The fish food I am correctly feeding my Japanese rice fish, also known as Medaka fish. I keep these fish outdoors throughout the year in the U.K. in a barrel style pond.

How many medaka do you have? How big is their outdoor pond? How deep? Do you have a small heater for the winter?
@Mountain_Aquatics8 ай бұрын
They don’t need heat in winter they are very hardy. It’s not a large pond it is a half barrel. I had 8 in there however I have brought them in to an indoor pond now

@@Mountain_Aquatics but you dont want it to freeze over right? You feed them in the winter when outside?
@Mountain_Aquatics8 ай бұрын
It’s fine if the top freezes the fish stay at the bottom in winter. No I don’t feed when it’s very cold

Did you lose any of the adults over winter? Finally have some on the way!
@Mountain_Aquatics Жыл бұрын
No they all pulled through the winter fine. But it was a very mild winter so still need to see how they fair when the water freezes. Which type/colour Medaka are you getting?

@@Mountain_Aquatics the Platinum Medaka Rice Fish but may have to get some bird netting as there's been a few incidents in our ender tubs this year! Did my Mrs get back to you on the racking units we are now using? Saw a question a while back but not sure if you let you know? Thanks for the info and your experience as always!

@@Aquadiction the platinums are stunning especially against a black background. Yes she got back to me. They don’t fit my r tree a kid which is a shame because they look really good

Hello. When is the best time to get these fish and pond set up? I’m wanting to do this for my garden but want to timing to be good for them? Many thanks
@Mountain_Aquatics Жыл бұрын
Hello Anna, summer and spring is the best time to get these outside. Adult Medaka are very hardy so you shouldn’t have too many problems, the weather is starting to cool down now so I would wait until after the worst of winter. What will you be doing for a pond, do you already have one?
@annawhite4751 Жыл бұрын
@@Mountain_Aquatics thank you for replying, much appreciated. I don’t have a pond but am thinking of upcycling an old pot or trough
@Mountain_Aquatics Жыл бұрын
@@annawhite4751 yes a big pot will be great for Medaka, probably the hardest part is actually finding somewhere to buy them from in the first place

Where sells the Medaka rice fish

Where are you Richard? There’s a place near Nantwich that currently has some platinum Medaka in if that helps

How are the medaka fish doing now?

They are doing well. I’ve managed to breed them and raise a few fry but not many. I have them in an indoor pond in the garage at the minute

@@Mountain_Aquatics good to hear thay they are doing well. Hopefully you have more success raising these fry. I'm looking to do the same in the very near future. I may not put the plants and medaka in until after the winter though.

@@Mountain_Aquatics I've got some in my aquarium in the house, but I'll likely keep them in the aquarium and purchase more for the pond.

Can you keep these out door in ireland
@Mountain_Aquatics5 ай бұрын
You would have to check locally I’m afraid. Over here there is Likely to be some rule changes soon as there is a worry they could become invasive as they survive our winters easily. They would survive outdoors all year round though if that is the answer you’re looking for

@@Mountain_Aquatics that’s great as these are like the cold water version of guppies. I’m looking for small colourful fish for outdoor pond. And these are the most tropical looking I can find.
