by a doctor at Southwest Eye Center in Mesa Arizona over 10 years ago. Since that time as far as vision goes it has degraded a little but not much. My vision is currently 20/60 in my good eye and around 20/80 in my bad eye. Due to the Improvement from the surgery I have been able to drive a vehicle for 10 years now which has been a wonderful change in my life that has greatly assisted me. I have been in one accident which was not my fault and it was due to a girl passing me on a double line who then lost control of her car and slid into me. As far as the surgery correcting my vision goes it has improved my ability to see further away. I still have all three forms of nystagmus so my eyes do still shake quite rapidly. It can be a challenge to focus on things to see the detail in them however even though I have this ailment I get by pretty well. Although my ability to see distance has greatly increased I still do have to use the zoom feature on my phone occasionally to see things and most of the time those things would be words. There's a little bit about me my conditions and my life experience. If you'd ever like to connect please let me know. Thanks for sharing this video!

Tyson Capel wow! That is amazing! I also am legally blind due to albinism with nystagmus and I also had surgery for strabismus as a baby. My mother has always been convinced that there would be somewhat of a cure for me and my sister so that we could see much better. I’m so happy to hear that there just might be something that could work for me. Thanks for sharing your story!

La Touya Bailey You can definitely get lasik surgery especially today since there's different methods of doing it. Some people have to thin of a protective membrane to be able to do the type of lasik surgery I had but it's very rare to have such and even if you do they can do lasic surgery through it without cutting it. If they can do it to me they should be able to do it to most everyone that has nystagmus due to how extreme my condition is. Most people don't have all 3 forms of nystagmus. I had the surgery done at Southwestern Eye Center in Mesa Arizona. I don't remember the doctor's name who did it anymore because that was about 12 years ago. Back then it cost me a total of $2000. I believe it costs a little more than that nowadays but it's well worth it. Give it a shot the worst they can do is say no.

Jennifer Trush Exactly I wear glasses and I know everyday with vision impairments gets worse. Or............ at least it does for me anyway. 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 The best I can see is lights and colors. Everything else even with glasses is blurry. I can see faces and pimples on someone's face. I can see the difference between colors like Orange and Green and Red and Blue. I can see every color of the rainbow. But if you have cucumbers and you throw them on the grass, I can't tell where the cucumber is at.

I can’t thank you enough for this video. My son is 5. He has ONH that causes him to have nystagmus and 20/200 vision. He has colobomas in his irises that cause some amount of light blindness. I imagine his vision to be very similar to yours. I found this video years ago and it helped me to understand how he sees, and I shared it with my family and his teachers so people can too. I have been following you since then for tips for my son. I pushed for Braille for him bc of one of your videos, and he started this week! He’s starting video gaming so I’m checking out those videos too. Anyway, I just wanted you to know that your information is as valuable as it is entertaining and makes a difference. Thank you for making these videos as there’s no other way to learn this info unless you have lived it or are seeking it out from other people with a VI. It’s invaluable. U rock!

This is what I see all the time. I have pseudotumor cerebri and my vision is 200/20 on both side but left side is little worse. I'm a high school senior and it's very hard for me to read book and walking. My parents doesnt seem to believe me that I'm legally blind because I act like I watch tv and understand everything. I just follow along the talking and try to understand it and they think that I can see because I walk at my house fine since I know the route. I'm tired of my parents think I'm faking since the doctors doesnt seem to know what I exactly have except pseudotumor cerebri. This is stressful

Hi, James:) I was born with hydrocephalus; it zapped both optic nerves in 2012. The effects started with purple spots in my visual field, but the college medical staff didn't have the right equipment to diagnose me, so I left it alone for about a month. It got gradually darker and more blurry, until I couldn't read a normal book anymore. I didn't know it was the hydro because there was no pain, fever, exhaustion or nausea in all that time. My current vision is like looking at an old, broken tv with heavy snow. Colors are present but kind of washed out. Bright light causes A lot of glare. I can see some outlines but not a lot of details. I have to apologize to people frequently because eye contact is problematic for me. I don't watch a lot of TV anymore but I have my Kindle and my Echo. I tend to absorb media better if it has a lot of dialogue. Movie trailers and commercials with no voices are useless to me. My church is a big help, because they have provided a driver who can take me places when my housemates are working. I walk down my block and back almost every day, sometimes twice a day. COVID has limited the neighbors I talk to, but about half of them don't speak English, so they avoid me. It's a quiet life, but it's a life.

Hi James! While I do not have the same eye condition, I have aniridia, I can definitely relate!! I see the world pretty similar to what you are describing, except that I have to get much closer. LOL I love that huge Rubik's cube! I just take pictures of everything using my phone and then I can put the phone as close as I need to which is 1 inch away from my eye or less, and zoom in as much as I need to. The production and editing of this is amazing and you are such an inspiration! 👍

I think you should add more shake to the Nystagmus because i personally have nystagmus and the eye wobble is worse than you make it appear in your editing, or maybe thats just me idk.
@jamesrath7 жыл бұрын
I typically edit the Nystagmus myself but have been working on multiple projects so I did pass this video off to an editor with my supervision. I think it portrays how I see very accurately but I will say if I did edit this the Nystagmus (at least in my case) would appear faster towards the end of the day to show that the more strain my eyes are the less vision I have. Again we all see differently, even with the same ocular disorders. I think this video does my vision justice though.

I'm really stupid and this is not suppose to be a mean question by any means: The way you describe how you see is exactly what i feel, but the glasses I have correct it all, even eye contacts. Have you looked into this?
@jamesrath6 жыл бұрын
Hey, no worries! It's a general question. Understand when someone is "legally blind" it just means that glasses and contacts can't help them see any better than the first line or "E" on an eye chart (20/200). My blindness is due to my retinas being underdeveloped and thinner than the average person and thus glasses with their small magnification can't do anything. Thanks for watching!

Consult your eye doctors as frequent as you can with updates. There are plenty of resources available if you are experiencing sight loss. Luckily many consoles these days are also getting better at providing accessibility, Switch has a universal Zoom, as well as PS4, and XBOX. It can be a lifestyle adjustment for sure, but life goes on and can still be enjoyable to it's fullest.

While I have always been photophobic, I was in an auto accident in 2001 and ever since the lights have been dimming. I have tunnel vision, nystagmus, 20/250 bi-ocellary, no depth perception, headaches, night vision, haze, and kaleidoscopic shine around lights, and recently I discovered bang on center of my right eye I see nothing. Not black, or shadow just a non color nothing not big. but It is, and is not there if that follows. Thanks I will show this to fam to help them understand.

Yeah I'm the complete opposite I don't have any prepping his vision and I just have central vision and I'm totally blind at night but that's interesting that you can or you can't see the stuff that I could no pun intended but those pretty interesting I kind of got what you were saying or I really got what you were saying

This video was very interesting. People always wonder what I can and can’t see as a fellow visually impaired person. I love your videos and I will continue to love them. I have my own channel and you are the inspiration of why I started the channel though I have a disability.

How do you become ilegally blind?
@jamesrath3 жыл бұрын
You walk into a government building, ask for benefits for blind people and pretend to be blind. That is how you become "illegally blind". Hope that helps. 😎

I know it can be scary, the unknown, but believe me, it's not the end of the world. There's still so much you can do and achieve with or without sight. I hope my channel can give you a bit of insight and resources. There's videos on how to enjoy movies even if your blind, learning things like surfing, and how to ski. There's always a strong community as well that's here for you!
