Thank you for this. I’m not disabled, but it means a hell of a lot to me that someone can make a video talking about this shit. If you install Seamless Co-Op for Elden Ring, it takes you off of the Fromsoft servers, meaning you can have one cohesive co-op game together without worrying about invasions in the overworld or getting kicked at the end of a boss battle. Once off their servers, give Elden Ring Reforged a try, you can set difficulty levels at a bonfire, for fanatics that means making the difficulty harder, but for your brother, check special difficulties and there are a couple laid back ones he might enjoy, each one lists their changes to AI and stats when you select them.

Amazing video. Simply, amazing. The story of your brother broke my heart (the interview at the end made me shed a tear, yet made my heart smile, he sounds like such a pure and happy soul) and this video truly opened my eyes to just how important accessibility is in games. This is an issue that needs more recognition, attention, and solutions in games, and it's honestly kind of shocking that this is as widespread of an issue that it is considering just how massive the gaming scene is nowadays. Oddly enough, most of the games that you listed at the end that you praised for having accessibility options, were indie games, whereas the ones that proved troublesome for your brother were AAA... all those dollars, and yet so many companies refuse to spend just a few more to make the game more accessible to the folks that really need that help... I could say more, but at that point I'd just be rehashing what you said in the video considering that you addressed the topic perfectly. Again, amazing video. Keep it up 🐸♥️

I really appreciate it dude. ❤️ There are a number of AAA games that include accessibility options. Generally Japanese games have a bad record of it but Super Mario Odessey has a mode that leads you to the destination and my brother really needed that to beat it. I think a lot of Western games ease up on difficulty and provide more options beyond just difficulty like God of War, The Last of Us 2, and Doom Eternal, which I mentioned, provided a lot of assistance but it's still really tough for him. He started playing Crash 4 and it actually gives you a mask if you die at a certain checkpoint several times. They give you 2 if it keeps happening. Takes him an hour to beat a level but he's chipping away at it! I just wanted a video pushing accessible difficulties in the little way I can because a lot of people believe that it ruins the experience. I think they're just options. ❤️

The push against accessibility comes from this weird push by gamers to hold their accomplishments over the heads of others. It makes me so frustrated when people shit talk these settings and claim there's no reason for it to be there. Like the massive hate campaign against Dead Space Remake's content warnings. "You're playing a horror game". Okay, sure. But that fails to take into account the people that are fine with the depiction of gore and such, but would be triggered by a depiction of suicide. It may not be a large majority, but those people do exist and it's great that they have that.
@bigdaddyfrogstat Жыл бұрын
Problem is when these warnings can be akin to spoilers. Like, one of my favorite stories has detailed depictions of child abuse, but it comes completely out of left field in a big genre switch so it was far more distressing and impactful for me. I think it would be better if there was an online database of entertainment detailing the possible triggers for those concerned.

Yes, like I'm fine to see dead humans or mutant abominations, but seeing animals like pigs and chickens being abused or their corpses sold is messed up for me. I see that too much IRL already. Or eye trauma, I've had a lot of surgery and tests on my eyes growing up and am at risk of them getting worse, so I get empathetic pain when someone else also is getting something done to their eyes.

I agree so much! I have dcd (known as dyspraxia sometimes) and even though i am not technically disabled things like video games are harder for me and i always appreciate easier modes so i can you know actually enjoy playing the game and it makes me so angry how people treat these modes as “for babies” (also infantilizing neurodivergent and disabled people is a huge problem and this is a good example of that) and you can only play on the hardest modes or else your “weak”.

hey frogwater! great video! if you still want to play a game like mario kart with your brother, you know mario kart 8 deluxe has a "steering assist" that can basically prevent you from falling off the track and into hazards and whatnot. you still maintain most of your control over the car, but it's like a stream of air sort of shepherds you towards the track if you're about to fall off, and there's like a constant pressure/nudge on your car that makes it face the right way, it's really nice, i would highly recommend it. i have friends with kids who are probably too young to be playing mario kart, and it's always a blast for them to be able to play on a level playing field with the adults. it also has an auto-accelerate feature in case you have trouble consistently holding down the A button, sometimes i turn that setting on because of my hands, and honestly I don't think i could play 250CC to save my life without steering assist

Thank you for making this well-considered commentary. I also appreciate when games treat accessibility not as something to be derided or talked down to, but another option to open up their games to a wider audience. I'm very much of the opinion that games do not have to compromise their vision in order to include more people. Surely, the creatives that are making these games can benefit from opening up their consideration to a larger audience so that more people can enjoy their art? There is always something more to learn. I think this just speaks to a more expansive notion of accomplishment. Mine does not have to be diminished for yours to be worthy of praise. If I have a harder time, at least in the end we can all share in the games we love. Again, thank you!

Thanks for talking about this, whilst my disabilities are arthritis and legal blindness, I have siblings who are cognitively disabled. they deserve more game options that don't insult them, there should be more games that give an easy way for them to feel like a hero. A problem I have due to schizophrenia though is sometimes my brain will speed up and words sound slow and distorted. Whilst this is an advantage in combat sections since I get free bullet time, it ruins parts of dialogue or precise timing where you need to wait for the moment. if more games let you repeat dialogue without the NPC getting snarky that'd be great. more difficulty options is always good.

Hey thanks! I dunno if I communicated everything well. It's been a while since I made this, I just kinda wanted to advocate a bit for it. Always a fan of options, even if its half baked like a number adjustment to health or damage values. Like that dialogue issue, there's a lot of accessibility options I could have covered; I kinda just focused on "difficulty" in general.

@@bigfreakinfrog we're glad you focused on difficulty since that's the 1 most people are irrationally against. it's important for many people. Thank you for sharing this! I am very grateful for mentioning Hades' GodMode and Celeste's diversified Accessibility Options, because they threat the needle of Intended Experience and Making things approachable. I dearly admire Celeste because the different knobs and sliders for modes are so variegated and diverse, catering to specific kinds of issues. Are the problems of reaction times? Visibility? Deacent rates? There are knobs for that! Difficulty isn't just a 4-choice buffet ranging from Easy to Hardest - it actually articulates how (and and implies why) certain ways the game will challenge you. Hades' God Mode does none of that , just givng a slight - but ever increasing - percent based damage reduction, earned on each death. It assumes the player wants to win, to live as long as possible, but sweetens the fail state of loss each time by awarding a consistent reward beyond the randomized loot. It takes Longer Time to truly stack up (many, MANY deaths) but it grows with the otherwise frustrated player's confidence, granting that sense of growth and gradual progress which feels integral to Zagreus' own progress in both overcoming his captivity AND repairing his fractured relationships. Thank you for articulating this, especially after your incredible Dark Souls video. I feel the Easy Mode vs Intended Experience discourse is misses much nuance, and I love the rich fields of conversation that flourish beyond the limits of that dichotomy. One final thing: would you be able to add subtitles at the end of bit when your brother speaks? I really loved hearing it from the man himself -n abled person making a video on disability AND having a disabled person voice their take is Good Shit. However, the autogenerated captions didn't seem to transcribe some words properly (I don't think your brother liked Killing Father Immigrants - i hope, anyway :p ). Thank you for a good video! I feel like especially with recent advancements in AI it should be very easy to make it difficulty setting that adjusts for the player and whatever disabilities they may have. For people who like games that are specifically difficult like Dark souls you can make a difficulty setting called "developers intention" so that they can feel good about beating the game and it's intended difficulty and nobody could say they chose the easy option
@bigfreakinfrog Жыл бұрын
I know a lower difficulty would go against intention for that kinda game. Reading comments, I also realized that some people just don't have the self-control to not pick an easier option. I don't view it as self-control, I view it as a fun time. I should make an updated video some day. Not like an updated opinion or anything, just like qualifying the argument for options a bit more by recognizing concerns.

@@bigfreakinfrog I've never heard of someone lacking a self-control to pick an easier option. If that's their natural inclination then wouldn't that mean that they prefer an easier game? It would really be interesting to see if there has been a huge shift in the philosophy of game design or if it’s simply that there is more information present visually. When I played Resident Evil two as a teenager, it took me an hour to get to the gun shop, and I had a blast doing it. In modern titles I find myself asking what on earth I’m supposed to be doing at any given moment. When I came home from college, having not played video games for many years, my little brother showed me games with the twin stick control scheme. He told me just to practice, walking around in a few different games because it had been implemented and almost everything. It is completely natural now. Things can be learned no matter who we are or what our limitations are, but there needs to be something in place to guarantee every player has some sort of objective in mind. Most of the time now I celebrate if I find a key or get out of door. The problem, when people insist that needing some sort of accessibility option is damaging to the initial vision of the creator is that by forcing those of us with limitations to hack the game, we have a different experience if we have one at all. If a developer has assiduously selected every detail of a well crafted story game loop, I’m sure they want more people to experience it if possible. Once more developers attempt to accomplish what was done in The Last Of Us on PC, I’m sure libraries will be created to streamline the process once some accessibility concepts become a part of the workflow.

This was very insightful. I live with rightside ataxia (caused by a tumor surgery). Ataxia is limited muscle control, and for me that comes up mostly for my right hand, making twinstick games and games with fast camera movement borderline unplayable. For most of my life, I refused to accommodate myself in regards to games, basically denying my disability. I did beat many games by sheer determination (including Fromsoft titles, where lock on is the most helpful accessibility feature for me). I only became "good" at shooters when they allowed for gyro controls, since motion controls aided by both hands work marvelously well. Anyway, I really dislike the people with disability argument when it comes up in those heated, often toxic, Fromsoftware difficulty arguments, because I always felt it painted disabled people, like your brother and me as convenient excuses and scapegoats. That said, my perseverance in Fromsoftware games or Monster Hunter isn't quite normal I realize more and more. Having a bit of a window into that reality made me realize that disability probably matters way more in the difficulty discourse than I gave it credit for. I think I'll hold back on the pushback and look into this more. Thanks!

Great video! 💜 I've always loved video games but because I'm disabled I've been unable to play many of them, I've mostly just stuck to watching other people play. It's great to hear your brother has been enjoying Ghost of Tsushima! Funnily enough, my parents got that for me as a gift when it came out. At first I was hesitant to try it, I was worried I'd be unable to play it and be disappointed, but I've had a blast with it! For me personally, it helps that there aren't huge hoards of enemies attacking me at once, and that for most missions I can choose to take more time and take the sneaky route, which is a lot easier. I don't feel like I'm in a rush and I can carefully take everything in. That's what's been my issue with most games, it takes me a moment to notice everything and since everything moves so fast, I tend to struggle quite a bit. As someone who considers himself a souls veteran I am completly for all kinds of accessibility features and completly against easy modes, and those two things should be separate, like you mentioned in the video easy modes can be insulting and change the experience from the intended one while making it accessible in the settings or a separate menu (even if it results in something closer to a normal ,,easy mode") will be much different. Looking forward to more stuff from you mate (and yes, I am one of the people that the souls brought here)

Games development is a business, so there will always be a calculation made.. how much will this accessibility mode cost and how many more sales will it bring in? Something like color-blind mode is always worth it, considering how common it is. Options for different types of mental handicaps or deformed/missing limbs is only going to be economically viable for AAA companies with wide projected sales. That's the sad reality of the situation.

Edit add on ; Everyone has different struggles having a “Easy Mode” (or my preferred name Accessibility). WILL NOT ruin the experience, EVEN IF other people who use it who doesn’t fit in that category too, Dark Souls games are able about over coming hardship and struggles, about pushing on against all odds but for some it’s literally impossible, and also who doesn’t want MORE people to play Soulsborne games, to keep building up the community and all of us can bond over our shared struggles, in game and in real life…

Yo! Just wanted to drop in to say that imo, your brother playing Elden Ring with accessibility hacks and helpful mods would NOT be out of keeping with the intended experience of the game as overcoming hardship. It's true that tuning the encounters precisely to have a maximally satisfying difficulty curve would probably require skilled developers and/or modders working closely with disabled gamers. But your brother is already playing on hard mode all the time, isn't he? The point is to experience challenge, overcoming and mastery- not what settings/configuration you have when you experience those things.

I have an issue with reaction speed in some form. It makes me terrible at FPS/TPS games, but I can technically beat most on a middle difficulty. It's at its worse in games focused on parry mechanics. If parry is required to even be possible to beat it, that's it, end of game for me. It's annoying how people think even Dark Souls absolutely must not have an easy mode, and it's quite honestly bullshit people can't accept not everyone is physically capable of beating it without depending on easy modes. And I've got news for anyone who thinks FromSoftware games are so great because once you overcome that brutal difficulty, that you feel great. I didn't. I even beat Malenia, and I just felt "thank god, the bullshit is finally over." And what might seem odd, I legitimately enjoy Nioh despite similar levels of frustration. I think it's because the combat of Elden Ring definitely ended up "push LB to win" while in Nioh, I feel like I'm developing different strategies for different enemies, there hasn't been any single "I win" button for me in Nioh. Anyway, something isn't fun and rewarding just because it's hard, not even Dark Souls or Elden RIng.

I love your reasoning on easier modes/more accessibility options, but I hate to be this kind of person and say that, juat like any form of art (video games are an art some people have fought me on that) it's not for everyone. When I think of the phrase "gaming is for everyone" it means not that everyone can play every video game, but everyone can experience that game either by playing it or watching. I absolutely can't play horror games I panic too much and waste precious resources or (in vast majority of horror games) fail to hide from the monster and die, but I have such an amazing time watching other people play those games. I may not be experiencing it firsthand by playing it but I am still experiencing it by watching it, and in my humble opinion isn't that what the online gaming community is about? I mean if it isn't then what are let's plays and other video game KZbin channels, twitch streams and any other thing that you can think of doing if not contributing to The gaming community experience. TL;DR you don't need to play the game in order to be able to experience it, so options to remap controls and add subtitles and a little bit of visual features to make the seeing it easier is ok, but adding a setting that can make less enemies appear, make those enemies take more damage or do less damage, or anything else that can be considered an easier mode that is toggled by a setting isn't needed in all games

Honestly the entire idea of 'difficulty experience' is completely manufactured. If you excuse me talking wide strokes - the tabletop games always had things like homebrew, modded versions, or even a 'this rule makes the game too long so we`ll just ignore it' type of moderation for a family evening.The problem with this flexible difficulty in gaming is just that it requires additional development time, and the modern game standarts have been lowered to 'the game should be playable on release' so, of course the only studios that can possibly have features like this are industry giants like Ubisoft. I have had the 'intended experience' mindset before, mostly because I don`t personally, am not affected by any disability, and console versions of games are pretty much a static thing. Recently, however I returned to pc to play some small indies my computed could handle, and aside from the fact I had a great time in them, it was also incredibly refreshing to mod games. Aside from difficulty options, sometime you just want to cause chaos on screen and have a sort-of godmode, and pc gaming allows to tap into code to have that. Developers have a set intended experience for players yes, but players Know what they want for themselves and having the ability to modify the experience more to your tastes will leave everyone satisfied. For the 'true achievers' you can place a sign that basically says 'you`re not playing the game the way it should be played' and yeah, but why would I care about that. I`m having a great time, and if the player is ever curious in the 'intended' experience - returning the game to basic ruleset or uninstalling mods is much much easier than creating them in the first place. Playing, in any shape or form, has always been about freedom and expression, so why should gaming be any different

I don't think difficulty options should become an industry standard. While I sympathize with your brother it's the one form of accessibility I don't think should be universal. Colorblindness options, remappable controls, multiple input devices, contrast options, photosensitivity options, mash toggles, UI scaling, CC, and CC font sizes are all things I would want to be in every game. These are all reasonable things that can be easily added and should be universal, at least as far as moderately sized dev teams are concerned. Outside of that it should be at the dev's discretion.

As a partially disabled person, I don't have any problem with the accessibility option, but I'm against the glorification of having the option, because at some point it becomes a slippery slope down to madness for both game design and game development. What if the creator of the game doesn't want to change the game design to cater specific disabilities? What if they don't have the resources to? What if then virtue signal groups review bomb the developers? Slandering the developers? To give you one example for a contention point : skill based multiplayer game... Should the accessibility option be pushed there? How about game balance? How about exploit prevention? How about that people will hate these features because it becomes a point of contention between accessibility and exploits or dumbing down the game? How about the fact that only the biggest of game developers would have the resources to even consider such a thing?
@bigfreakinfrog11 ай бұрын
I get that not every game is going to be compatible with something like this like competitive multiplayer games. When it comes to a single player game and larger companies with resources to cater to something like this; I'm always gonna support more options. I don't expect smaller developers to provide something like that but it's always a bonus when they do. I personally found that some of the more creative difficulty accessibility options come from indie games.
@bigdaddyfrogstat Жыл бұрын
I suppose I have 2 counter-points, one less convincing than the other. 1. Adding an easier option and telling people to not use it if they don't like it vastly overestimates human discipline. I'm myself guilty of taking the easy way out if I get frustrated by a game, be it lowering the difficulty or using console commands to spawn materials to get past the grind of gathering them. The beauty of Dark Souls is that it denys you these opportunities and unyieldingly forces you to play by its rules. Not all games should be like this, but I appreciate that such a game exists. Same with Morrowind. Had an option existed to add quest markers, I probably would've used it the first time I got frustrated. But the lack of this option made me learn and adapt, and now I wish more games were like this. 2. (Emotional and ranty) 95% of modern games are very casual and handholdy. I get very defensive when people come and demand that the few hardcore games that I adore be more forgiving. There are so few games that scratch the unforgiving itch I want, such as Red Orchestra. Why should the tiny amount of hardcore games that my side has be changed for the benefit of casual gamers? Don't you already have the majority of games pander to you?
@bigfreakinfrog Жыл бұрын
On discipline I guess I'm bias because I always prefer to select the tougher option to make it more fun for me. On that second bit, I totally understand. I made this a while back and should have included games which are completely different when given a much easier option like Darkest Dungeon and Fear and Hunger (I've been playing them recently, very fun). If I could change it I'd want to restructure it to support that some games completely change their identities when applying an easy mode. Maybe show support for difficulties that scale to the players level like how Hades gives increasing buffs with more failures. I am, however, unyielding in my belief that more options are better and people like my bro get really excited when something allows them to join. More of a sentimental thing that you either agree with or don't imo.
@bigdaddyfrogstat Жыл бұрын
@@bigfreakinfrog I'm fully sympathetic towards those who have disabilities or have family that suffer from them. Most of my ire is directed towards unskilled players and gaming journalists who demand a game marketed for its difficulty be easier to suit them. I fully support accessibility options for the colorblind, the epileptic or any other person who can be helped without changing the core structure of the game. As for those who simply can't engage with the difficulty, I recommend playing a different game. That's what I did with Sekiro. Too hard. My reasoning is this: Dark Souls is not merely difficult in its gameplay. The story is immensely vague and cryptic, and the side quests offer no quest markers or hints. Simply lowering the difficulty wouldn't make it accessible. And making it even more accessible would dramatically change the core of Dark Souls. The Witcher should have an easy mode so people can experience the great story, but Dark Souls doesn’t offer anything if you skip the hard parts imo. It's like a prettier version of Super meat boy.

I understand where you're coming from, but I'd like to present some counterpoints. Not every hobby in life can/has to be accessible. There's plenty of sports and hobbies that have barriers that stop people from participating. That doesn't stop people from getting inventive and making them accessible. There's also a difference between difficulty and accessibility that you mentioned. And I do agree that it's fantastic in certain games. When you mention Elden Ring, and having played many of the souls games, there may not be an easy mode in the options, but there are plenty of ways to augment the difficulty through summoning, proper builds, etc. Yet you also have to consider the intended experience that the artist wants its players to have. Ultimately, people will create their easy/accessible mode mods which if it brings new players in who otherwise aren't able to play, I think it's fantastic they can share the same journey as I have.
@bigfreakinfrog Жыл бұрын
I appreciate the differing viewpoint! The difference between video games and other hobbies, to me, is that what is possible is a lot more malleable in a video game. Difficulty and accessibility go hand-in-hand when it comes to certain cognitive disabilities. I'm always gonna think that more options are always gonna be better than not having options; especially if its made clear that it is not the intended experience. That way, people who care about playing what the developers intended (me) can enjoy it that way while others who can't (my bro) enjoy their own way. I don't think people need to invent their own easy mode through mods even though they will. Side note: if devs are so aware of players willingness to create an easy mode, shouldn't it be in the base game? Most people are not going to look up guides to play these things so this just ends up turning those away who could have been interested. I just think it's good to be inclusive to those who literally can't play it normally. I know there are ways to make Elden Ring easier in-game, but my brother took over 20 tries to kill Soldier of Godrick with the Samurai starter class. There is no way he's going to understand any of the mechanics or customization. That's where you might say the game is just not for him; but its not easy to look him in the eye and just say that. He wants to play games with me and I want to share them. I am biased but its with good reason. I know the Elden Ring my brother and I play will be different, but sharing that with him really matters to me. He has never improved at a sport and therefor was always excluded in school except out of necessity. He has not had the ability to make friends until our Mother made friends with other special needs parents. He is unable to work in jobs that aren't designated as special needs. Everything that my brother is allowed to participate in, in life, is a result of someone creating a program or alternative for him; so I'm absolutely unable to change my viewpoint on this. Having a separate mode that treats him with the respect he deserves makes him really happy. I'm always gonna advocate for more accessibility options in games; including difficulty. Gonna favorite this comment so it'll stay at the top. I feel like your comment allowed me to articulate some things I didn't in the video. Thanks for reading ♥

6:52 accessable modes wouldn't affect the experience of the intended experience. But it can because it's existence can be a constant thing in the background. I could attempt another run on this boss, or I could turn on accessibility mode and steamroll. It would get rid of the community shared adversity because now not everyone faced the same challenge. Let Me Solo Her wouldn't have been a community legend if anyone having challenges with Malenia could turn on a in game defeat boss button and defeated her that way.
@bigfreakinfrog Жыл бұрын
I should have talked more about intended experience and what you sacrifice when you implement something like that more. It does go against the game design of a lot of souls games and that's where opinions on this has to split. I'll always think the options are better because an easier option doesn't sound appealing to me. I did read an interesting comment recently that said something like "If you use easy mode then you prefer and easier game." I had friends that used Blacknife Teech (I think that's her name) summon and it just carried them through Malenia while I tried to learn the water fowl dance. Our experiences were already drastically different. Also, thanks for commenting! Accessibility is good when it's things like colorblind options and subtitles for the deaf. It starts becoming really ugly when it's integrated into the base design of a project by trying to be "accessible" in aspects like lack of complexity, tame story telling, unoffending (and tby then definition untelling) character designs and then the game devolves into a grey blob with nothing going for it.
@bigfreakinfrog Жыл бұрын
I definitely feel that. My favorite implimentations are specialized difficulty modes like celeste's slo motion feature and Hades' God Mode that gets easier the more runs you lose in a row.
@celiafrostborn Жыл бұрын
Accessibility is more options to allow for certain specific issues with their body or brain, Difficulty is pertaining to the things you do in the game settings set aside. It's not hard to see how those are different, your either willing to play a game without difficulty setting as is or you drop it or mod it to make it easier if you're on PC. Most games have difficulty settings, and even those that don't have extremely disabled people who manage to beat them like someone with cerebral palsy beating Sekiro with their breath. If that or any of the other weird ways people beat games can happen then anyone can beat pretty much any game, you just need enough determination to do so. Failure to do so so ply means you didn't have the dedication to do so disability or not...
@bigfreakinfrog Жыл бұрын
I get you but I definitely disagree. If something is "easier" it is inherently more "accessible" to more people. They are linked. I think you just value a creative vision which I totally get. A game isn't rewarding to me without challenges. I just don't think providing more options for those with cognitive disabilities or even people who don't enjoy a challenge is a bad thing. I'm not kidding when I say my brother needs an easier difficulty. It took him over 20 tries Soldier of Godrick, the tutorial boss that barely fights back in Elden Ring. At this point you might say the game isn't for him if he's not willing to throw himself at it for months to beat it. I would say an easier difficulty would give him a much better time and not affect those who want to play the intended game difficulty.
@celiafrostborn Жыл бұрын
@@bigfreakinfrog Fair enough, in that case though I'd recommend setting him up on a PC with a controller and modding to make his stats bonkers so he can still play. There have been plenty of other disabled people who have conquered the more difficult games through various means so I'm sure it'd be possible for your brother to do it eventually. It's all a matter of how bad you want it and your drive to push forward. I do feel for those who can't complete the game though knowing they miss out on the satisfaction but in my mind it's just not the same unless everyone experiences it under the same terms. It's easy to be discouraged by losing a lot for some people regardless of disability but some people blame the game and not themselves, souls games are what they are because they are unyielding in my eyes. If you could just put on an easy mode then it's just not the same game anymore to me, you may as well be playing dark souls lite at that point.

@@celiafrostborn 100% agree. I know that the version that my brother plays will not be the same as mine, although I am fairly certain he would not complete base Elden Ring if he spent an hour on it every day for 10 years. No matter how long he tries, I don't think he's going to get a driver's license either. He just doesn't have the coordination to despite trying for 4 years now. He wants to be a professional wrestler and is planning on taking classes to do so but he does not have balance and is incapable of articulating his speech. Some task are insurmountable and I don't think video games need to be in that same category. I'm not upset with games that don't include difficulty settings and i dont expect all devs to do that, I'm just disappointed for those who cant reasonably play it without those options; especially since games are a medium that already provide options to tailor an experience to the user. @@bigfreakinfrog In this case I would say your brother drew the unfortunate straw of a physical limitations as well as a mental one, I'd probably have some bias towards proposing changes to things to fit my siblings needs as well if I lived with them all my life. You're right that I'd probably say someone like your brother probably isn't cut out for vanilla games of most sorts, especially without help from you or another relative. Not to be insulting of course but some people just aren't born to be able to do certain things, this applies even to even those who are able bodied and minded. I also don't like the idea of the world changing to suit people with disabilities either, at least not on a large scale. In the real world you won't get it any easier if you fail an assignment at work wornexample and will be reprimanded all the same. Companies can try to make life a bit easier but the bottom line remains. It'd be nice if I could wave a wand and remove all the things that trigger my sensitive senses but the world doesn't work like that unfortunately. For your brother though I fully support your making a modified version of games so he can beat them though, he may have drawn a bad hand but who's to say you can't personally slip an ace Into that hand to make life a bit easier? In the same way I can't change the sensations I feel at work HR has given me a few tools to make me working possible without breaking down so I say go for it. Overall I can tell you're a good person and just want to help him and people like him enjoy games but you can't expect every game to be playable to everybody, sometimes developers have a vision and that vision makes it impossible for some to play it how they make it at base ya know?

I think there's a slight misunderstanding with the Souls games. The games aren't just about overcoming hardship, they're specifically about overcoming a world that _does not give a single shit about you._ Gameplay-altering options of _any_ kind would be completely antithetical to that. Don't get me wrong, accessible art is important to have. A lot of games would certainly benefit from having more accessibility features. Dark Souls just is not one of them.
