It is so interesting to see. I was a professional back in the 90s preparing for the Olympics 2000 and at that time we have only be training based on lactate treshold measuring. This training was common either in cycling, triathlon or running. You need to understand when your body goes into a negative oxygen intake in order to adapt your training that make you able to manage high lactate rates. Our target was 2.0mmol - 2.4mmol lactate for min of 2h with hr around 165. Max hr 195 and lactate peaks far above the target = simulating speed changes. In terms of running speed the target lactate was 3,4min / km. Max hr = 2.37min / km

A bit of what Edwin said above, but on lactate specifically each testing stage should be closer to 7mins minimum and the lactate test just be taken and then go again. You don’t want much rest between, and you don’t want to change paces much, maybe 15s/Km faster each stage so you can more accurately see when the thresholds are. I’m really confused watching so many coaches not know this information which comes with the lactate analyzer via a free course to take on the topic. Best of luck in training

Adding to other comments. Longer stages are needed to accurately find LT2. 6 to 7min stages are the current guidelines. Usually, without stopping, for best results.

Gwen, do you have a corrective exercise specialist or strength coach? This is the first video I've come across of your training protocols and taking a quick look at your running posture it appears you may be developing hints of thoracic kyphosis. This has a tendency to fatigue complimentary breathing musculature making you less efficient with oxygen uptake, thus interfering with running, swimming, and biking economy. A properly designed program can help alleviate or reverse potential issues and help restore balance.

Very interesting results! Especially considering that is only mile high altitude...where maybe (colloquially) bro scientists would say there won't be material altitude impact.

Interesting but i'm not too convinced about the tests. Does that device give consistent readings with let's say the same blood sample, different amount of blood, or samples from multiple fingers? Using percentage of max heart rate should be good enough to address the question as to what speed one can do at a certain altitude. The lactate inflection point will be at about 85% max HR. That will translate to different paces depending on how the body reacts to training days conditions, including altitude.

If %HR was truly sufficient, people would not bother with lactate tests. Problem is, the lactate "threshold(s)" in fact seem to vary considerably between individuals. In addition it varies for a given individual between activities (e.g. run vs bike) and depending on how tired you are

I would probably just go out for 3 min then turn around and come back to do the test, so I have 6 min each time and the lactate readings make sense
