Your dermatology advise is priceless and your practical insights in different aspects of being a mother are a precious to me too (as a mom sometime in the near future, I hope!) I usually watch your videos while I do my night skincare routine - it's my Me time and your calm, positive demeanour and pleasant voice only help me to de-stress! Not to get too personal but could you discuss balancing work and new motherhood? Do you use a daycare? Mom guilt about going back to work? How do you handle the exhaustion? My husband and I are contemplating having a child and knowing that I am not made to be a SAHM makes me hesitant. Thanks!
@chrisholzhauer36982 жыл бұрын
Good question! I'd like to say that whatever you choose- don't let anyone make you feel bad about your choice! Family, friends, strangers - they have no right to criticize your future family decision. I've found moms (and dads) feel guilty regardless. That's ok, you're human. What matters most is what's best for you, your spouse and your kiddo(s). Happy, healthy well loved kids come from homes with sahms AND working mons. Best of luck to you and your family! Tip: build a robust support system asap. Whether you have family or not, friends, neighbors, coworkers, support groups, etc are the best thing to help! You and your family will thrive when you ask for help and support from the right people! And remember this when you meet new parents (any parents)! We all need support and community! Take care. -fellow mom and someone who cares about you!

First of all, as a fellow millennial doctor, I just want to say thank you for keeping things real with your IG and youtube posts! There are so many times when I get stressed about work/life balance. Making healthy choices most of the time is tough but important. And the work chocolate drawer is a must visit daily! I will be having my first child soon (all of your videos on Theo and being a new mom have been a real treat) and I am worried about being away for so long during the day...how do you handle childcare? Does your husband work from home/take care of Theo during the day or do you have a babysitter/nanny/daycare? Do you work different hours/days? Thanks!!
@DrSamEllis2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! And huge congratulations!! Right now my husband watches him but starting soon we will have a full time nanny. It’s definitely hard being away from him during the day because I miss him SO much. My advice to you would be to take as much maternity leave as you can, and then see if you can return to work on some type of part-time schedule. I slowly added clinic days back in and I kept an extra admin day to spend with Theo. So many of my physician colleagues gave me the advice to not sacrifice time with your baby just for work, as many regret spending so much time away from their child in the early years. Everyone’s job allows them to approach this differently, but that’s sort of the perspective I’ve based my decisions off of.

Thanks for sharing what you eat in a day. I am not a mum, but we're always busy with work, language classes (because we love learning new languages) and whatever else, so my husband and I usually prep our lunch meals and afternoon snacks (I love dates too, so I make energy balls and vegan fudge) in the weekend for the week ahead. I have noticed this keeps us healthy and we get to eat versatile and delicious food. I know some people think it's not versatile if you eat the same thing 5 times a week, but our dinners vary and are usually something easy to prepare. Every week we prepare something different for our work week lunches. Honestly, nowadays even salads can be so varied 🥗 When you said you eat pre-packed salads, I though you meant you go to a coffee shop or a supermarket where these are chopped and boxed on the day. I am not sure how any nutrients are still available in a chopped and packaged salad like yours as it seems this can last forever. Do you know what the trick is? When it comes to evenings I am like you: I need something sweet. I don't call it a dessert but an indulgent snack as it doesn't usually include any added sugar. I used to be addicted to chocolate with nuts, so now my go-to evening snack is banana with nut butter (without any sugar or palm oil added, just nuts and maybe a pinch of sea salt). I alternate with other fruits and sometimes I have nuts, rather than nut butter. I love the sweet and salty combination with some crunch 😋
