I'm in a wheelchair and I was sitting with this other chick in a wheelchair at church and the pastor came up to us and said "What's going on with your legs?" . Being the witty person I am I quickly said "Well it looks to me they are just hanging there :P " It was the first time someones asked "whats gong on with them or what are they doing" so that was funny. Great video. Thanks for doing a tag lol

I am hard of hearing, and I one-hundred percent relate to the "there's a spectrum" comment. Hearing people tend not to realize that hearing isn't a two-mode thing. There's a whole lot more than "on" and "off", and I'm kinda in the fuzzy grey area, too. So I definitely feel it.

I am so incredibly happy I stumbled across your channel. You have such an amazing outlook on life and your positivity is seriously infectious. I find myself (in a non-creepy way) smiling while I watch your videos! I actually stumbled upon your channel researching for my first novel where my main character is visually impaired. I've gained so much positive knowledge watching you. Myself, I am sighted. However, I was born with a cataract in my left eye and went through 3 major eye surgeries as a child. I'm at high risk for glaucoma even being 25, and I always found myself being down about my poor vision or fearful about what the future holds for my vision. You genuinely give me comfort in the fact that you continue to live passionately and positively, doing things that you love. Keep doing what you're doing!

Well dang. Learn something new every day. I found out that my constant blurry vision is from Keratoconus...at least three different optometrists completely ignored the indicators that I kept mentioning. And you just solved the issue I have with my eyes involuntarily and rapidly darting back and forth occasionally. It's rare for me, just for a few seconds and maybe once a month, but it happens. I just close my eyes and wait for the movement to stop. Nystagmus. It's good to put a name to things at least.
@jrbdtx8 жыл бұрын
+James Rath the problem is, the first three didn't seem to care when I said I was still seeing ghost images of the letters all round them. And it's not like I went from one to another...this was over a period of a few years. My prescription kept changing over time.
@jrbdtx8 жыл бұрын
+James Rath I got the topography done. My left eye is over 20/200 without correction, the cornea is wrinkled directly in the middle of my pupil. The right eye is a little better than 20/200, not quite 20/100 uncorrected though. The pest prescription they could come up with puts me at 20/100, 20/70. So we tried fitting scleral lenses. Just the diagnostic lenses, no correction added and I was able to make out some of the letters on the 20/20 line! They were still blurry, but woah dang, there were little dots on ceiling tiles, I could see individual fiber bundles in the carpet...I'll get my permanent pair in a few weeks. I'm so excited I could do a backflip. If that wouldn't break me in half.

James, so glad I found your channel. I'm also in that gray area where my vision and hearing issues aren't always apparent to other people. Your videos are really opening me up to the use of vision technology in my daily life. Yesterday, I used the Magnifier app for the first time when I was at the DMV getting an ID card, and they only had a video screen set up to call people to the service desks. For me, the numbers 3,6,8,9, and 0 are basically the same shape ( I was 386, so I was starting to sweat). It was too crowded to sit closer to the screen, but instead of stressing out, I remembered to use the app on my iPad like you had shown in your videos. Thanks! Here is a question for you. I'm finding it easier to read digital media using fonts designed for people with dyslexia. Is that anything you have tried or know of other people doing? (large point sizes, of course)

I am visually impaired, however, I do see out of my right eye. My visual fields are very low, I do not have any depth perception or peripheral vision. I am blind in my left eye , I have a cane, I've had 3 jobs. One job I had told them prior to getting the job that I am visually impaired. I did not think it would be an issue , but sometimes it was. One of the workers just looked me up and down and said "oh you're using ....that thing..." like it was just more of a burden on them that I used my cane at work after not using it while working and walking into wracks and people and so on and so forth . I've had workers who were older than me and my other co workers just seem annoyed by my disability. I get told I don't look "blind enough" or that I don't actually need a cane. I would not have a cane or services from the state if I was not, In fact , visually impaired. Your videos to me make me laugh and I am so glad I've found your channel . Thank you so much for spreading awareness to something that most people don't care to understand or learn about .

Hey James, I recently saw my Neurologist and we were discussing my Nystagmus and vertigo and if they were related or worsened each other, and he said "No". The brain is causing the symptoms, the symptoms don't affect each other. You mentioned your nystagmus was really bad the day you were in that huge crowd. Do you notice it gets worse with stress? I have a form of nystagmus when I look at objects in my peripherals (far left and right). It's weird cause I try to look at something to the side and then my eyes start shaking. It's more annoying than anything, and it seems to switch between eyes. One day it won't happen in my left eye, but it will happen in my right. And sometimes it'll happen in both. I'm pretty sure it's nystagmus. At least that's what my doctor said.

Just wanted to say.. thanks. Ive been struggling lately because i recently had a downward shift in my one good eye where the anterior chamber implant lens in my eye has slipped causing some shadowy double vision. I have a failed cornea transplant in my left eye and have light and dark in that eye so my right eye has been pretty important.. my biggest concerns are that currently im the "bread winner" for my husband and daughter if i lose my right eye iono whats gunna happen financially.. my second biggest fear is being a burden on my family.. i know they dont feel like i ever would be but its hard keeping myself from feeling that way.. as it is watching your vid you talk about a grey area where not fully blind but not fully sighted and i kinda feel you like unless people look close they dont notice my cloudy left eye but in turn it doesnt notice shit on that side either lol. Anyway i feel ya in the grey area. Also your inspirational advice about going blind.. and your experience as a child.. not to say im miraculously over my fears but its good to be reminded that my life wont be over when it happens.. so.. long comment but in short. Ty for this. Truely.

Hello I am Sam , I'm so happy to find other people out there that have the same issue as me yes I'm also a VIP and have been since childhood I was born with congenital nystagmus so my eyes do the dancing thing too the Stag winces essentially a neurological defect not so much an eye condition however the eye conditions that I do have our glaucoma astigmatism in myopia. That's quite a package isn't it? I think so due to the glaucoma I have a fairly restricted visual field so I don't do well in crowds either I'm sort of in that gray area also where I don't look visually impaired but I actually am never really used a white cane most of my life but recently have considered I'm starting to use one also at night and sometimes during the day. Did you just run out and buy cane and start using it or did you have orientation and Mobility training to learn how to use a cane? I want to say from about fifth grade all of the high school I have received orientation and Mobility training I was introduced to the white cane but was never really fully trained on how to use it I am familiar with the techniques so I don't know if I would actually require training or if I could just start using it I would like to use it specifically in crowds since my visual field as restricted I will bump into people and objects when they are in my immediate surroundings I can see somebody when they're coming up to me but once they're close enough to me and they leave my visual field I no longer know that they're there the frustrating thing is when I've actually job my elbow into somebody's stomach or better yet into a girl's breasts and they turn around and think I'm just some ass-whole which I'm not I just didn't see her. Another issue I have is with children particular little kids that are less than 4 ft tall I've knocked over so many kids because I just don't see them that I get that ugly reaction from the parents I tell him I'm visually impaired it's like they roll their eyes I don't believe me. there anyway great video thanks for sharing. Oh by the way I also cannot drive either my Visions just not good enough for that I agree with you when drivers can be such idiots they don't take precaution for pedestrians where are there they're visually impaired or not I live in a fairly small community and we have a lot of idiot drivers here too a lot of them on their cell phones and not even paid attention to the road
@jamesrath7 жыл бұрын
I learned how to use a cane on my own and with tips from friends. I have had orientation and mobility but it was more mainstream and not cane focused.
@bluetech77537 жыл бұрын
James Rath exactly see that was my Mobility training as well I'm from 5th grade pretty much on after the 10th grade it was all more on using monoculars to read street signs using a sighted guide whenever I needed one crossing streets learning the different types of intersections how to get around in the grocery store and asking for help if I needed help also using magnifiers and the other visual aids when needed that was pretty much my orientation and Mobility training there it wasn't too cane focused either like I said I was introduced to the white king but never fully trained I guess they didn't think I needed it back then or maybe it was an option or I could use it or not back in my high school days you couldn't picture me using a white cane cuz I did not want to be the legally blind guy I was already at Target for bullies as it is much less the white cane which would really make me stand out here I am 48 years old stumbling and tripping a lot which is not good where I am considering the use of a white cane now I guess I could learn to use it on my own I remember the techniques I just never used them but probably with some help from other friends and maybe here on KZbin I could probably do it on my own I'll give it a shot.

Worked for blind Law Professor McCallum Syd. Uni. Will probably meet VIP's in daily life and work, want to know how to interact without offending them. Made mistake last night in dark when walking to shop of talking to a child with glasses and a dog on a harness. Didn't immediately realise he was VIP. Forgot to add. Technology rocks. Scanners, tablets with Google Maps Offline that tell you where to go, talking mp3 books, etc. Though not visibly disabled, it is amazing how different people treat you if you use a cane. In my case though for osteoarthritis in hip pain flareups. What I would like to do to people who push blind people out of the way is unspeakable or would not be published here.
