Biology major to the rescue: to the untrained eye yams and sweet potatoes are the same, in color and taste for the most part. However, they are in fact two different species of plants; yams are monocots and sweet potatoes are dicots (which refers to the number of embryonic budding leaves). Between the two plans there are vastly different nutritional values of vitamins and minerals (yams are low in a but high in c and such). Additionally monocots differ from dicots in plant structures like leaf shape/vascularity and number of petals on flower multiples of 3 vs 4 or 5 respectfully (yams have 6 sweet potatoes have 5). You can also tell from observing the structure of the xylem water transport and phloem sugar transport tubes inside the tubers themselves. Have fun with the knowledge!

I am confident in saying that they are both sweet potatoes. Yams are pretty white or purple in color, but sweet potatoes can be white, purple, or orange. What these most likely are sold as are jewel, garnet, or Beauregard yams (I’m guessing jewel based on skin color), which are really just sweet potatoes that have had there names confused as a result of American agricultural marketing over time. You will know yams when you eat them base on the texture: dry and very starchy. These white ones are most likely marketed as sweet potatoes only because I don’t think any white variety sweet potatoes lost their naming conventions. Which also explains why Derek is corrected on the orange ones.

I love the tumeric and pepper combo idea. I'm going to add that to my meals! I also use the flax meal which has good omega-3 content. I also use chia seeds. I now add tomato sauce with some avocado to my black beans and brown rice foundation. The tomato sauce has lycopenes. You do NOT get lycopenes from uncooked tomatoes! Lycopenes are one of the strongest free radical molecule scavengers. Free radical molecules wreak havoc by altering all kinds of cellular molecules including DNA. Studies have shown reduced risk for cancer with higher lycopene absorption. However, lycopenes are fat soluble and need some fat to allow for adequate absorption, thus the avocado. Add some high ranked ANDI score vegetables and you have a great meal.

Orange is the sweet potato the yam is white... when I lived down south sometimes we would refer to them as yams when in fact they were sweet potatoes and when I first had African yams that's when I knew the difference because my ex-wife used to cook them three times a week because she knew I loved them so much...they were not as sweet as the sweet potato but when she pounded yam into fufu (futu banan) and made some maffé(lamb in a peanut based gravy) the yams were lovely...of course you could use tofu instead of lamb for a truly vegan african dish.

That sweet, orange-colored root vegetable that you love so dearly is actually a sweet potato. Yes, all so-called “yams” are in fact sweet potatoes. Most people think that long, red-skinned sweet potatoes are yams, but they really are just one of many varieties of sweet potatoes. On a side note, chipotle & paprika both add bitterness, I only know this from making chili

So Sweet potatoes are exactly what they say they are.. sweet potatoes. It tends to be a culinary blanket term for any potato that is sweet. Many markets will have "sweet potatoes", purple sweet potatoes, yams, and more. the sweet potatoes tend to be their own variety as well and have a lighter orange skin than yams, they tend to be sweeter and less starchy. however many places will mix them so it can be difficult to tell sometimes. sweet potatoes tend to have more vitamins but other than that they are pretty similar. hope that helps!
@yaggayaggaya99185 жыл бұрын
You can call them yams or sweet potato, it depends on your location. I’m Nigerian so in Western African yams are a lot bigger, white flesh tubers which look similar to cassava (or yuca/manioc as Latinos and French people would call them). The smaller white yam you have on your plate is, if I’m not mistaken, Japanese yam.

Struan 1210 I know you didn’t ask me but I’m at least a nutrition student 🤷♀️ but honestly my best advice would just be more higher calorie foods instead of the core being something like nonstarchy and or green veg. That’s a very healthful way to eat but it does promote more weight loss. More nuts, seeds, nut butters, beans, sort of heartier things. Not that you have to have super dense meals, you should always try to get in as much nutrition to nourish your body as much as possible. Hope this could’ve helped. Good luck to you.

Very simply, that food looked awesome! And the miso/avocado/mustard base for the sandwich is something that I will try tomorrow. Thanks!

Here in Brazil, we have 3 colors of sweet potatos, white, purple (most common and cheap) and the same orange one! Yeah, we called these orange veggies sweet potatoes too.

Santa Rosa brand makes 100% pure lemon & lime juice, sold in glass bottles. Contains no preservatives. Last longer than fresh citrus. Fresh citrus can also be preserved by submerging in bowl/jar, covered in water.
