We planted the orange sweet potatoes in two medium size storage bins from Walmart. We had a great harvest of good size tubers, enough for approximately 20 meals.

That empty bucket looks like some of the grow bags we did this year. Planted 3 plants in 15gal fabric bags, that we set on our south facing porch. We really had a tough time keeping it moist. When we dumped them out, we got maybe a pound between four bags. I think moisture was the biggest factor, but overcrowding and impatience too. We still had a month and a half of growing time left, but based on when we planted them, I thought we were at the 100 day mark and we'd have some spuds. The bags we had along our north fence did much better overall, as they were well within the spray of our sprinkler system, and had their own dedicated drip lines too. We also let them go right up near the end of October. We still had some bags that had pitiful results, but also got a few the size of a small baguette. The biggest thing I learned this year is that the Okinawan variety is incredibly hit or miss. I am planting way less of that one next year. I love the purple color, and the taste and texture are excellent. But we really didn't get many good sized ones from all the 25 or 30 slips we planted.

Tip I learned after using buckets for awhile for watering. When you drill holes don't drill on the bottom, drill on the side up an inch or so and then the water doesn't just drain out. Its not enough water that they are sitting in it and have wet roots all the time, but its enough that they have a reserve and it actually keeps the soil moist vs just draining away. You can also do double buckets with the bottom one holding higher water as a reserve.

Not a shabby harvest for small containers! I have had good luck with grow bags, as well!

Sweet potatoes eaten fresh are delicious. I watch a lot of Asian gardeners and a lot of them don’t wait to cure them, they eat them fresh.

I did that with potatoes and rabbit/chicken feed bags. They did ok, would have been better if I had kept up with watering.

Maybe more fertilizer and water next time? Good seedling material.
