History repeats itself, first as a tragedy, second as a farce 😑 This video could be chopped up into a million different pieces and could be used to address so many different issues but I used slavery as the example because it is a fresh wound. The broader issue/fear that I have regarding moving back to Florida is the increase in hateful support and divisiveness I see. The proactiveness I see from politicians trying to rewrite history, laws, and rules to fit a narrative that is catastrophically harmful to the USA.... While simultaneously gaining support from people that lack the comprehensive ability to understand.

Amen to not growing up in the Florida that people think we live in. I lived almost in the Everglades. It was 5 minutes west from my house. DeSantis is definitely a nut job. BTW US used to be the 3rd best education system in the US. DeSantis totally ruined this. (FL is now 20th) however FL education system definitely isn't worse than TN, MS, AL, LA (not the city. Im talking about the state), WV, KY. Now I came from a fantastic (I really mean fantastic. Our schools were the 5th best public school in the state when I was in school. This was test scores in reading, writing, and arthemtic. We had exchange students from Germany having to work their butts off to get a B, because the advanced courses were difficult). This is what's wrong with our education system. The "rich" schools get excellent education while the middle class and poverty get a shitty education. Ok rant over 😁. My parents had to borrow money from family so we could get a house in the city I grew up in.

A Channel named Vox has released two videos of discussions in which the opposing sides agreed on five or six facts regarding the topic - prior to their discussion, and then they brought up their individual perspectives on these facts in the discussion. To me, it seems like a perfect format for any discussion ever. However, it's only constructive if the facts are facts and not fiction. An attempt to changing history gives me big time shivers. I knew about the map thing, in which the US are represented bigger on maps that they actually are, but have always considered that a minor "tweak". This new thing however... oof...

Regarding "guilt": my mom grew up in Nazi Germany, where her father (my grandfather) felt like he had to join the Nazi party to find work (because non-members had little chance of working). My father grew up in Grand Saline, TX, and his great-grandfather owned two slaves in the 1860's. "White guilt" is bullshit: I needn't feel guilt about the sins, flaws and weaknesses of my forefathers (each of us are responsible for our own sins), but I do need to look history in the face, take responsibility to make sure I am not adding to the suffering and sin in the world, and not try to make these crimes against humanity somehow "pretty". Here is what we CAN DO instead of feeling "guilt": Buy fair trade products, hire immigrants or POC, help others with tutoring, advice, support or money if you can afford it, boycott racist companies, do not work for companies with racist hiring practices, do not work for any organisation that harms humans, animals or the environment. In doing this, you keep yourself from the hell of your ancestors.

growing up in austria in the 70s/80s, i don't feel a certain guilt either. however, the education around WWII was just feeding number to the student. when and where did what happen. but the most important thing was left out and that is the psychology of how to manipulate people. how to create monsters out of innocent people. how things could happen the way they did and how the same mechanisms are being used over the whole world by politicians every day. these kind of psychological games to manipulate the masses where not taught in the school. now AI in social media is playing the same games.

Unfortunately, easy to say, but very hard to do. I am a multi-generational Canadian. My father’s side is pure Icelandic. Would you believe that the Icelandic immigrants and further generations suffered great prejudice in Canada (Manitoba specifically)?? Well, they did! I don’t know why, but unfortunately they did. My father moved to Winnipeg from the Icelandic community centred around Gimli when he was only about 14 years old! He had to work and that is what he came to do. Life was not great in those days. He suffered prejudice - and Then - when he married my mother, She suffered prejudice from his family! Because she Wasn’t Icelandic!! What a world we live in. Love from Canada 🇨🇦. I like to think I don’t have prejudice or pre-conceived ideas but who knows really? I’ve never been put to the test.

I am German and I have always felt the heavy weight of our past. But I won't let anyone fool me into believing it is guilt ( normally it is the far right who says that). It is memory culture, something to be proud of and that is a deeply patriotic process towards a better future. Yes, we all need to look the past in the eye. One can clearly see what happens when you don't. Like Austria and DDR with their " it hadn't been us". Like Russia. It is a recipe for desaster.

Well said. The issue is not whether we should be running around as americans flagellating ourselves and feeling guilty for, lets see,….the long arm of slavery, taking over an entire country from the native Americans, Japanese internment camps following WWII, conducting a verifiably unnessesary war in Viet Nam (it was determined halfway through by the U.S. President and close staff that the war against the Viet Cong was unwinable, yet instead of pulling out the fighting continued for many more years) killing millions of Vietnamese and Americans and maiming almost as many with Napalm across generations of genetically inheritable damage, the list goes on and on. No, on one is requiring todays Americans to feel guilty or responsible for the sins of our ancestors. The crime we increasingly make is promoting the massive country-wide ongoing propaganda campaign of sweeping this all under the rug, and promoting the fairy tale of the United States of America being the fairest, freest, most democratic, most advanced, most morally righteous(???!!) country on the planet, because you know what? GET OUT OF THE COUNTRY AND CHECK IT OUT, WE‘RE NOT! It is horrifying how low we‘ve now sunk, that we are not only allowing those in charge to limit or prevent educating our children-heck, our ADULTS-about the truths in our history, with all its warts, but to justify leaving out all things unpleasant with ridiculous claims like, ‚we dont want our children growing up feeling guilty cos‘ they’re white‘….what? And you think thats doing them a favor, so when they leave their bubble as adults and are confronted with people who received a balanced and critical education, they are shocked to the core to hear that they‘ve been lied to and that their ancestors had been slaveholders, or whatever but this is life people!! Grown up persons can handle bad news, they can deal with unpleasantness, or even great shame for something their country has been involved in which was destructive or inhumane. They learn that life is a mix of good and bad. Welcome to the real and honest world.

That was the best description of guns in America I've ever heard or thought about. I lost a friend to a target shooting accident and I lost a colleague to a drive-by. Yet we survive. I hate guns. I hated finding a 44 caliber "glock?" in the cab of my pickup after lending my truck to a friend. I never took a gun safety class so I'm just nervous around them. In the years of gun safety/marksmanship classes in high schools in America, there were no school shootings. I wonder what would have happened if we'd kept the allure at bay by continuing to offer those classes.

Oh Hayley, can’t you go to University in Canada instead? We’re not perfect by a long shot, but we are finally starting to “own up” to our horrific history with our Indigenous peoples. Residential schools, basically stealing their children to adopt out to white families. This is called “the sixties (1960’s) sweep. The idea was “to take the “Indian” out of them and make them “white “. I live in Manitoba which has the highest percentage of Indigenous peoples of any province or territory in Canada. You still see the results of this horrendous part of our history on our streets. It’s going to take a long time to get to where we should be. And of course there are other racial injustices and inequality in Canada. I grew up in the 50’s and 60’s when European arrivals who survived the war and concentration camps were called “DP’s - Displaced Persons. It was a very derogatory term and it always made me cringe. Plus how we treated German Canadians and, in particular, Japanese Canadians who were put in detention camps. Horrible, disgusting stuff! Sorry this so long but I had to say it. Wishing you all the best as you embark on your new path! Stay safe, stay strong 🇺🇦 🇨🇦.

I agree and disagree. As a German I could only imagine how frustrating it might be to constantly be taught about that particular time in history but I think the reason so much emphasis is put on it is due to it a) being one of the darkest times in modern history b) it still being relatively fresh (people are still alive that lived through that time) and c) the fear of national pride is still running rampant all over Europe- look at Italy, Spain, and how the AFD is gaining traction in Germany. People tend to forget very easily and if not enough emphasis is placed on showing "what is wrong" then it is bound to happen again.

It's been a long time, Hayley!! I remember when our current governor was first running. Prior to that I didn't know he existed. I have this old HS friend, however, who currently lives in N.C. We did NOT go to HS in Florida!! We knew each other from St. Thomas, USVI. She had told me how she couldn't STAND this governor. I was taken aback. I didn't vote for him, but I didn't have such strong feelings towards him either. And I live here!! I mean, I didn't even KNOW who the governor of North Carolina was. Present tense!! The Republicans decided to wage this campaign against everyone who's not conservative, Christian, white and male. Then this governor - we call him DeathSentence - decided to wage this war on WOKE. Since that moment, he's been NOTHING but a FALLEN MAN in my eyes. Ironically, despite this war on WOKE, I've learned about even MORE historical atrocities that are NOT widely known yet perpetrated against the African-American community and other non-white communities. For instance, I knew about a few prosperous black towns that were destroyed in US history only to find out this had been a pattern repeated SEVERAL times in US history. As an American of Afro-Caribbean descent - who considers himself fairly learned - it only dawned on me recently how much race has shaped SO MANY of our national policies since its inception up to the present!! It's history like this that CRT - a graduate level curriculum - would address. However, the conservatives have decided to hi-jack the concept of CRT as a campaign tool to wage a war on ALL American non-white history. Have you heard about Amy Chen and her TikTok channel? She's been a revelation! And despite all of the pushback this governor has been getting, he's only decided to double down on this same garbage - while totally neglecting his obligations as governor. Don't get me started on his campaign against the LGBTIA community!! Getting back to my friend who lives in N.C., I've tried to tell her I don't know how she knew WHAT she saw back then but she was certainly prescient!!

The thing is the environment has influence over our psychology. It has the power to change aspects of you. But also vise versa. Stay strong. Why some cultures (people) might seem more primitive or barbaric than others. (again these are perceptions, and labels often used by the dominant culture and cultural assimilation) There is no hierarchy of better only different. There is *unity in diversity* you just need to find it. The red [warm gray] with the yellow [white] for the orange [light gray], the yellow [white] with the blue [black] for green [cool gray], and the blue [black] with the red [warm gray] for purple [dark gray]... it's a rainbow, it's a spectrum. Pure white light are all these spectrums combined in unity. We need the diversity to achieve our own fullest potentials. We are not all the same yet we are equals. Think of the house of the Addams Family black and white TV series, the set; it was pink's and yellow's and very colorful... the right color for the perfect gray scale because it was black and white. Or think color inversion art. Reds are greens, blues are oranges, yellows are purples. Noting hardly is what it seems to be at first glance alone. Besides that there are spectrums we have problems with in perceiving, infra-red spectrums, ultra-violet spectrums, we need aids (tools/machines) for these.

Sorry. This is bullshit. There most definately IS a hierarchy of better and worse. It is not just a lable from the dominanat culutre. I am also concerned about the political changes in Germany. I you look at the growing support for the AfD (Alternative for Germany) and knowing what it stands for, than it's not that much of a difference from what we see in the US and also in other countries. We are entering a truly dangerous era.

In the 1990s, I was visiting the USA regularly. I enjoyed my stay and also the friendly people. Nowadays, I would not go there, even if I would get a lot of money for it. Democracy and freedom once were an American trademark. America was the role model of a free country. They helped us not becoming a part of Soviet Russia and without their sacrifice, we would probably have to raise our arm to say hello. I am and will always be very grateful for that. Your Florida boy will burry democracy and thus destroy your freedom. The problem might be, that too many people confuse democracy with the Democrats. I had the impression, that the difference was not clear to every American, who I met. As far as I have understood, democracy is the foundation of the USA and it is not a good idea to destroy the foundation of a building. We all (there and here in Germany or Europe) live in times, where more and more people - no matter of their political orientation - confuse reality with opinion and with something, that you can pick. We too obviously only have idiots, who get into politics and it is a shame. But at least, there are no attempts to exclude people from voting. And yes, if somebody is publicly declaring the holocaust for non existent or maybe even for justified, he be so off the stage and facing a trial. We all have to carefully watch and defend our democracy, because this is the only way to get rid of people who were elected, but are bad. Everything, that is not a democracy is a dictatorship. And that usually reduces those who profit from it to a very small group, while in a democracy, the majority profits (more or less).

In another video someone was talking about how waiting staff, shop staff etc. in USA get treated like dirt, as though they are part of some social sub-class. I have wondered if that could be some sort of cultural relic, dating back to the days of slavery? As for hurricanes, it does make me wonder why buildings can't be made hurricane proof. I live in Croatia where new buildings have to be meet standards of earthquake resistance.

I am personally not against wait staff. I worked as a waitress/bar tender and enjoyed the jobs tremendously. I made more working those jobs than working minimum wage at a grocery store. It honestly depends. I made a video about this topic and my argument was that yes it sucks but you can’t expect other people to do the r right (politicians) and making wait staff earn minimum wage vs being tipped would hurt them tremendously 😖

I think the U.S. sometimes takes freedom of speech and freedom of opinion too far. That in itself may be an insulting and outrageous statement to many Americans, but what it results in is that reality itself can become negotiable. Where slavery and the Holocaust weren't two of the most horrible and atrocious periods in history, but suddenly it leaves room for the argument that they weren't that bad after all, as you allude to in your video. If you publicly say in Germany that the Holocaust wasn't such a bad thing, you'll probably get a hefty fine, and if you keep saying it, you can go to prison. Some people actually have. This is not "the government" or "the left" forcing its views on you. It's part of the bare minimum of consensus that German society expects you to observe. You can exercise your freedom of speech and your right to disagree all day long on countless other issues. But the holocaust and WWII are the line in the sand. Apparently that isn't the case anymore with slavery in America.
@petercollingwood522
@petercollingwood522 Жыл бұрын
German social consensus? Is that really "German" society, or the society that was imposed on Germany by foreigners who won that war? In other words. Would Germans be thiking this way if they had won? Part of the problem with the USA is that socieity has fractured such that there is no concensus any more on such significant issues. Both sides have extremes that push their nonsense and expect them to prevail. For each side it's a zero sum game in which no quarter can be given. Rational intelligent debate in such a situation is practically impossible. It will take a long time for this to correct itself, if in fact it ever does.

Hi Hayley, It realy is rediculous that a man like Desantis can rule a state or a country. His talking about slaves had some good bennefits from there holders or how they were called masters. This is an unbelievable cheek. How can someboy on the top of a state can say something like that? The same is the scedule of scools. The teachers are not allowed to talk about homosexuality or things like that. I my self am a little bit conservative but I would always accept the peoples opinion without making them criminals. If someone is a homo than let him be like that. If he or her doesn´t hurt someboy it should be all right. I hope you won´t be missunderstood if you have your liberal attitude in your americn scool. I fear that the people are very patriot and everything with critisism against the usa is enemy or even communist.

Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, wants to be U.S. president. I don't like the guy either. In my opinion, it would be bad for the US if he becomes president. That will represent the divide between states that belong to the Democrat camp and states that belong to the Republican camp. The reality of life between liberal and conservative reactionary societies in the federal states will be so extreme that if a guy from California goes to Texas to visit a relative, that person will feel like he is in another country. In an extreme case, a second civil war could result; all it takes is the right politicians on both sides to inflame the mood to such an extent that it leads to fighting between the states. If this happens, we will see the liberal states unite politically and the conservative, reactionary states do the same. Both sides will be irreconcilably opposed, as in the first Civil War. This Civil War may drag on for a relatively long time because, unlike the first time, the superiority of the Northern states is not given. On both sides, there will be states that have the appropriate industries to supply the armies of both sides. If there is a second civil war, it will begin around 2030.

@deliapayne1162 the percentage of black people that owned slaves is the tiniest percentage known to mankind and that is taught in public schools. White children are not being taught to feel bad about themselves and how would you know that when you haven't been in school for decades? I think you are confusing white people from the USA and thinking they are the only people that are in the USA.... Why would they be taught to feel bad about themselves due to them being white? That makes no sense and is completely absurd...

Let me cite Michael Harriot in the Grio regarding Black slaveowners: In 1830, 3,777 free Black people enslaved 12,907 Black people, about one-half of one percent of the 2 million people enslaved in America, according to a study by Black historian Carter G. Woodson. Even in these cases, Woodson notes: “The census records show that the majority of the Negro owners of slaves were such from the point of view of philanthropy. In many instances, the husband purchased the wife, or vice versa … Slaves of Negroes were in some cases, the children of a free father who had purchased his wife. If he did not thereafter emancipate the mother, as so many such husbands failed to do, his own children were born his slaves and were thus reported.” So basically the percentage was negligeable (0.5%) and most of these cases wouldn't even usually fall under slave ownership
