I lost 50 lbs. using the same approach: no grains or root vegetables, and absolutely no sugar, while rules out all American processed foods, even salad dressings and mayonnaise (these are disgusting with all the sugar they put in them here). I also take a brisk, uphill daily walk, 5-6 days per week. I didn’t “give up” any food groups, either, I even eat lots of full-fat dairy products. These are healthier than nonfat, which raises the blood sugar astronomically. Protein and fat help keep blood sugar level steady. This middle-age weight gain is an insulin/blood sugar management problem, fats are not the problem. I also only eat from about 9-10 am to 5 pm, as I always did. Flexibility is really important, though, when I go out to a restaurant, I order whatever I feel like, including desert. It’s only every few months, what matters is the daily home diet, and work hours, if not retired. You look great, Maria!

Thanks Maria. I started a very similar diet myself last September. I have lost 3 stone 4lbs so far and I feel wonderful. I am full from the food I eat and satisfied and also enjoy everything I eat. Its just a matter of doing research and finding what works for you personally because different things work for people. I enjoyed watching and will subscribe as this has been very informative. ❤

Very interesting video Maria, thank you. I've just started low carb and intermittent fasting. In two weeks I have lost 8lbs. I have another 15 that I would like to lose. I am so far finding it very manageable, I'm able to adapt a good many of our family meals to suit me. I don't know what my cholesterol level was before I started but can only imagine it was high, as I know I was eating badly. You're looking so well, so I hope I have similar results by following this new lifestyle. 🙂

That sounds brilliant. Keep it up 👍 you do need cholesterol as I’m learning and as long as you are reducing weight and getting movement cholesterol is actually good for the brain. My triglycerides and blood pressure have gone down and that’s a much better measure than cholesterol x

Thank you for this. We have increased our protein and at last getting results. Really enjoying our fruit yoghurt and nut bowls too. We didn't eat unhealthily but we didn't have enough protein.😊

Vegetables are good especially things like broccoli which I eat a lot. It’s just potatoes and starchy foods like pasta, rice and bread, I have cauliflower rice instead 👍

I tend to get foot cramps, and magnesium is great for stopping or preventing those. Electrolyte replacement, along with tons of pure water, is important in our hot, dry California summers, but I won’t drink those horrible drinks like Gatorade. Our Mom was a healthy-food pioneer and we didn’t consume things like snacks or soda pop, so I never developed a taste for those sugary drinks. She would make us occasional home-baked treats, but we didn’t eat processed snack foods like candy, chips (crisps) or cookies like the younger generations do. Fruit juice isn’t much better, either, water is best.

LMNT is a great electrolyte replacement. And lots of water. Now add bd then I get foot cramps but not as often. Cheers

Hi, Maria...I have been a fan and have subscribed to several of your services over the years. I'm now interested in the curry recipe mentioned in the video and thought you had mentioned the link would be in this section. Did I miss it, or is it only for people subscribing to The Style Lounge? Congratulations on finding an approach to eating that you like and that works for you! Thanks so much for all the information.

It's extra difficult for me because I"m allergic to seafood, nuts, and dairy. So, my protein sources are rather limited. Plant based protein does not satiate me enough and I'm often feeling hungry. I use the dark chocolate as an appetite suppressant as well as a treat after a meal.

I’m mainly plant based although I do sometimes have chicken. I make lentil soup, hummus with salad and Avacado, veggie curry and bean chilli. You probably already know that fibre and healthy fats tend to fill you up so I add them to every meal even if it’s just a little bit of olive oil. I drink lots of water and add coconut milk to coffee.

Nuts have a super-healthy balance of fat, protein and high-fiber carbs. They make a great snack, or “dessert” especially with some lower-sugar fruits like berries. The fats they contain are beneficial to health, unlike some of the seed oils like Canola oil, which are suspected of causing more weight gain and undesirable lipids. Current research will tell us more, but avocados, and nut and olive oils are beneficial to health. My daily dessert is a pint basket of fresh blueberries, expensive but worth it! Berries are relatively low-sugar, high-fiber fruits and are packed with nutrients. I don’t put any limits on the fresh fruit I eat, except that I don’t eat bananas, because I don’t like them that much. I’m 64, 5’4”/164 cm and 125 lbs./57 kg.
