Why are there homeless people? Why is there no homeless person in China? I think there are several aspects that need to be understood. 1. Drugs. Many people become homeless because they use drugs, which is the most common in Western countries. The Chinese government regards drug control as a very important policy. Because in modern history, China was devastated by drugs, and opium made China a weak country. Therefore, the Chinese government does not want to repeat the same mistake. A very simple example is that if you are found to have more than 50g of drugs on your body, you may be sentenced to death. 2. Poverty. Many homeless people around the world are homeless because of this reason. However, Chinese society is an agricultural civilization, and self-sufficiency is a clear characteristic of agricultural civilization. And Chinese people are one of the most obedient races, as long as they can eat enough, they will not do anything rebellious. At the beginning of China's development, many rural people would go to cities to seek opportunities, but cities could not accommodate everyone, so there were indeed homeless people at that time. However, when many people recognize reality, they will go back to their hometowns to continue farming or doing some small handicrafts to support themselves, after all, the cost of living in rural areas is much lower than in cities. 3. Laziness. Laziness is an important factor leading to poverty, but Chinese people are renowned worldwide for their diligence. If a beggar with sound limbs looks under 50 years old, then no one will give you a penny. Because in the eyes of Chinese people, when such a young person goes begging everywhere, it is caused by laziness, not for any other reason. Therefore, they will only look down upon and not help. 4. Family. Chinese family culture is deeply rooted, and this family is not just about your parents and children, but also includes your uncles, aunts, and so on. When a homeless person appears in a family, it is something that embarrasses the entire family. So, once such a thing happens, family members will find him, take him home, and provide some help. 5. Government. In Western countries, the government does not care if you are a homeless person because they believe you have the "right" to be a homeless person, so they will not provide any assistance to the homeless person. In China, because there is no drug problem, the only possibility of becoming a homeless person is poverty. The Chinese government has used many methods to help the poor, including providing job positions, providing all agricultural materials, and even helping them build houses. This is also a very important reason why there are no homeless people in China.

I don't deny that there are issues in the UK, but we both know that not everything smells of roses in China. I'm sure you have a great life in China, earn good money, live in a nice apartment, but remember where you were raised & how it gave you the tools to be the man you are today. From Singapore. I had always been so proud of my country. Best passport, best airport, best airline etc (the best, and sometimes second or third but overall still quite strong), highest gdp in Asia, top 5-10 gdp in the world, cleanest, most productive blah blah all sorts of accolades. I went to shanghai in 2016 and stayed there almost 5 years, until covid hit. I was blown away. Aside from culture, and beauty, and soul, let's just focus on Singapore fintech, marketing, logistics, cost to labour ratio, and labour to income ratio, and then income to living ratio cannot compare to China. Basically that means living standards. You can earn a rather low salary in China but you can make ends meet. You can pay rent, you can buy food. You can raise your kids, you can have education. Convenience is out of this world. I was trying to buy shoes on taobao (China amazon) and I didn't know my feet size. I paid 10rmb for a rider to deliver a measuring tape to me (that's like 1.2 us dollars for the service) and then I bought two pairs of those beautiful shoes in 2 sizes (44 and 43) because it's so easy to return the wrong size. And it's cheap enough that even if I forgot or were too lazy, it's not gonna be a big pain.

I've spent a few years in Singapore before 2000. It was very affordable then and government working hard to make things up and coming. I'm happy for Singapore that it's grown into the current prosperity. It's an island nation, so bound to be limited in land and resources which push prices up, whereas China being a huge country has the room to grow and people can move to rural area or inland cities when they don't need to stay in the big city. My Singapore friend just retired from a corporate job with a private home living with elderly parents. In order to keep cost low, he's plannig to sell the apartment, switch to government housing, so that they can apply for medical support when needed. In China, they'd have a lot more options to live a comfortable life.

China is a major country with thousands years of history and business trade. UK is small, pale and insignificant in comparison. This is especially true today when UK indeed is a small insignificant island with only pomp and ceremonial shows still running. Everything else is falling apart in UK. China on the other hand is a powerhouse of modern economy and trade. Things will only get worse in UK. This is driven by UK's long term losses such as loss of European Market, the USA does not want to sign free trade deal with UK, and UK is effectively participating in military conflict with Russia resulting in further losses for UK. UK recently lost access to Russian fishing waters which provided cheap source of fish such as cod in the past. So for UK it is losses losses and losses in all directions. And BBC is telling us that UK is eagerly going to give £3b per year to Ukraine to achieve more losses. What is UK going to get in Ukraine? Even if Ukraine is successful (so to speak). It will be a ruin with destroyed industry, destroyed agriculture and requiring not £3b per year, more like £800b per year to keep it going.

The BIG advantages China has? 1) Still lower wages but with a relatively INCREASING Standard of living, (We in the west have "Consumed" our way into Personal and National Debt.) The low cost relative to others make China ULTRA competitive. 2) BRICS brings an EXPANDING Trade market of countries that can grow in a similar manner, having low income, but the desire to move a way from being Capitalised by others (You know who) by using the new technologies offered by China (AND which those previously dominant countries are essentially refusing by imposition of tariffs). . And housing market going down is A POSITIVE, so people can afford renting, buying, and living. Thinking housing must always go up is a WESTERN rent seeking behavior where the rich uses housing to steal from the middle class and the poor. If it stabilizes, or even go down a little, it's a big win for all (except the rich .... and it's always a good sign when rich gets a little poorer)

Doesn't matter whether it's a democracy or autocracy or monarchy or whatever else, bad leaders make bad nations. Westerners are too confident their political system is the solution for all their woes. You just need to elect the next competent person, they say and things will magically improve. Western democracies have turned into popularity, beauty shows over wedge issues where the prettiest wins instead of the most competent. China on the other hand has a stringent selection system that picks leaders based on results and performance track records. Not saying 1 system is necessarily better or worse than the other here but the collective west should take a fresh, new, non-ideologically look at their system that is obviously not delivering results for their people today.

In the western countries, the smallest unit of a society is individual person. Any individual who reach 18 year old, should become independent and leave the family. In China, the smallest unit of the society is family. Family will support all members. They will not let a family member sleeping in streets. That will be considered big shame. If a family member loss job, s/he could stay at home with family for the time being. Parents will fully support kid's education, no matter how hard it might be as long as kids are pursuing higher education for better future. So, family is the basic unit of the Chinese society. Lots of Hong Kongers were buying. Shenzhen locals complained to local government and now to buy a property in Shenzhen you must have been living there for 5 years. If the police see a homeless person 8n China they will help them find somewhere. The Chinese police are known as problem solvers. I part live in China and also London. I don't get why Britain seem to have so much disdain for contemporary China. CCP governance closely resembles Singapore's PAP which rules a highly prosperous nation-state that happens to be former British colony. In many ways, they were readily responsible in installing "a dictator" : the late founding father of Singapore, Mr Lee Kuan Yew before its self-rule. I doubt those colonial overlords even had the mood to discuss democracy, humanright and all those silly nonsense in the 50s to 60s If anything, Britain should be proud that the China model (which is derived from Singaporean counterpart) can turn out to be this successful.😁☺

The UKs poor have fallen father behind that of other European countries, for example a UK pension has dropped to 15th below that of Bulgaria, Ireland, Bosnia, Cyprus, Ukraine, Spain and many others, the poor are getting poorer. The bedroom tax, pole tax, even have to pay money to watch own television. It must be very tough trying to make ends meet.

What needs to be appreciated is this. Europe with its polulation of 200 million had already achieved unprecedented economic transformation in the first phase of the industrial revolution between the 1780s and 1849, that is more than 200 years ago. China on the other hand with its staggering 900 million strong population was one of the poorest countries in the world as early as 1978. And it is in the short span of 46 years that the country has achieved the economic transformation to give its 1.9 billion people the social security that rivals that of the 746 million Europeans. That there is the real achievement of China.

Excellent presentation, Harvey. One small point... Per Ambassador Chas Freeman: The term 'multi-polar' suggests that each 'pole' is an end-point. By contrast, 'multi-nodal' represents continuity, where each 'node' represents a passing point - of tech- and knowledge-sharing, et al. Our world doesn't need poles (Irony: I live in Poland! 😂). We need nodes - power-sharing points within a larger network. For your consideration, Cheers.

Here is how I would distinguish a developed nation and a developing nation. In a developed nation, you can criticize it. Now, I am sure China is very good, maybe in many senses better than the UK, but no country is perfect. What is unsettling is that I see few criticism if any from all these westerners youtubers living in China. Some of the reporting are clearly one-sided and even distorting, like the lady on an airport escalator boasting she didn't have to walk, really? I appreciate that these reporting do help counter some of the stereotyping and unbalanced reports of western media, who to be honest are horrifically bad. However, it would be far more effective if these reporting themselves were more balanced. For example, Chinese youtubers have shown the homeless, albeit self inflicted, problems in China as well as horrific living conditions for many Chinese workers. Yet we got a dozen foreigners telling us homeless does not exist in China. I have no idea why that is the case, but that is not good for the channels and frankly is not good for China's image. Give us balanced reports and show that China is confident enough to tolerate criticism, then we can say China is a developed country. Having a homeless problem especially at the level in China is not the problem, hiding it is. I am looking forward to your videos on Chinese economy and I hope it would be balanced rather than just praises because we all know China has its problems. Nothing will think less of China just because it has some problems.

Something that 'seems' like it might be different in the UK is that the poor cannot go out to rural areas and with their own hard work, become self sufficient, growing their own food and building their own shelters (homes). All land is privately owned and trespassers will be prosecuted. There is nowhere you could go and fend for yourselves, You are not welcomed anywhere and anything you want to do to look after yourself would be illegal.

I am a Londoner and I love the UK. We have so much potential, I worked in HK for 5 years and travelled to China many times since 1995 so have seen the speed of China's transformation. The average UK citizen cannot comprehend Chinese cities being more advanced than London. They also believe Chinese citizens have no personal freedom. This perception comes from our media which works together to portray countries outside the West as poor, dangerous and undesirable. The reality is often the opposite. China is simply a safer and more harmonious society than the UK could ever hope to be, it's a cultural thing, we are more self-oriented not community-oriented. I work in finance and my vision of the future is that we in the West will suffer continued high inflation and low investment in our communities. China has not experienced the inflation we have suffered, this will continue.

@@Bawdale that is literally the fakest new I’ve ever heard. Coming from a Chinese, I was shocked when I got back to China from Canada for a vacation. I fully aware how much inflation is going on in Canada, but still. Our gov won’t tell you anything bad about our country I’ll assure you that. The unemployment rate that our new measures system is stated that in 2023 unemployment rate for young people (18-25) is on somewhere between 15%, but in reality, there are numerous videos showcasing that if measured by our old measurements system, the statistics should be at least 25%. Everything looks too good about China that it might seem fake to you is most likely to be actually fake about this country. You just don’t know it good enough since you are a ‘foreigner’.

Everyone knows that, we all know that, we just never have the chance to earn an accurate status to learn how much the exact inflation is. Real estate drops at its 8 years low countrywide. Every single small business I’ve ever heard of is claiming the business is hard to do more than ever. Big companies are facing bankruptcy one after another. Even HongKong economy is having its worst time ever. All the rich people are fleeing the country, especially rich from Hongkong.

What is the UK youth unemployment rate compared to China?
@wgemini4422
@wgemini4422 2 ай бұрын
Not comparable since they are calculated differently. China's youth unemployment dropped significantly last year only because they no longer count students as unemployed. The new number is about the same as UK, but I am still not sure they are comparable. Doesn't mean China doesn't have a problem, but it's not as easy as just comparing the numbers.

@@Andy-P Yes, however, that's not unusual. For example, Canada and the US calculate inflation differently, so the rates are not directly comparable. I always find unemployment statistics rather useless unless it includes labor participation rate as well. The NEET value is probably more useful, but I can't find it for China. Supposedly, a lot of Chinese youth started to take a "lying down" life style.
