I really enjoy how you describe the architecture errors that the carpenters did, like the dance floor, boards weren't staggered! You always make me laugh! SO cool how the vines on the floor are growing in away from the light, so weird! Every classroom had a little book shelf and locker in the corner! really old ! Hope you and Kristy have a great weekend! Thanks Rob!

I was an 'urban explorer' long before the term was coined, and I had some pretty amazing finds, in my day. There was, of course, no internet or cell phones in those days, and though personal video was available back then, the equipment was large, heavy, and cumbersome, not to mention very expensive. The best I could do then, was still pictures, on good old-fashioned Kodak film. I took many many photos, but most, if not all of them were lost in the several moves I've made since then. Unfortunately, physical issues prevent me from continuing with my hobby. You help keep it alive, for me. Thank you, and keep up the good work!

I don't know where the people who told you the school was built during the 1870's got that from; it's obviously a newer building built during the mid-20th century. What was probably the case was an 1870's school building was here originally, and then they demolished it about the late 1940's to build this one. You can tell this is a mid-century building by the metal framed windows, concrete slabs used for the ceilings in the classrooms, steel trusses in the gym, among other things. A 19th century school would have wood framing, solid brick walls, ornate woodwork, and hardwood flooring.

I agree, it's nice to see the natural decay. They cleaned it out pretty good, not much waste. The rooms that did have stuff left maybe those rooms were used after the school closed? And those folks didn't bother or didn't know what to do with the stuff so just left it. Still nice explore, thanks Rob. 👍

Awesome video! It was sad to see those books left behind and the pianos, but they cleared much more out than most schools. That was quite a school building in its day. Not surprising to find vines there. You can't ever get rid of them, and if you cut them it just makes them mad! Those were amazing and I have never seen moss that high either, inside or out. Great video, really enjoyed your creative and artistic presentation of this place!

I understand how a structure can become weak from decade after decade of wear and tear (such as a school, hospital, etc.). But, what I don’t get is how some things (piano, cabinets, etc.,) don’t get salvaged....and yes, I do know who “Archie Bunker” was, I was a kid when that show ran.

I'm an appraiser. A few years ago I visited a property that was a catholic church, school, rectory, nunnery. They were splitting off the rectory and nunnery to be developed. The church was to stay open for services on sunday only. They asked if I needed to see the school, I said hell yes. There was tunnel from the nunnery to the school that ran under a parking lot. The rectory had an enclosed sidewalk that ran to the church sacristy. Anyway, the school closed in 1965 and it looked.ready as if to re-open in 1966. Truly amazing. Now, a few places opened in the school basement and I again snuck upstairs to the classrooms. The walls were gutted between the classrooms,.but not to the hallways. They are saving the hardwood and travertine floors. It was truly a time capsule. The church has it's own interesting story when it was moved almost.3/4 of a mile brick by brick.

Hi Robb, RNK, I always like your atmospheric shots with your camera. . Your videos are simply amazing! - That's why I usually hit the like-button before actually having seen the video yet, because you always surprise me in a very pleasant way with your vids. I liked the grand auditorium with the still beautiful stage curtains, especially the one with the music notes the most. - Very cool! - Wishing you and Kristy all the best, stay safe and take care in these insecure times. - Peace and kindest regards from Switzerland.

This was super cool school. Love that there was no vandalism. The natural decay was beautiful! I also loved the "Archie Bunker" chair. They are so comfortable. The floor in the dance room scared me. Must have been an 1870's school building on the site initially, but was demolished and replaced with this one during the mid-20th century. It's far too modern a building to be 19th century.

The middle school I went to in LaGrange NC has a library about that size. The newer front portion looks like it was built about 1952 I'm guessing, which looks like the time period this school was built. The library currently used is in this front portion. I believe the original part of my old school was built during the 30's, and was a consolidated school for African American students. There was a large room I took some reading classes in where there was also a second math class sharing the space, which had to be the original library before they added to the school. The gym, cafeteria, and a single story row of classrooms appear to have been built in the 50's when the front wing was built.

Rob: Nice Video. But you might consider that most older buildings are not restored or mowed down is that they are full of asbestos which is very expensive to remediate. The other side is that you are walking through this place with all of this material exposed along with a lot of mold in places and you don't have a respirator or any breathing apparatus on.

I would just like to also mention that I know you do what you can to protect these places from the ill-intentioned with your censorship, but it was very easy for me to find out exactly where this one was based on video content. I totally agree with you on that. There is one definable shot that gave away information and with about 5 minutes of research, found the actual National Register of Historic Places PDF file. Actually, this school dates back to 1949. I believe it was stated in the video it was much older than that. Regardless, another great video!

I found this a very interesting video being I've been a NC resident most my life. Most the schools I went to had buildings built in the next decade, the 50's, but my Middle school in LaGrange was originally started during the 30's. One of the electrical receptacles I saw in the video does look consistent with late 40's design, as does the style of steel framed windows. The earlier steel frame windows I find have taller more rectangular shaped panes, where as the later mid-century steel windows had wider square panes.

Interesting to see that old style PA speaker at 4:30. A weird thought hit me when I looked at it: I wonder if someone replaced it (after closing, of course) with a vintage one that said "Tannoy" on it, would a viewer catch on that it was classically British?

At the 23 minute mark, you can see a Walmart logo on the back wall of the classroom, which means this school probably closed in 2008 (that's when Walmart introduced their current logo with the "Spark"). Of course, part of the building could've been used for other purposes after the 2001 closing date that was listed on the blackboard of a classroom shown in an earlier part of the video.
