Competing in Jiu-Jitsu is tough. And the older you get the more your body feels it.
I started training BJJ in my 30s and have competed multiple times now and I've learned a few lessons from these experiences.
I'm gonna break down each of my comps for you as well as give you my top tips you should focus on going into competitions when you're over 30.

I do mma now and i plan on going back to karate when im too old for all this ish. Ive seen kyokushin guys hard sparring in their 70s and its because they go hard but never hit the face. The only injuries ive ever had in striking is shin bumps from checked kicks but in grappling? Almost all my injuries are from grappling. Say goodbye to your meniscuseses ifnyou do BJJ long enough and especially if you train takedowns regularly. Train hard and please rehab too people ✌️

Beautifully put. I've seen a few meniscus injuries in gyms now, and one common trend with that is most of them didn't rest it when it was just a minor strain. Anytime I have a minor strain or bump I rest a few days. Don't wait for a little niggle to become 6 months on the side. Resting one week now it's better than 6+ months out cos you didn't want to lose momentum

i started BJJ at age 53, been doing it for just over 2 years now, 1s blue belt. my first competition was as a white belt, won gold (2 fights) in gi, silver(1 fight) in no-gi, fighting in master 3. consolation prize medals are.... just that. i thought i did pretty well, but really none of us knew what we were doing. my next comp was as a new blue belt, fighting master 2 & 3, that went really well. only one fight each time, but 3 golds - gi 94kg, gi absolute, no gi absolute. that time i had a strategy and stuck to it, 3 submissions - the nogi was against a much smaller opponent who was fast - he took my back and got a deep RNC that i managed to escape, reversed and on top the 30kg weight difference helped a lot. i also got a 4th gold for no gi 94kg because there was no opponent.... thats even worse than a consolation prize. did my 3rd competition 2 months ago, fighting at master 1, and lost all three matches. the gi match i made an absolute hash of everything, worst "collar drag" i have ever seen (more like fall flat on my back pulling him on top of me), followed by some impressively stupid decisions. my first no-gi match i lost on the rule set, it was a draw but last scorer wins. i was happy with that performance, he did a great job of getting to deep half and sweeping me as i tried to pass his half guard, then did a great job controlling my hips. my 2nd nogi match was against a teammate who guillotined me pretty early on. he is superb, i was outclassed in every way. he went on to win the > 80kg absolute division, beating all the blue and purple belt winners - an amazing performance. so both my medals were consolation prizes. i was not particularly happy about my performance, but its made me rethink my approach, and work smarter, focussing more on technique rather than trying to smash my way to victory. iow, actually trying to do some jiujitsu. great to see a kiwi providing bjj content, cher bro!

I started BJJ at 42. My first competition as a white belt I was stuck in a belly down arm bar, resulting in multiple rips & pops, and being forced to take a few weeks off, followed by a slow return to 100%. As a blue belt I won some and lost some, but did actually win a match to earn a silver medal. As a purple belt I had some knee problems that had me considering no longer competing... until my professor said to me "I need you to fight a brown belt this weekend" in our upcoming tournament I had not been preparing for. I took gold in a bracket with me and 2 brown belts. As a brown belt I lost both of my matches vs one guy who was an IBJJF pans and world gold medalist at multiple belt levels, and another guy that had won matches at IBJJF worlds. Now I'm a 50 year old black belt, & my primary focus is on teaching and making everybody around me better. I believe that competing helps you get the most out of your training, no matter the reason you train. And also agree that almost all (but not all) practitioners should compete at least once at each belt level.

I had my first BJJ tournament a week ago. Same thing, fighting off a cold. And after the second match, my forearms were exhausted and the pressure in my head was crazy. Luckily it was the last match of that bracket and I had about 45 minutes before my next division. I was still exhausted though amd lost against an opponent who was fresh and game. I won my consolation match though, so 3 out of 4 ain’t bad.

I agree that getting a medal for losing sucks, but that's what happens as you grow older and divisions get smaller and smaller, in my first comp I got ranking and silver, but it was only one match, which I spectacularly lost, I wanted to cry but have to be on the podium, the winner was very gracious, she didn't jump around, which she could have done, but defeating a woman twice her age with lousy preparation didn't warrant a wild celebration, it was the first ajp event in our area after the first covid lockdown. After that I have a more philosophical approach, and see the comps as a progression of my hard work, I still get very anxious and can't "go there and have fun", but I do a little better now

im 13 i really love bjj and does it damage your body overtime? I mean after practice I feel a little sore but after a day it literally goes away and I feel fine, and Ive been told if I feel fine then I am fine. Also I don't wanna be a nuisance, but does it cause you brain damage? I mean I haven't gotten hit in the head once and everything feels fine including all of my cognitive abilities/thinking/vision and such.

@CrankStaleChips any sport will eventually take a bit of a toll on your body. But you're young so you can start doing all the right things now to help prevent that. A good stretching routine. Focusing on building good functional strength and mobility. Something like gymnastics would help build strength around your joints. The risk of concussion isn't super high really. If you tuck you break fall you'll be good. But there's always risk. But if you take care of your body and always tap early you'll be able to do this for a very long time

I think not just for jiujitsu, but for many forms of competition in martial arts, the competition format doesn't always highlight the deeper understanding of the art but more favors those who learn to specialize in the best strategies to win according to a certain ruleset. That doesn't mean competition is bad, just that it's a very specific game. When I was younger I competed often in kata and usually won with a beautiful execution of my favorite form. But I didn't understand the real purpose of training that form. Now I do understand the deeper principles that the form teaches, which is why it's more worth my time to practice the form slowly to get the proper development out of the training. The way I practice now makes more sense when you understand the deeper principles, but it does not look "showy" and would never win in a competition today. That's because the ruleset of competition gives value to things that aren't always that important in the long run. I think people who overly focused on competition can risk suffering injuries or at the at least over-training in a way that has negative effect on long-term health. For most people it's not worth the sacrifice. Martial arts is most valuable when it is also helping our health, but that means in addition to practicing and studying the art we also have to study the body itself. Competition doesn't teach those lessons (except by learning the hard way that you can only push the body so far before it breaks). Slow and patient study (and practice) teaches us about the body.

@trinidadraj152 so true. I often struggle with the points in bjj competition because it rewards the top position. But we I train I love playing guard and fighting off my back. I'll still do a couple more competitions because I enjoy the challenge buts it's definitely not the focus on my martial arts journey.

As with all sports, the cream always will rise to the top. Meaning 99% of us mortals are just bumps in the road for the 1%. You will never practice enough, train enough to be at the 1%s level. Yes, you can beat up the average Joe off the street but….. Reminds me of all the poor kids believing their coaches and parents thinking they too can go pro someday. @@JiuJitsuMobility I trained consistently earlier this year for 1 month then had to stop due to financial difficulties but I'm back on my feet next weekend so I'll be reattending the bjj/wrestling/muaythai gym. It's so much fun, the only thing I dislike about training is the soreness after. Some days I couldn't even do the drilling aspect of class cuz my lower back was hurting every time it was stretched. And it's not like I got slammed on my back or anything, I think it was just cuz I never was involved in any grappling sports so my body isn't conditioned to grappling. I used to just play soccer and do bodyweight excercises. I'm thinking when I start again next weekend Ill take a different approach. I'll start rolling from the ground level until my body gets conditioned then I'll start rolling from the standing position (because every fight starts standing). And I'll just take it easy for the first couple of months and just focus on techniques rather than exhausting my muscles/joints with powering through certain holds during rolling. What you think? I'm 30 yrs old btw, 170lbs.
@JiuJitsuMobility
@JiuJitsuMobility Ай бұрын
@Slickhuman I think that's a really smart approach. I'm recovering from a broken leg so I start every roll seated at the moment. Take downs is an important part but at first you need to learn how to escape and conserve your energy. The lower back pain could also be from a weak core. This will improve in time. But doing some strength training as well is going to compliment the grappling. It's a lot for the body to get used to. You'll do well to try roll with higher belts and focus on flowing rather that trying to out muscle them. Theyll be respectful to that approach and probably give you more pointers.I always match the other guys intensity. If they wanna cruise I'll cruise as well because you can learn a lot from those rolls. I was similar weight when I started. It sucks at first cos everyone seemed to be bigger and stronger. But focus on escaping, getting some hooks and recovering guard. It's a slow process but once you can escape and recover guard with the big guys they'll start using more energy to try and stop it. And in the last minute of a roll they'll be tired and you can start playing with them 😂
