I want to thank you, sincerely, for a couple of seemingly insignificant tips you shared here, Kai. You mentioned that you "bend the bar" when you're hanging. I immediately started to experiment with that, loved the feeling, and have now been doing bending for years. I don't only bend in that forward direction you alluded to, but backward, as well. I also draw my hands apart, as a third variation. You also state, almost in passing, that you use a slight shrug. I don't hear many fitness coaches mention this, either -- they usually just call it a _dead hang,_ and I assume folks take the message not to shrug at all. I naturally started alternating (every breath or two) between a total shrug and an extremely slight engagement at the bottom. That "slight engagement" is almost a dead hang, but I can't seem to bring myself to let go completely in the shoulders. It feels wrong... like I might overstretch the tendons and ligaments there. (I may have done it a couple of times over the years, and experienced some neck tension the next day.) I'm wondering if you shrug for the same reason. I'm 65 yrs. old, and my shoulders have never felt (or looked) as healthy and strong. Early on, I let go of my concern that I wouldn't be able to hold as long because of the extra energy expended with the shrugging and bar bending. I suspect, however, that my overall gains in strength has allowed me to hold on longer than I ever would have if I hadn't added your suggestion. (I regularly hold for over two mins. at at time, now, and often do this twice a day.) I just noticed that I thanked you for this over a year ago... please know that I am truly grateful and feeling more appreciative than ever! (I see that my my personal best back then 1:22. Thanks to my sticking with it, *and your tips,* my new p.b. is 2:17, which I've done a couple of times.) Many, many thanks!

This might sound silly but here goes. My granddaughter loves to climb the monkey bars, and I admired her strength and stamina so I started just holding my hands in the air for 3 minutes as part of my exercise routine. It is one of my favorite exercises. Very simple but it’s great for blood flow, arm, shoulder and neck strength.

Fwiw, that's the opposite (or complimentary) exercise relative to the hang. It's called _mountain pose_ in yoga circles, and is great as you say. *(I'm a yoga teacher, and give you two thumbs up!) Quite different from hanging, though. If you're afraid to hang, know that you can take hold of the monkey bars and _gently_ stretch your arms and shoulders by keeping your feet on the ground, and giving into gravity just a little. Take advantage of these benefits, too!

Hi Kai, I suffered a surfing accident about 15 years ago messing up my back and shoulder. I built a chin up bar in my backyard. I slowly started out doing chin ups and pull ups. It seemed I was creating more pain than any healthy benefit until I just started hanging. I've been doing this for about 4 years and my lower back, forearms, and shoulders are 100% better. Keep Hanging!

I've started doing this because I picked calisthenic training at the beginning of this year. At first, I was discouraged because I saw how weak I was, only able to hang for a time of 3 seconds, but I told myself that I can do this, and it will take some time, honesty and effort. Fast forward to today I can hang for over 3 min... oh and I can bust pull-ups at the gym, from wide grip to close grip, and people be low-key staring 😂. I highly recommend this simple yet difficult exercise for everybody, it will improve and build your strength especially in gripping and boost your confidence as well. I wish I would've known about it years ago

Had an elbow injury which 10 sessions of Physio didn't help. Resigned myself to living with the pain and cutting out many free weight exercises [which I love]. Tried hanging - it looked easy - but only managed 3 secs so I was determined to improve. Only a couple of weeks later and I'm up to 10+secs ...and NO ELBOW PAIN! I just can't believe how quickly and effectively it has helped and what a difference it has made not only to my Gym work-outs but to my whole life. Highly recommend trying this. [I'm 66].

Its such as simple thing to do but its more than just hanging. Grip: Don’t grip with fingers and palms down, get your palms as high up on the bar as you possible can, fingers over the bar (like a kungfu punch) Shoulders: Warm up thoroughly before hanging, move your shoulder while hanging to find your most comfortable position, try to engage your Lats (back muscles) Entire body: You can just hang, but its better to adapt into a hollow body position, and switch between the two. Mind body: Be aware of the muscles engaged in hanging and play with them. From a guy who loves callisthenics.

How did you get into the basics of calisthenics? I've got an elementary school across the street with a metal soccer goal I could definitely make use of. Oh and would you recommend calisthenics to be used as a primary form of bodybuilding along with Athletic based weight training for lower body (I'm worried about building my lower body more than upper for both mass and functional strength)

Also, the older we get, if we don’t continue to do things like this, we truly lose it. I’ve developed a lot of strength over the past 4 years but I rarely hang on anything because of where I live. And so the few times I’ve tried, thinking, I should be strong enough now to do pull ups again...nope!! I feel inspired! Now just need to get to a hanging bar regularly. Pro-tip -- if you care about cellular energy production, eat organ meats from pastured raised/fed animals (not industrially abused animals). Two key facts ought to provide inspiration. 1. Your ancestors did for thousands of years, and that's why you can exist today. The SAD diet has humanity falling off a cliff in less than 80 years. 2. Look up "Bruce Lee diet" and learn organ meats where the centerpiece of 8t. Why should we eat organ meats? They are very high in bio-copper, or as the Royals call it, blue blood. The body requires a balance of maybe 1 part organic copper to 50 parts organic iron (organic meaning plant or animal processed). Due to inorganic metallic iron filings being added to the food supply in 1941, that ratio might be 1 part copper to 250 parts iron, or even less, and the iron is in a cheap, toxic,, organic metallic iron filing form. A great place to start is The Root Cause Protocol -- it is free to learn and apply. If you don't like organ meats, ask me how I make them palatable. I never ate organ meats until my 50's... after an energy crash accelerated by chronic stress and 50mg a day of zinc supplementation. I easily eat liver, heart, kidney, brain and goat feet soup. I plan to pick up some spleen the next time I visit the Middle Eastern butcher who sells naturally raised goats and lamb organs. Organig magnesium is key, too. I juice organic carrots and greens, too. Ingest greens and juice away from calcium, which is an absorption hog that blocks magnesium absorption. I also recommend learning Zone Diet anti-inflammatory principles and ingesting broccoli sprouts. These sprouts jump start iron recycling in the liver, detox the liver, and allow it to regenerate. I believe this is why the research Dr. Rhonda Patrick highlights is so positive. They are horrible, though, so prepare for some bitter medicine when ingesting them or their juice.

I hang every day for 40 seconds, then hang another 40 seconds (but this time I do a slight 'pullup prep' moving shoulders out and down, squeezing scaps and lift up an inch or two every 10 seconds).

I know this was awhile ago, but I love it. I try to do biking and calisthenics, and I was just telling my wife how much stronger I got just from hanging or doing the monkey bars. Pull ups are cool, but just climbing around is a beast exercise.

Cool. I will be doing this for now on. I use a finger strengthener device. However, I do not like it. Those things can be dangerous and increase the chance of injury. Also, they isolate your finger muscles too much which can be detremental to your grip strength potential. What I like about dead hangs is that not only do they work your finger muscles but they also work your wrists, your upper body, core, and the upper portion of your lower body. I will definetly start doing these.

Good work Kia. The bar is so liberating. Really resets the body and frame. Good work. What I do at times is combine a sprint with a burpee pull up n do sets. For ex, 1 100 meter sprint, then 5 or 10 burpee + pull up combos....Then a nice bear crawl across the field at the end in the sun. Its awesome. Thanks.
