I love book covers! Sometimes I get so tempted to get books I already own because I love the new covers so much!

The Puffin in Bloom books are gorgeous! I wish they'd done The Secret Garden, too, but I'm happy with my Penguin Threads edition.

Having worked at a bookstore, it always amazed me how creative graphic designers can get when designing book covers. Personally, I like a plain or simple cover, but a nice book spine since that's what I see most of the time.

I have all of the Puffin in Bloom books, and they are gorgeous! Alice in Wonderland, which was separate from the box set is AMAZING. Not only is the cover beautiful, but Anna Bond illustrated throughout the book. It's def one of my favorite editions (I collect Alice in Wonderland books). I agree that covers are important, at least to me they are lol. I use books all throughout my house to decorate with. One of my current fav covers is the one for The Silent Companions...I've got it setting off by itself in a vignette lol.

I judge a book by its cover all the time. I like pretty things. My genres are normally History, Historical Fiction and Romance so I love eye catching bright colours, pictures and stylish fonts. For Historical Fiction, the covers of women in the fashion of their time period is an automatic pull. For Classics I like the flowers, feathers etc. For Mysteries, Adventures and Crime I like The large font for titles.

You do have a lot of books with great covers I noticed. I love children's book covers especially :-)

I love pretty books but when it comes to the design I also consider the quality of the paper, if it has sewn binding, if it is bound in good paper or buckram, if the binding opens perfectly and easily (some hardcovers are really stiff). I love pretty covers but to me the construction of the book must be good too.

I love almost strictly illustrated or artsy book covers, like the penguin threads. I would consider patterns illustrated/artsy, so like the penguin cloth bounds. I also love beautiful fonts.

Yes, I definitely like pattern covers and typography covers. I don't care for stock photo covers.

Really interesting video! I like the third type of design you talk about, with the patterns and prints, but I'm not a fan of typography-based covers. Would be interesting to see you do a video about three types of designs you dislike.

This was fantastic! Also I definitely have several books on my shelves that were purchased in the specific editions as a result of seeing that edition on your channel (my Evelyn Waugh books and my copy of High Fidelity come to mind). I would say I definitely have the same or very similar cover taste. I love the VMC designer editions as well as all the beautiful Penguin Classics (my personal favorite from them is the Penguin English Library Collection 😄). For P.G. Wodehouse, I think I actually like the Arrow editions slightly more because while I do love the colors and the floppiness of the Norton editions (I also have that edition of Heavy Weather) I like that the Arrow ones are more compact and I find that I like more of the cover illustrations from that collection, so for those, I pick a Norton or an Arrow based on which cover art I like better and it varies by book. Another collection I have recently discovered that I love a lot is the newer Modern Library Collection, I have Count of Monte Cristo and Lady Chatterley's Lover in that edition and I love the colors and the simplicity of the cover art and how each has a little symbol on the spine that is different for each book 😀. Great video as always 😀

Do you, by any chance, follow the Folio Society illustration competitions each year? Illustrators are assigned a book being added to the collection (they all submit work for the same book) and put together portfolios that include a front and back cover design with spine, plus interior illustration for specific scenes. This year illustrators submitted work for the Sherlock Holmes fictions. I still remember when the contest handled Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber. My favorite portfolio of illustrations did not go on to win, but I still loved the winning work and bought the book.

Usually I gravitate toward linen covers on books. In particular I really like the knickerbocker children’s classics, and I don’t think they get much recognition. Shame, they are beautiful and are usually on eBay for very cheap.

I would be curious to hear more about or to understand the idea you mentioned about how you know by the covers if you'd like a book. I have not noticed any patterns in that for my own book reading experience, and I would love to learn what you have discovered. For example, why do you know you would generally love the books with the focus of the typography? What are reoccurring themes throught these different covers?

This reminds me of your attractive spines video. I was so glad I watched that because I found out about those Penguin Threads editions :D I really like simple book covers. I think it's because it's just "easier" on the eyes when I have to store/display my books. I wish that the popular penguin editions where colors indicated each genre were still around...because those were awesome!

I'm not trying to say I'm not drawn to covers, but because of of my limited to income and for the longest time not having an income, i don't think about the cover design. I just read the back and the price. Now, though, since joining booktube I have been thinking about it a lot more. Still not sure what draws me to a cover though.
